Go Shockers - Kansas State Champion Wheeler Added to Women's Tennis Staff

Wichita State head women's tennis coach Colin Foster announced the addition of Wichita native Max Wheeler to the coaching staff as an additional assistant coach on Thursday afternoon.

"I'm very excited to add Max to our staff," Foster said. "He is a super positive guy who brings a great energy to the team, and he is a very hard worker."

Wheeler returns to his hometown of Wichita after finishing his collegiate playing career at William Jewell College, an NCAA Division II institution in Liberty, Missouri.

As a William Jewell Cardinal, Wheeler was a two-time Academic All-Grand Lakes Valley Conference selection. In addition, he compiled a record of 30-41 in doubles play while at William Jewell. He was team captain of the men's tennis team in his final three seasons as a Cardinal.

Wheeler played high school tennis just down the road from Wichita State at Wichita Collegiate School, where he played for legendary tennis coach Dave Hawley. In 2018-19, Wheeler captured a 3A Kansas State Boy's Tennis Championship on his way to posting a spotless 29-0 doubles record in his senior season.

"I'm really looking forward to watching Max grow as a coach here with us." Foster said. "He has and will continue to add great value to our coaching staff."

Go Shockers - Shockers Slated to Compete in Central Regionals

The Wichita State women's tennis team has a full slate of action ahead of them this weekend, as they are set to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kansas from October 12-16.

The four-day event begins on Thursday at 9:00 AM central and will mark the start of the quest for the ITA Fall National Championships from November 2-5.
Head coach Colin Foster is looking forward to the competition this weekend.

"The Central Regionals are our biggest event of our fall schedule and it's going to bring us a lot of competition from the region," said Foster. "Our team hasn't gotten to compete much together all fall, so it will be good to finally play together at this event."

Six of the eight Shockers on the 2023-24 roster will be making the trip to Lawrence to compete in this event with five competing in singles and all six playing doubles matches.

"It'll be good to see the progress our girls have been making and a good opportunity to see what we've learned and what we still need to work on," said Foster. "Everyone needs more matches and reps and our girls have been so open to being coached and getting better."

Theodora Chantava, Natsumi Kurahashi, and Kristina Kudryavtseva have all claimed spots in the singles main draw, while Clara Whitaker and Giorgia Roselli will have to battle through two rounds of qualifying on Thursday to join the main draw.

The Shockers will also trot out doubles' pairings of Kurahashi/Jessica Anzo, Roselli/Kudryavtseva, and Whitaker/Chantava.

"We feel like we've gotten better all fall as a team and are looking forward to continuing to learn in Lawrence this week," said Foster.

Live streaming will be available for all games played at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, but some matches will be played offsite and won't have livestreaming available.

Women’s Tennis Takes Off for Tulsa to Finish the Fall

The Wichita State women's tennis team will finish the fall campaign at the Tulsa Invitational at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center from Nov. 3-5. The Shockers will compete in a series of organized doubles and singles matches against North Texas, Central Arkansas, and Tulsa over the course of the weekend.

Head coach Colin Foster is looking forward to the competition this weekend.

"The Tulsa Invite is a great event to conclude our fall competition," said Foster. "It's a great tournament that mimics the team duel match format of our regular season, so it helps give us the chance to get some of that experience in the fall."

This will be the first time in the fall season where the all of this year's Shockers will be competing in the same place at the same time.

True freshman Xin Tong Wang will get her first action as a Shocker in this tournament after competing unattached sporadically in other fall tournaments. Coach Foster is anxious to get his freshman from Hangzhuo, China some action with the team.

"I'm super excited to get Xin Tong in the lineup this week for the first time," said Foster. "I'm glad we were able to get her certified in time to compete this weekend for us."

"I'm eager to see everyone be able to get out and compete," said Foster. "We're going to have to compete hard this weekend to have success and everyone will be tested, but I'm confident we're going to see some positive results."

Women’s Tennis Finishes Fall with Success at Tulsa Invitational

Wichita State women's tennis ended their fall season with a series of wins at the Tulsa Invitational this weekend. The Shockers went 5-4 in doubles overall and a superb 13-6 in singles matches across the weekend.

The Shockers competed in doubles and singles matches throughout the weekend against North Texas, Central Arkansas, and host school Tulsa.

"We had a great weekend on the court and really competed well as a team," said Foster. "Results-wise, Kristina [Kudryavtseva], Xin Tong [Wang], Jessica [Anzo] all went undefeated in singles, and they were all just a point away from going undefeated in their doubles matchups as well.

"Xin Tong was able to make her Shocker debut and she played very well," said Foster. "She showed what we anticipated which is that she will be very capable of being at the top of our doubles and singles line up."

The Shockers began the Invitational by dropping a pair of incredibly close doubles matchups against Tulsa, before bouncing back to win all seven singles matchups against North Texas later in the day. The team continued their success on Saturday morning when they snatched two of three doubles matches from the Mean Green with the lone loss being incredibly close.

The Shockers then faced Central Arkansas in singles to end the day where they took four of six matchups from the Bears. Doubles on Sunday saw more success as the Shockers won two of three against Central Arkansas to finish with an overall 5-4 doubles record on the weekend.

Tulsa was the only team to come out on top in singles over the Shockers on the weekend, as the Golden Hurricane won four of six matches.

Update: Xin Tong lost her semi-final singles match to Gina Marie Dittman of Germany 7-5, 4-6, 0-6.

Looks like the 8 of the 32 players were seeded. Xin Tong was the 8th seed and Gina Marie was the 6th seed.
