Shocker WBB 2021-22 Non-Conference Games

The Lady Shocks picked up their 2nd consecutive Rocky Mountain high atlitude win with a 76-61 win over host Denver finishing strong with a 22-13 final quarter.

The Shocks shot 41.4% from the field including only 2-12 on treys. 3 point shooting continues to be a weakness for the Shockers. The Shocks only had 11 assists on 29 baskets. However, the Shocks were excellent at the free throw line hitting 16-17 vs only 6-8 for Denver. The Shockers dominated the boards 47-25 (23-6 on the offensive boards). The Shocks also only turned the ball over 12 times as they seem to have improved quite a bit in that regard. Denver had 17 turnovers.

Despite playing at altitude the Shocks basically played 7 players. Shamaryah Duncan played 12 minutes and Carla Budane 3 minutes otherwise it was the 7 core players. The 5 starters (Strong, Colbert, Bastin, McCully and Bremaud) plus McCarty and Asinde off the bench.

The Shockers did have good scoring balance in this game. 5 players were in double figures with Bastin adding 8 points and Bremaud 5.

Trajata Colbert had one of her better games if not her best game as a Shocker with a 17 point-13 rebound double-double. Trajata was 7-13 from the field and 3-3 from the line.

Mariah McCully followed with 13 points but was only 5-17 from he field including 1-7 on treys.

Jane Asinde had 12 points on a very efficient 5-6 from the field and 2-3 from the line and grabbed 6 rebounds. The juco transfer continues to play well in her first year as a Shocker.

DJ McCarty had a sneaky good game. She scored 11 points on 3-8 from the field plus 5-5 from the line. The slightly built guard also snagged 7 rebounds, led the Shocks with 5 assists vs 2 turnovers and added 3 steals.

Asia Strong added 10 points and 8 rebounds but she was only 5-13 from the field and had 3 turnovers. Asia did not get to the free throw line.

The Shocks finish off a stretch of 3 road games at Northern Iowa next Saturday before returning home for a couple of Thanksgiving week buy games vs Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State.

UNI is typically well coached and a tough challenge for the Shocks. The Shocks lost to UNI last year 91-93 in double overtime.

1st Quarter

Tied up at 18-all at the end of the 1st quarter.

Shocks had a 12-7 lead but were unable to build on that. Put a couple freshman in with about 2:30 left in the quarter, in Platanova and Anciaux. Platanova promptly turned it over with a double dribble out in space and immediately came back out of the game. Anciaux had 1 rebound, 1 turnover and 1 foul in her 2 minutes.

Both teams shooting in the mid 40's but the Shocks are 0-2 from three (both shots blocked) and UNI is 3-6.

2nd Quarter

Asia picks up a foul at the 6:48 mark and another foul at the 6:46 mark and she goes to the bench.

With the Shocks up 30-25 Trajata picks up her 2nd foul at the 3:58 mark and she goes to the bench. UNI promptly scores 3 quick baskets on layups including a put back on the offensive boards to take a 31-30 lead. After a Shocker timeout a 4th consecutive layup puts UNI up 33-30. Basitn hits 1 of 2 free throws than scores off a steal and assist from McCarty to tie the game at 33-all. UNI gets its 5th consecutive layup to take a 35-33 lead at the half.

D.J. McCarty gave the Shocks a big lift after coming off the bench midway through the 1st quarter. She has 9 points on 4-6 from the field including 1-1 from behind the arc. She also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Too many turnovers for the Shocks with 9, but UNI also has 9 turnovers.

3rd Quarter

UNI's Nicole Kroeger his 3 treys in the first 3 minutes of the quarter and UNI extends there led to 44-37. HCKA calls a time out.

Kroeger hits her 4th 3 pointer of the quarter and UNI extends the lead to 50-39. Steve Strain said she was side open. Apparently, Maria McCully was the guilty Shocker. HCKA has to use another time out.

The Shockers need to regroup and start playing some defense which was seemingly the strength of this team.

Trajata on the bench with 3 fouls followed by Asia with 4 fouls with 2:18 left in the quarter.

The Shocks pretty much implode in the 3rd quarter in all phases of the game as UNI outcores them 29-12 to take a 19 point lead at 64-45 in the 4th quarter.

I don't think the Shocks had a single player who played very well in this quarter.

Maybe not time to "Put it in the Ol' Deep Freeze" but close.

4th Quarter

4 of the Shocker starters are on the bench to start the 4th quarter. Mariah McCully is the only starter in the lineup to start the quarter. I don't think this is going to help anything but HCKA apparently wants to send a message.

UNI opens the quarter on a 6-0 run to make it 70-45 and HCKA throws in the towel taking McCully out and putting Tanya Platanova in.

UNI makes it 74-45 before Jane Asinde scores a layup. UNI makes a line change.

UNI outscores the Shocks 23-10 in the quarter (52-22) in the 2nd half to finish if an 87-55 demoliton of the Shocks.

UNI shot 55% from the field including 12-25 (48%) from behind the arc. Lucky for the Shocks UNI only hit 9-15 from the line. UNI had 23 assists on 33 baskets while the Shocks only had 9 assists on 24 baskets. The Shocks who had shot 88% from the line in the first 3 games only made 5-12 today. The Shocks also had 21 turnovers, by far their worst game of the season. The Shocks continue to struggle from distance hitting on 2-8 threes. At leas they have the sense not to take too many of those.

Of the Shockers 5 starters on Trajata Colbert was halfway decent. Asia Strong, Mariah McCully, Carla Bremaud and Seraphine Bastin were not good.

D.J. McCarty and Shamaryah Duncan were decent but D.J. had 5 turnovers. No one was very good in the 2nd half.

HCKA said her team competed will in the 1st half but simply showed no heart coming out in the 2nd half. She was really disappointed in her team.

The Shockers have a full roster of 15 scholarship players this year but they really are not that deep. Perhaps 7-8 players deep and only a couple of those showed up today.

The second half was a major step back for this team and perhaps shows their 3-0 start may have been a little fools gold.

The Shockers return home to continue their in-season exhibition schedule against SWAC members Prairie View A&M (0-2) and Alcorn State (0-3). So far the SWAC is 3-30 against D-1 competition this year.

Not sure that is what this Shocker team needs at this point but I guess it may give HCKA a chance to plyer her bench a bit more. However, outside of McCarty, Asinde and Duncan the Shocker bench looks from from being ready to contribute much.

The Lady Shocks are back home tonight hosting Prairie View A&M.

The first 10 games of the Shocker non-con schedule are not exactly a murderers row. UNI (3-1), who beat the the Shocks 87-55 in their most recent game, and South Dakota (1-2 in D-1 games) are perhaps the only two teams that my be Top 100 teams so far. The other 8 games are against teams that are a combined 3-23 against D-1 competition so far this season.

Then the Shocks finish off the non-con against North Texas, probably comparable to UNI and SD (maybe slightly below them), Kansas and Oklahoma. Probably won't know until those final 3 games of the non-con schedule very much about what this team is capable off. The Shocks totally imploded in the second half of the UNI game. Hopefully that won't be repeated. The Shockers should head into this 3 game stretch at 8-2, although that would be a very weak 8-2. Maybe the Shocks can pull of a win against South Dakota which would be a good road win but for now I have that one in the loss column.

BTW, this is off-topic but how bad is Wisconsin women's basketball this year? Wisconsin's only win this year was a against very lowly regarded St. Thomas and yesterday the Badgers lost to Chicago State at home in overtime. The Shockers beat Chicago State 78-34 at home.

The Shocks cruised to an 86-71 win over Prairie View in a game that wasn't as close as the final score might indicate.

The Shocks got off to a bit of a slow start as the game was tied at 17-all after the 1st quarter. The Shocks put it it away in the 2nd and 3rd quarters outsoring Prairie View 55-29 to lead 72-46 heading into the final quarter. HCKA pretty much played her deep reserves in the 4th quarter and Prairie View outscored the Shocker reserves 25-14 to narrow the final margin to 15.

The Shocks starting center Trajata Colbert was suited up but did not play. I'm guessing a minor injury. Juco transfer Jane Asinde got her first start in place of Trajate and responded with a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double while Asia Strong and Mariah McCully each had 14 and D.J. McCarty chipped in 13 points. The Shockers 5-8 point guard Seraphine Bastin grabbed 10 rebounds and added 7 points.

The Shocks shot a decent 47.5% from the field but were only 3-12 on 3 pointers as they continue to struggle from behind the arc.

The Shocks outrebounded Prairie View 46-34.

The Shockers home exhibition schedule continues vs Alcorn State on Friday afternoon.

The Shocks lead 46-21 at the half. against an overmatched Alcorn State team. Kind of a turnover fest so far. Alcorn State with 18 and the Shockers with 11 turnovers in the 1st half.

The Shocker open up the 3rd quarter on a 19-0 run to lead 65-21 at the mid-quarter media timeout.

That may about do it for the Shocker starters for the day.

The Shockers leave the startes in for a couple more minutes before making a line change with 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter with a 67-27 lead.

Shocks lead 75-33 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

D. J. McCarty leaves the game with 8:45 remaining from an apparent knee injury. Doesn't look too promising. The Shockers despite having 15 players on their roster are not that deep. And D.J. was certainly a key component of the 7 or 8 deep they do go. Looks like she might have hyperextended it but hard to say. That would be a lot better than an ACL tear.

Shocks 90 - Alcorn State 49.

One of the best things this Shocker team does is shoot free throws. They were 20-24.

Jane Asinde had her 2nd straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She had 5 offensive rebounds and most, if not all, of those were rebounding her own close in misses.

Seraphine Bastin had a very efficient game with 15 points on 5-5 from the field and 4-4 from the line while grabbing 5 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists and making 3 steals. Her only negative was 3 turnovers but as much as she has the ball in her hands she is going to make a few.

The Shockers move to 5-1 on the season but the combined record of the 5 opponents they have beaten is 1-21. Considering they lost by 32 at Nortrhern Iowa I think the jury is definitely still out on this team.

Hopefully DJ McCarty's injury is not too serious. While she doesn't start I would consider her one of the top 3 or 4 players on the team.

Duran is not redshirting as she played 17 minutes against Chicago State. So I am assuming illness/Covid prototcols or injury. But I have heard nothing about her.

Another player who has not seen any action this year so far is Jayze'lee Waihi out of New Zealand. She is still listed on the roster but again I do not know what her situation is.

Tanya Platonova had her best game as a Shocker today but not sure what it means against this competition.

I totally agree that losing DJ would be a huge blow to this team.

The Shocks take on Northwestern State (Natchitoches, LA) on Monday evening at 6:00 pm. Arguably this will be the 5th consecutive home exhibition game for the Shockers this season.

Northwestern State is 3-2 but the 3 wins were against Centenary (D-III), Texas A&M - Texarkana (NAIA), and Louisiana College (NAIA). There two loses were at Grambling State (60-68) and at K-State (36-70).

The Shocker are 5-1 but there SOS is current ranked 342. The Shocks 5 wins have come against opponents with a combined record of 3-25 so far this season.

The Shocks only loss was a 55-87 blowout at the hands of Northern Iowa.

The jury is definitely still out on this Shocker team and we probably won't find out much more with this Northwestern State game.

The main thing that we might take away from this game is what is the status of DJ McCarty who left Friday's game against Alcorn State with a knee injury.

After the Northwestern State game the Shocks will step up in class a little bit with games vs ORU, @ South Dakota, vs Grambling State and at North Texas before closing out the non-con vs Kansas and at Oklahoma.

The ORU game is in Koch Arena. Yes, Scott Schumacher's daughter, Regan, is still on the roster. She has her undergrad degree and is a grad student. She is 6-2 5th year player averaging 3 points and 3 rebounds a game so far this year.

Shocks vs Northwestern State

Shocks off to a slow start trail at the end of the 1st quarter 15-17. Not too concerned at his point. The Shocks look like the better team and have a pretty good size advantage. NWS is 8-15 from the field and the Shocks are 3-15 but the Shocks have a 7 point advantage at the free throw line.

One bit of good news is that DJ McCarty is playing and looks to be moving well.

Shocks lead at the half in what can only be described as an ugly game. Primary reason the Shocks lead is that NWS has two players taller than 6 foot, 6-1 Junior Jordan Todd and 6-3 Sophomore Jasmin Dixon, who both went to the bench with 7 minutes left in the half with 2 fouls each and their next biggest player, 5-11 Jordan McLemore picked up her 2nd foul with 6 minutes to go in the half.. The Shocks have outrebound NWS 37-17 including a 21-7 advantage on the offensive boards. However, the Shocks have only scored 11 points off of their 21 offensive rebounds.

Neither team shooting well as NWS is 10-32 (31%) from the field including 2-9 on treys and while the Shockers are 9-39 (23%) including 3-11 on treys.

The Shocks lead comes from the free throw line where they are 10-14 vs 4-6 for NWS.

I expect the Shocks to pull away at some point in the 2nd half. But hard to believe the can be up +20 on the boards and only have a 5 point lead.

In the 3rd quarter NWS cut a 9 point Shocker lead to 1 at 43-42 but back-to-back treys by DJ McCarty and a layup by Trajata Colbert off of a nice Seraphine Bastin assist pushed the Shocker lead back to 7 at the end of the quarter at 51-44.

The Shocks finish it off 70-61 behind DJ McCarty's hot 2 point shooting. The rebounding was even in the 2nd half. The Shocks did have 21 turnovers which is too many. Carla Bremaud had her best game of the year including 3-6 on treys but DJ McCarty and Trajata Colbert provide the spark the Shocks needed off the bench. DJ lead the way with 16 points, all in the 2nd half including 5-5 on 2nd half treys. Trajata Colbert scored 9 of 14 points in the 2nd half. She finished 6-12 from the field and added 9 rebounds. Asia Strong, Mariah McCully and Jane Asinde did not have good games as they combined to shoot 4-27 from the field and had 12 of the Shockers' 21 turnovers.

The Shocks probably had their best three point shooting of the game hit 9-21 for 43% with Carla and DJ hitting 8-12 while the rest of the team was 1-9. Coming into this game DJ was only 2-7 from 3. She was 5-6 tonight and everyone one of her makes, all in the 2nd half, pretty much hit nothing but net.

Northwestern State was 9-25 for 36% on treys and they were only making treys at a 19% clip coming in. So I think this may have been their best game of the season so far.

So good to see that DJ's injury against Alcorn State wasn't serious. Not sure the Shocks would have won tonight without her.

Yep. Playing the last three minutes like it was the first three minutes. Big height advantage but not much touch around the basket.

I don't believe it's been extended beyond 2024 (so 2 seasons after this one).

Good question, but I hope more than the results in recent years.

I think that if in fact she hasn't been extended since 2019 (I won't swear to it but that's what I found) then there is certainly some pressure to win. You just aren't going to win recruiting battles with a 1-4 year contract, and she's apparently sitting on 2.5 right now.
