In this same tournament Xin Tong, a 5-5 freshman, is playing doubles with 5-11 Safiya Carrington, a Massachusetts native, who played 4 seasons (including the covid year) at LSU and is a grad transfer at Oklahoma State this season.

Xin and Safiya have also advanced to the semi-finals in the doubles competition.

    https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournam...s-and-results/

It looks like 4 of the 15 teams in the doubles draw are seeded. Xin and Safiya are unseeded. The top seeded team, Mary Lewis, a powerfully built (think Serena Williams) former Michigan State player (2021), and Rhiann Newborn, a former Baylor player (2016) received a first round bye.

After winning their first round match 6-2, 6-3 Xin and Safiya upset the top seeded old ladies in the quarterfinals 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 to move into the semi-finals against the #3 seeded team of Raquel Gonzalez Villar of Spain and Ayumi Myamoto out of Japan who both play for Oklahoma State.

Xin and Safiya dropped their semifinals double matcch to the OSU pair 6-7 (1), 2-6.

Update: But a real nice showing for the Shocker freshman who just was certified for collegiate competition a few weeks ago. Looks like she might be qood one.

Go Shockers - Women's Tennis Releases 2024 Spring Schedule

The Wichita State Women's Tennis team has unveiled their spring schedule for the 2024 year. The Shockers open their season on January 11th at Oklahoma and play their first home match against Kansas State on January 27th. The Shockers will compete against seven different American Athletic Conference Schools this spring.

Head Coach Colin Foster is very excited to see the challenges that this schedule brings this year.

"We've got a very well-balanced schedule featuring a good mix of regional, conference, and national competition," said Foster. "We've made a lot of progress this fall, and I know this group is excited for the opportunities that are in front of us on the schedule."

The Shockers will face six teams (SMU, Kansas, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, Charlotte, Kentucky) who finished ranked inside last year's final Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-75 poll.

Coach Foster's group will also play six teams in the American this year, including three programs that are new to the American in North Texas, Charlotte, and UAB.

"The American does not play a regular season round robin schedule, but we get to see many of the top programs in the league, along with several Big 12 opponents," said Foster. "These matches will give us ranking opportunities as well as prepare us for the conference tournament."

The year, the Shockers will play seven home matches, nine true away matches, and four at neutral sites.

Home match locations will vary based on weather conditions on the day of the match. All matches will have live stats.

The 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship will be hosted by SMU and played at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex located in Dallas, Texas.

Not that literally anyone cares, but I am a little surprised that SMU isn't getting the Houston treatment for leaving the American.

        They should.

Not a surprising result. The Shocks were just overmatched in this one.but hopefully some lessons were learned.

Shockers Competitive But Fall to Kansas State 5-2

"The doubles point is always crucial in a match like this," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "We created some chances, but we lost a couple of close games here and there."

"I thought we responded and competed well in each of the three-set battles," said Foster. "The match really came down to just a couple of points here and there."

Shockers Bested on the Road by Kentucky

Wichita State women's tennis team dropped a road contest to the Kentucky Wildcats at Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, 2-5.

"It was a heck of an effort on the road against a good Kentucky team," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "It just wasn't our day to find enough wins, but as long as we trust that this match pushed us to get better, then it will."

The Wildcats (5-3) remain perfect at home this season, improving to 4-0 in Lexington, while the Shockers (3-3) are now 3-2 in road contests this year.

The Shocks picked up the doubles point with 6-2 wins at both #1 and #2 doubles but could only find 1 win, a tight 7-6, 7-5 win at #2 singles.

                          Women’s Tennis Withstands Green Wave

Wichita State women's tennis team took home a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Tulane Green Wave at the Wichita Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

The Shockers (4-3) collect their first home victory of the year, moving to 1-1 playing in Wichita. The Green Wave (4-2) drop to 1-2 in road contest this season.

Head Coach Colin Foster was proud of the fight his team showed today.

"It's a great team win," said Foster. "We were down a break across all three doubles courts, but we stayed calm and were able to flip two of them and ultimately that was the difference in the match."

It was an all-out war on the doubles courts with the crucial point being decided by just a couple games.

Xin Tong Wang was 4-0 overall this week going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.

"Xin Tong has showed she can play singles and doubles at a really high level," said Foster. "She can play any style required depending on the situation and opponent."

The Shockers defeated UT-Arlington in Arlington today 4-0 picking up the doubles point and winning the #1, #5 and #6 singles in straight sets each in relatively comfortable fashion. In the 3 unfinished matches the #2 singles looked to be heading to a 3rd set, #3 singles was 3 games into the 3rd set and the #4 singles was on the verge of going to UTA in straight sets.

The Shocks head over to the northeast part of the metroplex tomorrow to take on SMU which will no doubt provide a much tougher test for the Shocks.

As expected the Shockers ran into much more resistance against SMU as the Mustangs earned a 4-0 win with SMU also leading in the 3 unfinished singles matches.

However, the Shockers were competitive in most cases. The Shocks fall to 5-4 on the season.
