Is it true that Sammie Shook won't be back next year? What happened to the pitcher from California?

Wow - they're actually holding open tryouts? Are they that desperate?

I think the staff did the same thing last year. I take this as a promotional effort, reminding people of the softball program, rather than actually expecting to find a starter roaming the campus.

Yes, they did do that last year as well. I don't think they found any hidden gems last year. They are pretty desperate for quality pitching but unlikely you will find that in open tryouts. You may occassionally find a position player that has fallen through the cracks or is a late bloomer that could fill a roster spot or possibly a speed merchant that you would use in bunting situations or strictly as a pinch runner (which are used more more in softball than baseball because of the re-entry rules), but I don't think they are trying to build a team this way. It probably won't help much, but it doesn't hurt much either. Coaches are just out a little time and effort. If you happen to stumble across a hidden gem once in awhile that can contribute a little as a walk-on then why not turnover as many stones as you can.

I think Bill does this at KU and actually selects a couple of practice players from the tryouts and they get to sit the bench during BB games.

If you do find someone, its more likely to be someone who quit playing just to go to school and misses it enough that they want to see how they do.

I've heard from reliable source that Tim did this a few years ago and actually found a player, but don't ask who it was.

Check other schools sites - common practice imo. Walk-ons can help as runners, defensive subs, etc...

Are you referring to Tim Walton? And, if so, was this at WSU or at Florida?

Katie McGeeney is my guess - but Hovpen said not to ask. And Katie was a stud.

                      • McGeeney was a walk on but she was not one that tried out. She was an invited walk on.

                        • In any case, Katie would definitely qualify as a Diamond in the rough. She polished up quite nicely.

Okay. I kind of remembered Katie as a walk-on, but I thought I would take a guess. You definitely could not get her out of the lineup once she got in.

Kennedy Long from Derby and Morgan Bohannon from Goddard have both committed to WSU.
