  • Shocker SB v Nebraska-Omaha

The Shockers host the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday for a DH with the first game starting at 3pm.

Omaha (apparently the preferred name in athletics) is 14-12 on the season. They were a preseason pick for second among the seven teams in The Summit League where they have a 4-2 record. They split two games with Drake and lost to Colorado State at the CSU tournament and were run-ruled by Nebraska.

Tonya Peterson (OPS of .961), Allie Mathewson (.881) and Campbell Ditto (a BA of .218, but six HRs and 18 BB for an OPS of .858) are Omaha's leading hitters. Kat Barlow (ERA of 1.59 and WHIP of 1.09 - impressive even with their schedule) and Jaylee Hinrichs (3.21 and 1.20) have the bulk of the innings for the Mavericks.

Brittany (OPS of 1.191), Liz (.976), Cacy (.965) and Mackenzie (.927) lead the Shocker hitting. Jenni's outing Sunday lowered her ERA to 3.87 with a WHIP of 1.84. Katie is at 4.12 and 1.58.

    Game 1: Shocks 7 - Omaha 5

The Shocks trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 6th and rallied to score 4 runs on 4 singles, a walk and a wild pitch to take a 7-5 lead. They did strand a runner at 3rd with only 1 out.

Jenny Brooks went the distance. She gave up 3 in the 1st including a lead off home run and 2 in the 4th. Overall she allowe 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, 3 walks and 1 hit batter while striking out 4, but importantly she pitched 3 scoreless innings to close out the game and give the Shocks a shot at the come from behind win.

    Shocks: 7R, 12H, 2E, 7LOB
    Omaha: 5R, 8H, 1E, 7LOB

I would like to see the Shocks get ahead and win from ahead in Game 2.

      Game 2: Shocks 4 - Omaha 1

Omaha jumped on top 1-0 on a 2-out RBI double in the top of the 3rd.

The Shocks promptly responded in the bottom of the 3rd getting a 2-out RBI single from Mackenzie Wright and a 2-out, 2 run double by Brittany Fortner to take a 3-1 lead.

After 4 innings there have been only 2 hits by each team. Each team has single and a double. The difference was a 1-out error in the 3rd by the Omaha 3B that made all 3 of the Shocks runs unearned.

Kelli Spring reached 1st with 2-outs in the 5th with Layne Greenlee scoring from 3rd as the Shocks score another unearned run to go 4-1 after 5 complete.

Katie Malone finishes off the Mavericks with a very solid complete game 2-hitter.

      Shocks: 4R, 3H, 0E, 3LOB
      Omaha: 1R, 3H, 2E, 3LOB

All runs in the game scored with 2-outs. The 2 errors by Omaha proved to be costly.

Cacy Williams did not play in either game of the DH today. I have no info on that. Hopefully, it is not continued disciplinary issues.

Neither did Liz. I suspect a continuation of the initial punishment, but not a new infraction.
