  • MVC Women's Golf Championship

The 1st round of the MVC Women's Golf Championship was played today at The Club Porto Cima (Sunrise Beach, MO).

At this point it would appear that the golf course is winning. Not sure what the conditions were today on the golf course. We certainly had a windy day in Doo-Dah!

The Lady Shocks, who were picked to finsihed 5th, lead the way at 37-over but as you can see from the scoreboard there is not that many shots separating the top 6 or 7 teams especially on a course where it is apparently pretty easy to post big numbers.

Hannah Martin finished birdie-birdie-birdie to lead the Shocks with a 6-over 78 which is a tie for 3rd individually.

Unfortunately, the Shocker have been without Senior Gretchen Huhnerkoch for most of this year. I'm not sure what the store is on Gretchen. I am assuming some kind of injury but her absence is a huge hit for the Shocks.

It will be interesting to see if the Shocks can hold it together for two more rounds. Looks to me like you need try to avoid the double and triple bogies and make as many pars as you can as a team.

I wonder what happened to change the results I saw?

Not sure Doc. I initially was typing my post to show Bradley leading the Shocks by 1 stroke. I checked the scores again right before hitting the post button and the "final" scores had apparently changed.

Ah, I checked the score and Bradley Freshman Jenna Roadley was DQ'd following the round. No idea why yet. Jenna is their #5 so it's not a huge loss, but she was better than their #4 today, explaining why her DQ cost them 5 shots or so.

I have no idea if the DQ is just for today, or if she's out for the tourney. If she's out, the Braves, picked 3rd, are likely done.

According to the BradleyBraves.com webside Roadley was only DQ'd for today and will be back in the lineup on Monday. It did not say what the DQ was for.

Signing an incorrect score card would be my first guess.

Considering it seemed to be something that was determined after the completion of play that is a very good guess.

It's very early, but the Shocks have started well in round 2 this morning. Their lead is up to 4 with the last couple of groups just getting on the course in the last half hour or so. The girls seem to be playing well right now. If Hannah Martin can stay close to the top of the leaderboard, I think they've got a great shot at winning.

Shocks hanging tough, still up by 1 over Bradley. Scoring is very fluid when you count the top 4 of 5 on your team. Bradley is being paced by their #4 Christie Lin who shot an 86 yesterday, but is -1 through 6 today. Lin could mix in a couple snowmen to finish the front side if she wanted to really help out the Shocks today.

Yeah, Senior Hannah Martin who lead the Shocks yesterday has run into trouble early going bogey, double-bogey, triple-bogey and bogey on holes 3 thru 6. OTOH, Freshman Bryce Schroeder who was 13-over yestereday is even through 6 holes and Freshman Megan Schuetz who was 14-over yesteray is 2-over after 6 holes. So Hannah's score at this point is not in the mix. Long-way to go though. Just need to avoid big numbers.

Chances of the 3rd round being played tomorrow not looking very good due to the weather. I assume they will just push that back to Wednesday if they can't play tomorrow.

Shocker Senior Sarah Gilbert is an interesting story. She went to high school at JPO Papillion Lavista (so I assume her and Chelsey Feekin know each other). She started her career at the University of Sious Falls (SD) and split her time between the track and golf teams. After two years she transferrred to Wichita State for track.

Last year she competed for the Shocker track team and was All-MVC in the javelin, high jump and pentathlon.

This year she decided to switch back to golf and has been a nice addition to the team.

Doesn't help that Christie Lin is now 4 under par. Shocks trail Bradley by 2 strokes now.

She's the story right now for Bradley. 5 birdies on the front nine.

Looks like a quadruple-bogey by BU's Lemek sends WSU back into the lead by 3.

Thanks, I thought her name sounded familiar and not because of Rosanne.

Shocks are back in the lead by 3. Bryce makes the turn even for the day with 1 birdie and 1 bogey. Yesterday she had 2 birdies, 2 doubles, 3 bogies and a triple on the front. That's a heck of a comeback so far for her.
