Lady Shocks at Illinois State and Indiana State

In a somewhat surprising outcome Friday night Creighton drilled Northern Iowa 74-48 in Cedar Falls. I anticipated that UNI would miss Jaqui Kalin a lot. However, I think they also miss Lizzie Boeck's presence in the middle quite a bit.

Today's Game

I just turned on the TV & found the Lady Shocks game with Indiana State going on. The game is close now - about 16-16. But, the key question is this: Where is Jessica Diamond? She's not in the game & not on the bench.

Game started out as a layup drill for Indiana State. The Sycamores built as much as a 6 point lead. Haleigh brought the Shocks back into a tie, but now back down 23-25.

Indiana State has won 10 consecutive Senior Day games.

Shocks up 31-29 at the half. Not sure what is going on with Jessica. Shocks need to cut down on the turnovers. 11 in the 1st half.

Missouri State and Illinois State in OT not that it really makes any difference at this point. Missouri State and Illinois State clearly the best two teams in the league. Shocks now playing to hold on to 3rd place and meet their preseason expectations.

Inidana State 63 - Wichita State 51

Shocks simply did not have it today offensively. They did a good job on the boards but simply could not make baskets in the second half. Only shot 31.4% for the game. Not sure what the second half was but it was probably worse than that.

One bright spot for the Lady Shocks was the play of RS Fr Kelsey Jacobs who scored a career high 9 points on 4-7 from the field, 1-1 from the line and added 4 rebounds.

Illinois State 76-80(OT) Missouri State

The Bears score the last seven points of the game, making free throws while the Redbirds did not.

That should pretty much wrap 1st place up for the Bears with only UNI and Bradley at home remaining on their schedule both of which they should win. They have the best talent so that is as it should be over the course of an 18 game schedule.

That does give the Shocks the opportunity to tie Illinois State for second place. The Shocks also get Bradley and UNI at home nest Thursday and Saturday at home. Both are games the Shocks can win or lose. Expect a lot of zone defense.

Illinois State gets the league's two bottom feeders on the road next week at Evansville and at SIU. They should win both of those so the Shocks need to win both of their games to maintain the 2nd place tie. Should this occur the Redbirds own the tiebreaker for MVC Tournament seeding purposes and would be the #2 seed with the Lady Shocks being the #3 seed. Creighton is lurking around at 11-6 with a game remaining at Drake so I guess it is possible for the Shocks to fall as low as 4th.

Shocks need to return home and get some momentum heading into the MVC Tournament.
