  • Shocker SB at Nebraska with South Dakota State

The Shockers travel to Lincoln for two games each with Nebraska and South Dakota State. Due to the threat of bad weather, the schedule has been altered. The Shocks now play Nebraska at 5 pm Thursday, and South Dakota State at 12 pm on Friday immediately followed by another game with the Huskers. Their final game of the weekend is with the Jackrabbits at noon on Saturday.

For some reason, these games are not a Classic Invitational. Or some such.

Nebraska, members of Big 10, have a record of 8-6, playing tournaments at Northern Iowa and New Mexico State and a three-game set with Kansas this past weekend. They have losses to Northern Iowa and South Dakota State and a win over future Shocker opponent Omaha. They took two of three from KU. They have not played a particularly challenging schedule, but the Huskers have not been the program they once were for several years now.

The offensive leaders for Nebraska are Billie Andrews (OPS of 1.501 and seven homers), Sydney Gray (1.404 and six homers), and Abbie Squier (1.191). Courtney Wallace (ERA of 4.23 and WHIP of 1.51) and Olivia Ferrell (3.27 and 1.36) have the vast majority of the innings for the Husker pitching.

South Dakota Sate are members of the Summit League where they are a preseason pick for first. They return the 2021 Summit Player of the Year in Cylie Halvorson and the Pitcher of the Year in Tori Kniesche. The current record for the Jackrabbits is 8-4 with tournaments at the UNI-Dome and in San Diego. They have win two wins over Northern Iowa and one against Nebraska. Their tournament at North Texas this past weekend was canceled, but they arranged a two-game series with Creighton where they shut them out twice and scored 26 runs. Ouch!

Offensive leaders for SDS are Allison Yoder (1.106), Rozelyn Carillo (1.070), and Lindsey Culver (.995). Halvorson is off to a rough start but does lead the team with four homers. In the circle, Kniesche (2.82 and 1.23) and Grace Glanzer (3.69 and 1.64) have most of the innings for the Jackrabbits.

The record for the Shockers is 9-4. Caitlin, Erin, Kenzie, and Alison have all started games. Their ERAs are 2.88 and above; their WHIPs are 1.26 and above. Figuring out what the conference rotation might look like appears to still be a work-in-progress. One would think Caitlin, Erin, and Alison are the most likely.

Leaders on offense are Addison (1.533 and eight homers), Sydney (1.487 and four homers), and Zoe (1.136 and a team-leading six doubles). Bailey and Neleigh are not far behind.

No Bailey Urban in the lineup. Hope everything is alright. She was off to such a strong start on the season.

          Wondered the same. [Supper Break]

In the first, Addison singles and Neleigh walks for two baserunners for the Shocks. Addison snuck another stolen base in there. The Husker also get two baserunners, but neither team scores. 0-0 after one.

Lauren homers to lead off the second for the Shockers. One out later, Lainee doubles, and one out later, Sydney homers. 1-2-3 for Nebraska in the bottom half. 3-0 after two.

Sydney showing a bit more pop in her bat this year. She has 5 homers now in her 13th game of the year. Last year she had 7 total. And, at least so far, she hasn't sacrificed on batting average or on-base percentage. She has struck out 3 times though but I think we can live with that.

Just heard on the Husker broadcast that Charlotte took down #6 Virginia Tech during the mid-week.

Zoe reaches on an error in the third and moves to second on a walk to Lauren with two outs. From there, Krystin singles her home.

The Huskers lead off their third with two walks from Erin. Seven balls in a row in that sequence. Ugh! A double and wild pitch score those two walkers, but three pop-outs follow. 4-2 after three.

Sydney reaches on an error in the Shocker fourth, but nothing else is going on. With two outs, a walk and errors by Krystin on two consecutive batters score a run for Nebraska. Then a single scores two more. Three unearned runs. 4-5 after four.

Three up, three down for the Shocks in the fifth. Same goes for the Huskers. 4-5 after five.

Same song, another verse in the Shocker sixth.

Nebraska leads off with a homer to extend their lead. After a hit batter, Caitlin is on in relief. An infield single and both runners advance on a error on the play by Sydney. Bad throw? Trouble is a-brewing. And it arrives in the form of a three-run homer. The Andrews Sisters hit the home runs. Then a double. Is Caitlin just not useful in relief? I think this is the second really bad outing in that role. With two outs, a single scores another run. 4-10 after six complete.

That's going to make a comeback very, very difficult. A 2-run deficit with the top of the order up in the 7th the Shocks had a chance. A 6-run deficit not so much.

I wondered who might take that and run with it. :)

Sydney leads off with a single, and Zoe singles her to third with one out. But Neleigh and Lolo are outs.

                            Shockers 4-10 Nebraska

Seven hits by the Shocks with two of them by Sydney including her home run. Lauren also homered.

Erin went five innings with only four of the runs she gave up being earned. Four hits, three walks, and two hit batters given up by Erin.

It appears Alison gets the start against SDS at noon tomorrow.
