Go Shockers - RH: Sophomore Works Her Way Into Single Lineup

Colin Foster keeps an Excel spreadsheet on his laptop with tennis players categorized by country and age. He may see several at a tournament, many of whom aren't recruiting eligible, and keeps notes.

He checks the list country by country and, when an athlete reaches NCAA permissible recruiting age, contacts them through social media. As in the case of Theodora Chantava, he might write them years after watching them.

"He saw me, and then three years later I get a message on my phone," said Chantava, a sophomore from Grevena, Greece. "I didn't expect it. I was like 'Is this true?" I talked with him. I trusted him from the moment I talked to him."

Foster first watched in the summer of 2019 in a tournament in Greece and noted her talents. He returned in 2022 to evaluate her again and dispel Chantava's doubts about how the system worked in American college tennis.

"Once I made that trip, she knew 'Oh, this must be a real thing," Foster said. "Under the radar recruit. Small town. She was like 'Wait, you're going to pay for everything?" Colin Foster
That spreadsheet is paying off for Wichita State women's tennis, which enters the week 10-7 and ranked No. 63 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Chantava, after finishing her freshman year at No. 5 in the lineup, is playing No. 3 in recent matches and is 10-1 in singles dual matches this spring.

The Shockers (10-7) play Tulsa (1 p.m.) and Kansas City (5 p.m.) at Coleman Tennis Complex today (Monday).

WSU's appearance in the national ranking is its first since 2022 and its highest (at No. 55 on March 19) since 2019. Chantava, who started the spring out of the singles lineup, is an example of how the Shockers are improving.

"She really kind of took that personally and used it as even more motivation," Foster said.

Chantava said she expected to start the spring in the lineup. While disappointed, she trusted Foster's judgment and took his suggestions to improve her mindset and work through adversity.

"I took it personally and I worked harder," she said. "I tried to be more positive and put the work in, physically, on the court."

Chantava, 6-foot-1, is more agile and stronger after conditioning sessions with Alex Dee, assistant director of sports performance.
    Theodora Chantava

"She knows that stuff pays off," Foster said. "You can see it in longer matches or even longer points. She doesn't bail out as quickly. She's willing to stay in the rally when she needs to and play the extra couple shots."

Chantava credits Shocker coaches with helping build a plan entering a match. That work built confidence and maturity.

"I was sort of playing blind with my talent – whatever worked," she said. "We've really developed strategic tactics."
Chantava is majoring in sport management with the goal of coaching after playing professionally. For most athletes in Europe, continuing their education while playing a sport isn't an option, which is why the American system of college sports is attractive.

She isn't sure where she would be without Foster's spreadsheet.

"It's crazy," she said. "It's so interesting and incredible how it worked. I was looking for a degree, and I knew in Greece it would be hard to get. When he explained all the experiences here, it was easy to say 'Yes.'"

That "yes" was three years in the making for Foster and Chantava.

When I read articles like this, I feel much better about the money (SASO) I donate annually to the athletic department... it gives me the 'warm and fuzzies', and at my age, I need all of them I can get.

No. 63 Shockers Fall to Tulsa, Dominate UMKC to Split Doubleheader

The 63rd ranked Wichita State women's tennis team split their doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The Shockers fell to Tulsa 4-1 and bounced back to sweep UMKC, 4-0 later in the day.

The loss to Tulsa for the Shockers (11-8) was their fourth in a row, and Tulsa (9-11) snapped their four-match losing streak, but the win over Kansas City (5-13) would get the Shockers back in the win column.

"The Tulsa match was another really good college tennis match," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "We knew it would be a tough match and it was."

"Against Tulsa, we had some opportunities to get some more points on the board and maybe pull out the win, but we just play well enough in the crucial moments," said Foster "Tulsa was able to battle really well under pressure."

In the Shockers second match against the UMKC Roos, the Shockers left no doubt, sweeping the UMKC 4-0 in under two hours of match time.

"It was great to bounce back with a good and complete performance against UMKC," said Foster. "We're still getting stronger, more confident, and the most important thing for us now is just staying resilient."

Tulsa has a solid tennis program but this loss to them will not doubt drop the Shocks in the rankings and the win over UMKC won't do anything for them.

No. 68 Shockers Swept by No. 54 Kansas

The 68th ranked Wichita State women's tennis team fell on the road to the 54th ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Friday afternoon at Jayhawk Tennis Center, 4-0.

The loss for the Shockers (11-8) is their fifth in their last six matches and Kansas (9-12) wins their third in a row.

The Jayhawks took doubles swiftly from the Shockers with wins at doubles courts one and three to give Kansas the early lead.

Singles was over very quickly after the Jayhawks took home swift wins at the #2. #3 and #4 singles including Theodora Chantava suffered her first defeat in over two months with a 6-1, 6-2 loss at court three. The curse of the RH background report on Theodora.

The remaining 3 abandoned single matches were much more competitive although of no consequence in the outcome of the match.

No. 68 Shockers Triumph Over LA Tech on Senior Day

Wichita State women's tennis team (12-9) picked up a 4-2 win on senior day over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

"We've had some struggles results wise recently," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "The girls really embraced the challenge of the match today and found a way to win."

Doubles was a wire-to-wire battle that the Shocker duos would ultimately pull out. Natsumi Kurahashi and Xin Tong Wang won with ease at court two 6-0 to open doubles, but the Bulldogs battled back to win 6-4 at court three leaving Kristina Kudryavtseva and Jessica Anzo to decide doubles at court one with the Shocks pulling out a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win.

"The match at number one doubles was big," said Foster. "It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to win."

In singles, Anne Knuettel fell first, losing 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1.

Chantava would win a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Shockers the lead back.

Redshirt senior Kurahashi would finish off her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 at court two to earn her second win of the day.

Wang would fall next in a tight battle at the No. 1 singles court, losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to cut the Bulldog deficit down to one, keeping the door open for LA Tech comeback.

Kudryavtseva would slam the door on the Bulldog comeback with a three-set triumph at court five, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Shockers, 4-2.

"In singles, it started to get really windy out here and LA Tech really made us work for everything," said Foster. "I thought we showed the ability to dig deep and we found a way to win today."

The Shockers did struggle a bit down the stretch although against a decent schedule. The finished the regular season losing 5 of the final 7 matches which included 3 losses to ranked opponents plus losses to fellow AAC members UAB and Tulsa.

Two seniors, Jessica Anzo and Natsumi Kurahashi played their final home matches as Shockers:

Shockers Get Revenge, Sweep Rival Tulsa to Advance in AAC Tournament

The 74th ranked and 7th-seeded Wichita State women's tennis team swept the 10th-seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday evening at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

The Shockers (13-9) pick up their first win at the AAC Championship since 2019 and Tulsa (11-12) sees their three-match winning streak come to an end. The win for the Shockers also breaks a six-match long losing streak to Tulsa and avenges the Shockers' 4-1 loss at home to the Golden Hurricane ten days ago.

After Tulsa and the Shocks split the #2 and #3 doubles by identical 6-3 scores the Shocks #1 doubles team, after jumping out to a 5-0 lead, ended up having to go to a tiebreaker after Tulsa roared back to force a 6-6 tie. The Shocks prevailed 7-4 in the tiebreaker to win the doubles point.

Straight set wins at #3 singles (6-2, 6-3), #6 singles (6-4, 6-1), and #1 singles (6-4, 6-2) clinched the match for the Shocks as they advance to play 43rd ranked and 2nd-seeded Charlotte on Frday at 3:00 pm.

"We just kept our nose to the grindstone and played focused tennis today," said Shocker Head Coach ColinFoster. "We played at a pretty good level on every court."

The Shocks will need that and more to have a shot at the upset today. The Shocks were swept by Charlotte 4-0 in Charlotte on March 17th. Not impossible, but would be a major upset.

7 Seed Wichita State vs 2 Seed Charlotte - AAC Quarterfinals

The Shocks are not just simply conceding to the higher rank 49ers.

The Shocks lost the #1 doubles 2-6 but Xin Tong Wang and Natsumi Kurahashi won the #2 doubles 6-2 followed by Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli wining the #3 doubles 6-4 to secure the all important doubles point if the Shocks are going to have any chance at an upset.

The Shocks need to find 3 wins in the singles to pull the big upset.

The Shocks won the first set at the #4 singles (Kristina Kurdryatseva 6-2), at the #5 singles (Giorgia 7-6 winning the tiebreaker 7-3), and at the #6 singles (Jesscia Anzo 7-5). Charlotte took the first sets at #1 (6-1), #2 (6-2), and #3 (6-3).

Charlotte wins the #2 singles over Natsumi 6-2, 6.1 to pull even in the match at 1-1.

The Shockers Kristina Kudryavtseva strikes back with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Shocks lead 2-1 and need to find 2 more wins.

After getting wiped out 1-6 in the first set at the #1 singles Shocker freshman XTW battles back to win the 2nd set 7-6 with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker. Gives herself a chance heading to a 3rd set.

Theodorable falls in #3 singles at 3-6, 4-6 as Charlotte forges back into a 2-2 tie.

XTW runs out of gas at #1 singles and falls 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6 and Charlotte moves back into the lead at 3-2 with tight matches in progress at #5 and #6 singles.

Jessica Anzo grinds out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win at #6 singles to pull the Shocks even at 3-3 with the result coming down to the #5 singles with freshman Giorgia Roselli carrying the Shockers' hopes. That match is in the 3rd set with Giorgia winning 7-6 (7-3) in the 1st set and dropping the 2nd set 4-6. A lot of pressure on a freshman. Giorgia jumps ahead 3-0 but it is now 4-4 and Charlotte has the momentum. Charlotte comes all the way back from 0-3 win the deciding set 6-4 to take the very hard fought 4-3 win over the Shocks.

Tough, tough loss for the Shocks as they finish off the season. Not a bad season for the Lady Shocks.

It is always a bit difficult to evaluate college tennis recruiting which is dominated by Foreign players.

Aubakirova has a career high ITF Junior ranking of Something to look forward to, or not - 2008-2009 and is currently ranked The Next Great American Band She has won a plethora of junior singles and doubles titles, including the ITF Junior 30K event in Astana, Kazakhstan in November of 2023, defeating all five of her opponents in straight sets to win the title.

The Shockers' Xin Tong Wang, who earned AAC All-conference Honors as a freshman this year, had a career high ranking of Volleyball Forum in the ITF Women's rankings, #255 in the ITF Junior rankings.

Other comps from Shocker players prior to college include Anne Kneutel who achieved an ITF Junior ranking of #322, Kristina Kudryavtseva who was Listed as high as 267th in the ITF junior rankings, Gioriga Roselli had a career high ranking of Spencer Collins - Eastfield C.C. on the ITF Women's Circuit and her Junior career was highlighted by a finals appearance in singles and doubles (doubles winner) at the ITF Junior event in Hasselt, Belgium.

Hopefully, Sati's talent will prove to be satisfying but only time will tell.

With 2 Shockers, Jennfier Anzo and Natusumi Kurshashi, completing their eligibility this year I assume Coach Foster will bring in one more player.
