Some really nice performances by the Ladies at Iowa State and at Air Force this past weekend:
AMES, Iowa- Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton shattered her own Missouri Valley Conference record in the indoor 5,000m run and posted the fifth fastest time in NCAA history at the Iowa State Classic.
Shocker All-American Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton shattered her own Missouri Valley Conference record in the indoor 5,000m run and posted the fifth fastest time in NCAA history at the Iowa State Classic. With a time of 15:25.47, Tuliamuk-Bolton eclipsed her previous indoor record by over ten seconds. Her effort in the race earned her second place at the meet, behind defending national champion, Betsy Saina. Tuliamuk- Bolton now owns the second best time nationally with the top 16 runners qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. With a spot at the national meet likely clinched, Tuliamuk-Bolton will turn her attention to the MVC Indoor Championships where she looks to repeat as MVC Champion in the 3,000m and 5,000m.
At the Air Force Team Challenge J'Lynn Ledesma achieved her goal of a 6-0 jump. She set a new personal best by clearing the bar at 6-0 ½ in the high jump which also set a new MVC record for the indoor HJ. Ledesma placed first in the event at the Air Force Team Challenge and now ranks 10th in the nation and 1st in the Valley this year as she builds toward defending her 2012 Valley indoor HJ championship.
Shamoya Pruitt set a new PR in the 60m dash, finishing second. Pruitt's 7.57 sprint ranks her third in the Valley.
Shanice Andrews set a new personal record in the 60m hurdles. Her 8.54 performance earned her second place. Andrews has improved her PR in consecutive meets.
After setting the Shocker pentathlon record last week, Tanya Friesen established a new indoor long jump best with 19-4 leap. She took second place at the meet.
Courtney Reinke followed up her win in the triple jump at the Varsity Apartments Invitational, by setting a new indoor best in the event. She improved her previous record by three inches and now ranks second in the MVC in the triple jump.
Kiara Giles and Kristina Taylor swept the top two spots in the women's 400m. The Shocker women also finished first and second in the 4x400m relay.
Nice work Ladies. Sounds like they are progressing nicely as the build towards the MVC Indoor Championships at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on February 23rd and 24th.
Hopeuflly, @goshox74: will stop by before then to give us a preview of this year's indoor championship and the Shockers chances.

I don't have a lot of time but I can give a few tidbits ...
Obviously Aliphine Tuliamuk's performance Saturday hasn't pierced most people's consciousness around here seeing as though it was relegated to sports in brief in Sunday's Wichita Eagle. It was the FIFTH FASTEST TIME IN NCAA HISTORY! Just to make it clear there have only been 4 women in the history of college track and field to run an indoor 5k faster. Unfortunately one was in that race and beat Aliphine (Betsy Saina) and is the defending NCAA champion. Anyways, I hope the media soon realizes that this the best female athlete in WSU history (and possibly the best male or female ever) and gives her some props. Her days on our campus are numbered and we will never see someone like her again.
For the MVC, even though the Shocks are ranked #20 in the NCAA you might have noticed Indiana State is #18. Indiana St will probably be the favorites going into the MVC Champs with WSU and Illinois St a close 2-3.
On the men's side Indiana St (ranked #20) will again be the favorite with WSU a strong 2nd choice. SIU and UNI will probably be ranked 3-4 in the pre-meet poll. I'll try to give more info next week when I have time.
Another couple of great teams put together by Coach Rainbolt and his staff. The MVC is a great T&F conference, this year it is probably equal to the Big 12 in quality and depth.

For event-by-event stats go here: http://www.tfrrs.org/lists/982.html
This will give you anything you need to know about the MVC (and every other conference for that matter).

For those of you who want to follow the track and field teams more closely, they film a weekly show on Wednesday nights live on Ustream. They also archive all the shows. It is about 30-40 minutes in length and has highlights as well as interviews with coaches and athletes. It's not as professional as Shocker Sports Report but I'm sure it's the only show of it's kind about track and field. Very entertaining!
Next week will be the MVC Indoor Championships preview show.
Here is the link to the track team's Ustream channel that has all the shows and archives of the home track meets: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wichita-state-track-field

BTW, kudos to Shocker freshman Jenny Pinkston for her strong 2nd place finish to Tanya in the Pentathlon. Looks like we have Tanya''s heir apparent in the fold and you have to be optimistic about what Jenny can do for the Lady Shocks over her career.
Shocks also had two other freshman Sierra Hays and Gavyn Yetter finish 8th and 9th ans Coach 'Bolt continues to show his affinity for recruiting and developing multi-event athletes, a strategy that has served him well.
Looks like Sierra and Gavyn need to figure out the high jump and long jump.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 24, 2013, 12:37 PM.

Courtney Reinke picks up a 2nd place finish in the triple jump.
Illinois State racks up 21 points in the mile run finishing 1-3-4. Aliphine finshes 2nd .004 seconds behind Rachael Brewer. Shocker Jr Samantha Shukla finished 6th as the Shocks score 11 points.
After 8 events score the Shockers lead with 80 points and Illinois State sits in 2nd with 66 points.
Natalie Morerod finishes 5th in the 400M dash which was won by Illinois State's Sade Sealy.
After 9 events: WSU - 85, ILS 76
Senior Shamoya Pruitt finishes 3rd in the 60M dash.
After 10 events: WSU 91 - ILS 79
Shocker So Shanice Andrews picks up 3rd place points in the 60 hurdles and pentathlon champ Tanya Friesen adds 7th place points to the mix.
After 11 events: WSU 99, ILS 79, INS 78
Samantha Shukla finishes in 7th in the 800M run as the scores tighten up again.
After 12 events: WSU 101, INS 91, ILS 87
Shamoya Pruitt finishes 8th in the 200M dash which was scored as event 14. Not sure what event 13 was. In any case the Lady Shocks have fallen out of the lead.
After 14 events: INS 120, WSU 114, ILS 98
Aliphine wins the 5K race and the Shocks get a big 2nd place finish from Sophomore Kaitlyn McLeod. Aliphine ran pretty slow for her so I hope she is OK. Possible that she hung back to try and carry Kaitlyn to a good finish. Maye goshox74 will have some insight on that. I think Katilyn ran about 32 seconds below her previous season best time.
BIG CORRECTION: Kaitlyn finished 7th.
After 15 events: WSU 126, INS 124, ILS 112 (As Corrected) - Can the Shocks hang on.
Shocker Jr J'Lynn Ledesma wins the high jump as the only jumper to clear 6'. Tanya Friesen nabs 4th and Freshman Ashley Peterson picks up 1 point for her 8th place finish.
After 16 events: WSU 142, INS 132, ILS 112 - One more event to go. It appears the event I missed was the pole vault. I think it has been scored but the results aren't availalbe on the live results site.
Final event is the 4x400 relay.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 24, 2013, 05:35 PM.

Shocks in 4th at the 1st exchange.
A fading 5th at the 2nd.
A tightening 5th at the 3rd.
And finish a closing but far back 4th. ISUR won the race, so there's zero chance ISUB closed enough to win.
Yet another title for Bolt and the flagship program in the Valley.

Thanks Doc. I attempted to post updates to my ongoing post but for some reason they wouldn't post.
In any case, congratulations ladies and to Coach 'Bolt and staff on another Valley title. :applouse:
Final scores according to the lives stats:
1. WSU 147
2. INS 138
3. ILS 122
4. MSU 88
5. SIU 77
6. UNI 41
7. BU 25
8. DU 24
More or less in line with pre-meet expectations except MSU and SIU are flip-flopped from expected finishes as are BU and DU.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 24, 2013, 05:54 PM.
