  • Lady Shockers and the Preseason WNIT

It seems time to move the game comments to "game threads."

The game with IPFW this Friday is the first round of the Women's Preseason NIT with subsequent games TBD, the tournament being a three-game-guarantee format.

Loyola is the only other school from the Valley participating. There are sixteen teams in the tournament with Louisville, LSU and Oklahoma being the "name" schools.

Here is the game write-up from the Mastodons' site. Knowing you would want to know, the story behind the nickname follows.

"Mastodons, an elephant-like beast (only larger) were indigenous to the area now known as the southern Great Lakes region over 10,000 years ago. While digging on his property in 1968, an Angola, IN farmer named Orcie Roustsong uncovered a very large bone. He knew it was too large to belong to a horse or cow, so he called Jack Sunderman of the IPFW geosciences department. Roustsong's farm became an archaeological dig site, which unearthed about two-thirds of a mastodon's skeletal remains and the skull of a baby mastodon. Most of those remains are still on display at IPFW.

In 1970, the IPFW student newspaper "The Communicator" began a drive for the student body to pick a mascot. Choices included Boiler-Hoosiers (a combination of Purdue's and Indiana's nicknames, see Nos. 43 and 18 herein), Warhawks, Marauders, Hobbits and Frontiersmen. Steve Pettyjohn, IPFW student body president (1968-69), penned a letter to the editor promoting the Mastodon. "Let's have the courage to be a little different," he wrote.

During the following academic year, the school Geology Club convinced Mark Souder, then student body president and current U.S. congressman from Indiana, to support the Mastodon. Souder appointed a committee which voted in favor of the prehistoric beast, a distant cousin of our present-day elephant.

That's one of the best mascot origination stories in all of college sports."

I see IPFW has the reigning Summit League POY.

#11 Amanda Hyde (a 5-10 Sr. G/F) became the first IPFW women's basketball player to earn Summit League Player of the Year honors last season. The last Mastodon to earn Player of the Year accolades was Lindy Jones who earned the award in the Great Lakes Valley Conference during the 1995-96 season.

Hyde led the Summit League in scoring by averaging 18.7 points per game. She reached a double figure scoring total in 25 of IPFW's 28 regular season games which included scoring 20 or more points 12 times.
That sets up an interesting match up with the Shocks Alex Harden.

IPFW has a 6-4 So. Center and a 6-2 So. Forward on their roster but they each only played about 4 minutes a game last year.

Last year the Dons were 13-17 overall and 8-8 in the Summit League.

A good opening game for this young Shocker team. A game that they can win, but one they could also lose if they don't play well.

An email was sent to the season ticket holders, verifying that this is the School House Rocks with the Shocks game and restricting us to two particular sections.

So, yes, earplugs are in order.

Now that you mention it I do remember that e-mail. Earplugs only needed if you don't care for the sound of fingernails scraping on a blackboard. In any case, I will not be able to attend this game so we need some good reports for those of you who do attend.

Shocks dominate the 1st half take a 37-13 lead into the locker room behind Michelle Price (14 points) and Alex Harden (11 points).

            :good:

We look good. I think we go nine deep. Probably playing Oklahoma Sunday, will be a huge test. We need to be soft on D to start the game so we don't get quick cheap fouls like Kelsey and then get more aggressive as the game goes on; refs usually let up on their touch fouls.

Looks like Jody played everyone on the roster except Kayla White. Perhaps a redshirt year is in the works for Kayla.

Alex Harden with 15 points on 6-9 shooting plus 2-2 FT's, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 0 turnovers, 1 block and 1 steal. Nice!

At Oklahoma Sunday 2:00 p.m. They have a 6-6 senior in the middle. We need Kelsey and Michelle to stay out of foul trouble. I liked how we moved the ball. Last year, we'd stand and dribble. This year, good ball movement and cuts. I like this team.

Seems like I read somewhere that Jody had made some changes to the offensive scheme she is running this year.

Hmm. It looked very similar if not the same. (@oldtimewomen's hoopcoach would have a better idea than I.) And perhaps those changes were not unveiled today. Running a set play to get Alie a three-point try was the only special play I noticed, but other than that, it looked pretty standard. But no one looked lost on offense.

Michelle was a beast. If her mid-range game comes together, she will be nigh impossible to guard.

Jamillah played well on both ends, but she needs to work on shot selection.

As expected, Alex is now the go-to when the offense breaks down.

The defense was as sticky as usual, but we are still adjusting to the new NCAA emphasis on eliminating the physicality of the defense - twenty-nine!! fouls on us.

I wasn't sure so I didn't say anything but if you have DirecTv OU v WSU is on 679. Billy Tubbs is on the color. Says we're a great team out of "the Mazzurah Vallah Conference".

Nobody teases their hair like OU head coach Sheri Coles.

Playing aggressive but in a world of trouble early.
