Go Shockers - Women's Golf Begins 2022-23 Season at Payne Stewart Memorial

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State women's golf officially opens the 2022-23 campaign at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo., Sept. 12-13.

Opening round play kicks off Monday, Sept. 12 with 36 holes and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. Play begins with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, while Tuesday's final round tees off at 8:30 a.m.

Wichita State joins the 14-team field at the Rivercut Golf Course and will be represented in Missouri with this lineup: Mackenzie Wilson, Megan Lucas, Mar Vidal, Brooklyn Benn and Sarah Lawson. Madison Slayton will also make the trip and compete as an individual.

The tournament marks the first collegiate competition for the two freshmen Wilson and Benn.

The Shockers tied for eighth at last year's Payne Stewart Memorial.
We get our first taste of what the women's golf team has this week. I'm not sure how we're expected to stack up against this field.

It is, at best, a mid-major field and also includes 3 D-II teams. These are the kind of tournaments the Shocks need to start winning if they are to have any hope of being competitive in the NCAA. However, I don't think they are quite there yet. With 2 of the 5 ladies in the Shocker lineup being freshman I am not expecting a much different result than the 8th place finish. But I am open to being surprised.

Hopefully the Shocks can hang in there for Round 2 this afternoon.

The Shocks are in 1st at 5-over par after the 1st round. Mackenzie Wilson, the freshman from Australia, led the way for the Shockers at 2-under par 70 and is tied for 1st on the individual leader board. Her only real blemish was a double bogey 5 on the par 3 17th. Sarah Lawson was 1-over, Mar Vidal was 2-over and Megan Lucas was 4-over. Freshman Brooklyn Benn. from Edmond Oklahoma, did struggle in her first collegiate round had the throw away score at 9-over.

Madison Slayton, playing as an individual, was 6-over par.

UTEP is 2 shots back and host Missouri State, Creighton and Arkansas State are all 3 shots behind the Shocks. So pretty tight among the top 5.

Hopefully, the Shocks can hang in there in this afternoon's 2nd round.

The Shockers were doing okay but closed pretty poorly over their final four holes and balloned to 16-over par in Round 2, 11 shots off of their morning round. That drops them to 6th place at 21-over par, 7 shots behind the leader Missouri State.

Aussie freshman Mackenzie Wilson led the way again with an even par 72. She is in a 3-way tie for the lead on the individual leader board. Fellow freshman Brooklyn Benn shot a 4 over 76 which was 5 strokes better than her morning round. However, Brooklyn was 2-under through 14 holes and went triple bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey over her final 4 holes. Megan Lucas and Mar Vidal both shot 6-over 78 and Sarah Lawson had the throw away score at 11-over 83.

Madison Slayton, playing as an individual was 7-over 79 in round 2 and is 13-over after 2 rounds putting in her in at tie for 52nd on the individual scoreboard.

The 3rd and final round is tomorrow morning.

Wilson may be one to watch. That's some consistency for the most part and only a FR. Look forward to seeing how she competes today, as well as in the future.

Shocks off to poor start in round 3. They are 5-over after the first 3 holes while the five teams ahead of the are at even or under par.

Starting to appear that Round 1 was more of a fluke, but also maybe potential.

Go Shockers - Wilson Cards Top Five Finish in First Collegiate Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Freshman Mackenzie Wilson needed only one tournament to record her first career top five finish. The Australia native finished fourth in Wichita State's season-opening tournament, the Payne Stewart Memorial, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at Rivercut Golf Course.

As a team, Wichita State tied for sixth out of 15 teams behind rounds of 293, 304 and 302 and a total score of 899 (+35). Oklahoma City claimed the team title at 15-over par, 879.

Wilson finished just two strokes behind the individual medalist, carding a total score of 217 (+1). She turned in an opening round of 2-under par, 70 to begin her collegiate career. To round out her two-day total, Wilson recorded an even-par, 72 and a 3-over par, 75 in the second and third rounds.

Megan Lucas turned in her best round on the final day with an even-par, 72. Her 54-hole score of 226 (+10) put her in a tie for 29th.

Sarah Lawson came in tied for 46th at 15-over par, 231 (73-83-75). Lawson's 54-hole score of 231 marked a career-best. Coming in one stroke behind was Mar Vidal tying for 50th at 16-over par, 232 (74-78-80).

Also making her collegiate debut was Brooklyn Benn, who finished in a tie for 70th at 25-over par, 241. Madison Slayton competed as an individual and tied for 65th at 22-over par, 238.

Wichita State will next travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Johnie Imes Invitational, Sept. 26-28.

No doubt, Mackenzie Wilson's debut as a Shocker was the highlight of this tournament. But it wasn't exactly a powerhouse field. NAIA Oklahoma City University and host Missouri State tied for first at 15-over par. The Shockers tied for 6th at 35-over par.

Pretty consistent play for Mackenzie and the Shocks need to see a lot more of that throughout the lineup.

Fellow freshman Brooklyn Benn stumbled late to finish 12-over on the day including 6-over on her final 2 holes with a quintuple bogey (a 9 on a par 4) and a bogey. That was the throw away score for the day.

The Shocks still need to develop better depth and consistency.

Similar filed to what the Shocks faced in Springfield two weeks ago except with Missouri hosting their is 1 P-5 school in the mix. 4 Valley schools, MSU, Illinois State, Bradley and Drake are in the field. The Shocks finished 5th in this 14-team tournament last year.

Shocker line up is the same as two weeks ago except junior Madison Slayton, who played as in individual, moves into the team lineup in place of freshman Brooklyn Benn who is playing in this tournament as an individual.

Madison off to a bogey-bogey-bogey start. However, Brooklyn, playing as an individual, started off bogey-bogey-bogey, although Madison started her round on the front 9 and Brooklyn on the back nine.

The Shocker finished the front 9 with a score of 7-over par with Mar Vidal at even par, Sarah Lawson and Megan 2-over and Mackenzie Wilson at 3 over. Madison Slayton settled down to finish the front 9 at 4-over.

However, Sarah Lawson has started the back nine with a double-bogey and a triple-bogey, Mar Vidal started the back 9 with a snowman triple-bodey, Megan Lucas started the back none bogey-bogey-bogey and Madison Slayton bogeyed 2 of 3 holes to start her back 9. The Shocks have fallen to dead last at 17-over par.

The Shocks stabilized their games over the final 6 holes as Mackenzie, Megan, Sarah and Mar combined to play those final 6 holes in 3-over par as the Shocks finished round 1 at 20 over and moving up to 10th place with the solid finish.

Mar Vidal had 3 pars, 3 bogeys and 3 birdies on the front nine, started the back 9 with a snowman on the par 10th for a triple-bogey and then parred the final 8 holes to finish at 3-over 75 to lead the Shocks. Mackenzie Wilson had 5 bogies and a birdie for a 4-over 76 but parred 8 holes on the back 9. Megan Lucas only had 8 par on the day but managed to come in at 5-over 77. She had 8 bogeys, a birdie and an eagle on her round. Sarah Lawson came in at 8-over 80 and was hurt by her double-bogey, triple-bogey start on the back 9. Madison Slayton had the throw away scored at 10-over 82.

Freshman Brooklyn Benn parred 10 holes in before going bogey, triple-bodey, par on her final 3 holes to finish at 8-over 80.

I find the scoring interesting this year. This is the same course as last year's tournament. Missouri won last year's tournament at 1-over for 3 rounds. ORU was 2nd at 3-over and Mercer was 3rd at 5-over. Missouri is leading after the 1st round at 1-over so they have shot at matching their winning score of last year.

Lipscomb is in 2nd at 4-over and FIU is in 3rd at 9-over. The Shockers are 20-over vs a 3-round total of 27-over on this course last year. Some other comparisons of this year's round 1 scores vs last years 3-round scores are +18 vs +25, Eastern Kentucky +15 vs +29, Missouri State +25 vs +33 and Bradley +22 vs +40, and South Dakota +24 vs +52.

Whether seems to be good. Perhaps they used their toughest pin placements in this opening round. We'll see what the next couple of days bring.

In today's 2nd round in Columbia the Shockers started the round on the back 9. Their total team scores on the back 9 today was 10-over with the top 4 scores being 6-over par. In the 1st round yesterday the Shocks were collectively 19-over par with the top 4 scores being 13-over par. So a noticeable improvement in round 2.

The Shocks played the front 9 in collectively in 15-over par today vs 10-over par yesterday with the top 4 scores 11-over today vs 7-over yesterday.

Overall, they finish at 18-over on the day (top 4 scores) and are now 38-over for the Tournament. Despite being 2 strokes better than yesterday they lost 2 spots in the team standings falling from 10th to 12th place.

Round 2 scores on the par 4 layout were Mackenzie Wilson 72, Mar Vidal 76, Megan Lucas 77. with Madison Slayton and Sarah Lawson both shooting 79.

Brooklyn Benn playing as an individual recorded an 82.

Go Shockers - Wilson Cracks Top 15 at Johnie Imes Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman Mackenzie Wilson continued her solid play with a top 15 finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational.

As a team, Wichita State finished 12th behind rounds of 308, 306 and 301 and a total score of 915 (+51). Missouri claimed the team title at 13-over par.

In just her second collegiate tournament, Wilson now has a top 15 finish to go along with a top five placing at the Payne Stewart Memorial. The freshman saved her best round for last, carding an even-par 72 in Wednesday's final 18 holes. She finished tied for 14th at 6-over par, 222.

Megan Lucas was a model of consistency in Columbia, turning in a 5-over par, 77 in all three rounds to tie for 42nd at 15-over par, 231.

Mar Vidal was in the hunt for a spot in the top 20 after 36 holes, but had a tough final 18 holes. Vidal finished tied for 61st behind a 19-over par, 235 (75-76-84).

Madison Slayton and Sarah Lawson came in tied for 65th at 20-over par, 236. Slayton tied a career low round with a 3-over par, 75, on Wednesday. Brooklyn Benn competed as an individual, placing 83rd at 34-over par.

Wichita State has a quick turnaround with a trip to Omaha, Neb., for the Big O Classic, Oct. 3-4.
                              Outside of Wilson....

Suppose Lucas was consistent. Vidal had a bad meet. Slayton started out poorly but improved each round. Lawson the same.
