Tanya finishes at a very good 5-10 and Makeba Alcide of Arkansas (who may be the favorite to win the heptathlon, not sure about that) goes 5-11.75 in the high jump.

Tanya jumps from 14th to 4th with that performance.

The shot put on tap next (not Tanya's strength) followed by the 200 to close out Day 1 of the heptathlon.

Tanya puts the shot 36-1.25, which is not bad for her (perhaps a season best) and sits in 6th place after 3 events.

Tanya with a nice 24.45 in the 200M which I think is a new PR. Finished 2nd in her heat.

Tanya is in 7th place at the end of Day 1 with the Long Jump, Javelin and 800M run tomorrow.

Tanya needs to uncork a 20 footer in the Long Jump tomorrow to get her day off to a good start.

        Go Tanya! Go Shocks!

Nice article on Aliphine by Paul Suellentrop in today's Eagle:

Aliphine is scheduled to run her final race as a Shocker this evening as she runs the 5K at the NCAA Championships at around 8:15pm Wichita time.

I'm not expecting Aliphine to win. The 10K was perhaps her best shot. But I am expecting Aliphine to collect her 13 career All-America performance as a Shocker.

Good Luck, Aliphine. It's been fun following your Shocker career.

Also today Tanya Friesen finishes her career as she finishes off the final Heptathlon as a Shocker. I think they get started around 2:30pm Wichita time with the Long Jump, followed by Javelin and finishing with the 800M run at around 6:50pm.

Gool Luck to Tanya as well. Watching her develop over her 4-years as a Shocker has been fun as well. One of my all-time favorite Shocker female athletes. Always great to see the local kid (Tanya is from Buhler) do well and to get rewarded for all their hard work.

Tanya starts her day with a solid jump of 19-9. With that in the books she can really attack her final two jumps.

Tanya could not improve on her 1st jump and finishes 8th in the long jump.

Overall Tanya moves into 6th place with the Javelin and 800M remaining.

5th through 8th places very close.

Tanya is in Flight 2 of the javelin which would seem to indicate she is ranked in the bottom half of the throwers. She is an OK, but not a great 800M runner. She will probably need to near PR's to hang in the Top 8.

Update: Perhaps the flights are not seeded. The 1st round of throws in Flight 1 have not been overly impressive with the best being 120-9

This is not a totally unpleasant event to observe.

Tanya's group starts at 4:45 our time, and she's 3rd in order of 12.

Guys, if you haven't watched Tanya compete, I suggest this is a good starting point.

Tanya goes 137-2 which is a solid effort for her and 6th best in the competition. KU's Lindsey Vollmer cranks a 150+ foot throw on her final attempt.

A lot of the better javelin throwers seemed to be athletes holding lower positions overal which should help Tanya.

Tanya moves up to 4th place overall with the 800M run remaining.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be able to follow her in that final event.

                        It's scheduled for 6:50pm.

Less than 100 points separates 3rd through 7th place.

Tanya, you a about 2:25 worth of pain to endure in your Shocker career. May as well make them count big time.

                        Go git 'em, girl. :encouragement:

The KU gal, Vollmer, did really put one out there on that last throw! Tanya at least made some hay with her second attempt.

In the 800m run, whch I believe is all 24 heptathletes running in one heat Tanya needs to find Vanessa Jules of Marshall, Lucie Ondraschkova of Georgia and Dorcas Akinniyi of Wisconsin who are in 5th, 7th and 8th respectively and try to hang with them. They all seem to run around the same time in the 800m.

Tanya could try to hang with Keia Pinnick of Arizona State who is in 6th but that would probably require Tanya to run an all-time best.

She could also try to keep pace with Paige Knodle of UNI who is well back in 21st place but who is a very good 800m runner. Maybe Paige would like to help out her fellow Valley competitor.

If Tonya can manage a low 220s (222 or 223) I think she can hang on for no worse than 7th based on other expected times. If she could catch a flyer and set another PR as she's done in almost every other event the past 2 meets, I could see her as high as 5th. Keeping 4th is going to take a special, special effort for her.

Sounds like a good plan, Doc.
