  • RV/-- Shocker SB at Niner Invitational

The Shockers travel to North Carolina to play in the Niner Invitational at Charlotte this weekend. They open against Northern Iowa at 9 am on Friday and play Charlotte at 2 pm later in the day. Saturday's games are against Minnesota at 1130 am and Charlotte at 430 pm. On Sunday, the Shocks close out their play in the Invitational with a game against Minnesota at 9 am. All times are CT.

A little background about the Charlotte nickname. Obviously, Charlotte is not in California although there was gold mining in the area a few years before the Gold Rush. In 1949, a UNC off-campus center in Charlotte was changed to be Charlotte College, eventually becoming UNC-Charlotte. Although that is the official school name, the athletic teams are identified as the Charlotte Niners.

Northern Iowa is the pick to win the MVC, barely edging out Southern Illinois. They opened their season two weekends ago in the tournament they host in the UNI-Dome. They defeated Nebraska, lost twice to South Dakota State, defeated Omaha, and lost to Iowa State - a decent enough schedule. All of the games except one were decided by two runs or less. The Panthers did not play this past weekend. Mya Dodge has an OPS of 1.209 with no one else above .800. Samantha Heyer (ERA of 1.91 and WHIP of 1.09) and Kailyn Packard (2.33 and 1.58) are the leaders in the circle although Hailey Sanders has two of the five starts.

Charlotte are the preseason favorite in Conference USA. Their catcher, Bailey Vannoy is the Preseason Player of the Year and was selected to the Preseason All-Conference for the third consecutive year. Kourtney Gremillion and Cori Hendersdon were also named to the Preseason Team. The Niners have already hosted two tournaments and played a couple of mid-week games. Their record is 10-1, but the schedule is a bit soft. Notre Dame (a loss) and James Madison (a win) are two opponents RV or better. Vannoy (1.490), Henderson (1.266), and Ella Chancey (1.236) have the top three OPS. Lindsey Walljasper is the clear ace of the staff (1.69 and 1.03) with the win over JMU. Amelia Wiercioch (0.78 and 0.61) and Madelyn Wright are next in line innings-wise.

Minnesota have played at a tournament hosted by UCF and another hosted by Arizona State. Their record is 7-4. The record against RV or better teams is 3-3 including a win over UCF. Natalie DenHartog (1.159), and Chloe Evans (1.018) lead the OPS list with three others in the high .900s. Emily Leavitt (5.45 and 1.82) and Autumn Pease (3.55 and 1.42) have all of the innings but two. The Golden Gophers feel a bit like the Shockers - very nice hitting with uncertain pitching.

The Shockers are led offensivey by Sydney (1.725), Addison (1.605), and Neleigh (1.197) with Zoe just a tick behind. Alison (2.10 and 1.30), Kenzie (2.47 and 1.15), and Erin (3.50 and 1.50) have the three best ERAs, but all five (including Jordyn and Caitlin) have innings.

This may be the most challenging tournament the Shockers play pre-conference.

Charlotte uses Sidearm for their LiveStats. Sidearm uses the same "form" for every game of the tournament. If you are in and out as I am today, you may miss the end of a game, and the next game is in the third inning. You have to wait for a boxscore to be posted to find out the result of the previous game. Or, more likely, find out via Twitter. So it goes.

As noted, the recent "no-injuries" lineup is starting.

UNI starts their first with two walks, but a popout to short starts a DP that ends the inning. Packard is in the circle for the Panthers, and she sets the Shocks down in order. 0-0 after one.

An infield single and home run gives UNI an early lead. 2-0 as the Shockers come to bat.

Zoe walks on her tenth pitch, and Lolo doubles her to third. With one out, Kristyn hits a come-backer to the pitcher who throws the ball away, scoring both Zoe and Lolo. Jessica follows with a single that sends Krystyn to third, and Lauren walks to load the bases. With two outs, Addison clears the bases with a grand slam. Bunch of unearned runs this inning. Shocks lead 6-2 after two.

Grand Salami Addie B. You don’t pitch to McKinney and Addie with the bases loaded and come away unscathed.

In the third inning, UNI leads off with a single and a stolen base with a ground out moving the runner to third. A wild pitch later, she scores. A walk to Bailey in the Shocker third leads nowhere. 6-3 after three.

Caitlin on to start the fourth for the Shocks.

                  OK, Twitter time for me.

UNI managed to get Syd to ground to 1st who forced the runner from 3rd at home. But Addie picked her up. If the left one don't get you, the right one will.

That was a 2-out grans slam from Addie.

Caitlyn Bingham replaces Kenzie in the circle to start the 4th. I don't know why but that makes me a little nervous.

Caitlyn gives up a 2-out walk and nothing else.

The Shocks get a 1-out infield single but nothing else in the bottom of the 4th from the top of the lineup.

Caitlyn opens the top of the 5th with a walk to the 9-hole hitter. Gets the next two batters and jumps ahead of the 3-hole hitter 0-2. Count goes to 2-2 followed by a home run to make it 6-5. This is the kind of crap Caitlyn does. She struggles to make the pitches when she really needs to.

UNI helps bail Caitlyn out. Errors by the UNI SS and 2B followed by a Bailey Urban home run puts the Shocks up 9-5. So far Bailey has seemed to have elevated her offense nicely from where she was last year. Shocks have really made UNI pay dearly for their miscues.

Caitlyn works a solid, 10 pitch 1-2-3 top of the 6th. Shockers down in order on 7 pitches in the bottom of the 6th. That's about as quick of an inning as you will see. The changeovers lasted longer than live action.

Caitlyn gives up a 1-out single but nothing else in the 7th and closed out a 9-5 Shockers win. UNI scored 5 runs on only 5 hits and the Shocks scored 9 runs and only 6 hits. UNI had 4 errors to none for the Shocks.

UNI actually did a good job on Syd and Addie as both of them went 1-4. The timely homers by Addie and Bailey along with the 4 UNI errors where the difference in the game.

Burbs bomb, 9-5 WSU. UNI’s 4 errors along with a couple of timely home runs have really aided the WSU offense today.

I don't know if spitting the UNI game between Kenzie and Caitlyn was pre-planned or not. It will be interesting to see if the Shocks split up the Charlotte game in the circle between Erin and Alison like they did the UNI game.
