According to the texting update, WSU's Meagan Williams wins the javelin and the Shocks nearly sweep the event, finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th.

I know the Shocks were looking for a big number from the javelin. According to the form charts a really good night for the Shocks would have been 24 points. Looks like the Ladies picked up 31 points this afternoon. I wonder what the record team points from one event is?

Looks like the ladies closed the gap again in the pole vault. Pretty much a super day for the men and women.

The extra points in the javelin came out of UNI's hide as Indiana State wasn't really expected to score in the event at all. Still nice to pick up some excess above form points.

Yeah, the 6.5 points the Shocks collected was right at what was expected but Indiana State could have expected 19-20 points from this event and only scored 7.5 points.

Between Emily Cook's PR in the hammer throw, the amazing javelin performance and the Sycamore underperformance in the pole vault it was as @WuDrWu: points out a great Day 1 for the Lady Shocks.

A strong finish to the heptathlon tomorrow and the Lady Shocks will have positioned themselves to make a run at the Championship.

The Lady Shocks also picked up a few points on Indiana State in the 10k. Shocker Jr. Ebeissa Nyandwi charted in 5th set a new season best by 23 seconds and, in fact, did pick up the 4 points for finishing 5th.

However, Indiana State's Nicole Lucas had the 4th best time coming in but was only able to finish in 7th to drop 3 points vs the form charts.

Edit: UNI's Paige Knodle, who is leading after the 4 first day events by 52 points over Shocker Nikki Larch-Miller, is probably the heavy favorite to win at this point. She has the best Heptathlon score in the Valley this year and the first 2 events tomorrow are the Long Jump and Javelin which are both very good events for Knodle. In fact, she very well will win the open javelin as she has the best throw in the Valley this year. She probably deserve a championship after chasing the Shocks Tanya Friesen the last two years.
Short of an injury, Paige is going to win the Hept. She's stronger than Nikki in all 3 remaining events. What to look for at this point is if Nikki can qualify for nationals. 5450 is probably the low end of points needed to qualify. 2342 is what she needs to get there. Having a hard time getting to that number.

5.87 in the long jump, 41.50 in the javelin and a 2:19 800 would get her there, but all would be bests.

5.48, 40.00 and 2:23 are probably more likely. That would be 2144 and just shy of 5300, a heck of a score but probably shy of what is needed for nationals. But what do I know? Go get 'em Nikki!

I don't know where @1972Shocker: gets the form stats (I wish I did) but I think WSU closes the gap more in the womens 200. Nikki qualified for the final and while Katie Wise from Indiana State is all but a lock to win (as expected) Demetra Cambell from ISU did not qualify which probably costs the Trees some form points. That could be another 8 point turn around which would put the women's race in a projected virtual dead heat.

Also, Samantha Shukla qualified for the 1500 which might not have been expected form. ISU wasn't expected to score and they won't but any points for WSU would be welcomed.

It appears in one day the Shocks have completely closed the projected gap on Indiana State. This meet may very well come down to the 4X400 relay, a race the Trees have excelled in of late.

Doc, this a the site I linked to through the goShockers.com Stats link at the top of the Track & Field home page.

Go to the Stats link on the Track & Field Home page goShockers.com. If you do you will need to select the Sport (2014 Division I Outdoor), Gender (You can do Men and Women together or separately) and how deep you want to go up to Top 100. I am using Top 10.

Indiana State's Katie Wise is the class of the Valley in both the 100M and 200M dashes and is the strong favorite to win those events. Indiana States Demetra Camble had the 5th fastest time coming in and did not qualify. Nikki was not in the Top 10 coming in nor was any other Shocker so any points Nikki picks up is a plus and INS was probably counting on Camble for 4 or 5 points as you pointed out.

Samantha had the 9th best time coming in to the meet in the 1,500 so it is not surprising she qualified. Her time was about 1.6 seconds slowere than her best and the fastest qualifying time was 9 seconds slower than the best Valley time coming in so as is generally the case in the distance races qualifying times aren't always telling. While Nikki is guaranteed at least 1 point in the 200M race because only 8 qualify for the finals Samantha is 1 of 12 runners in the 1,500M final so is not guaranteed to score.

Now the Shocks just need to make sure they don't stumble and underperform expectations and give these nice Day 1 gains back.

As expected UNI's Paige Knodle won the heptathlon but the Shocks finished 2nd (Nikki Larch-Miller), 4th (Breanne Borman), 5th (Gavyn Yetter), 6th (Jenny Pinkston) and 7th (Jaclyn Abrahamian) for a total of 22 points.

Indiana State's Sr. Kelly Steffen finished 3rd so this may have actually been a 2-point plus for INS vs the form charts.

The bad news is Knodle is only a Junior so the Shockers will have to deal with her again next year. The good news is that this Shocker group is made of a sophomore, freshman, sophomore, freshman and a junior respectively.

Indiana State had a good Shot Put result going 1st and 3rd for 16 points. The form charts had them at 1st and 5th so they did pick up a couple of points there.

However, Emily Cook had the 9th best throw coming in and finished 7th to pick up 2 points and offset the pick up by INS. Emily is having a good weekend.

@1972Shocker:, what was the expectation for the long jump? Early returns have Nikki Larch-Miller finishing 7th for the Shocks.

Indiana State had the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best jumps. The finished 2nd, 5th and 6th (and 9th). So while a good result for the Sycamores it may not have been quite what they were hoping for.

The Shocks had the 8th, 9th and 10th (Nikki) best jumps. So with Nikki picking up 2 points for her 7th place finish is not a bad result for the Lady Shocks.

100 hurdle qualifying over with no real surprises. Shocks get 2 to the finals and ISU has the fastest time, as expected. What may be a surprise was that Nikki's twin sister Taylor makes the final. The Larch-Miller sisters times were 13.93 and 13.94.
