Molly OBrien playing well tonight. Still down 5 under. Redbirds going to the line again. Shocks just can't keep the ball from going into the big posts.
Foul again. Redbirds to the line for the 5th straight possession.
Back to a 6 point game. 62-56 about a minute to go....Shocks miss 2 good chances....layup good. Down 4 and we foul again. Under 50 seconds. Redbirds in the double bonus.
Shocks could not get a stop down the stretch and Illinois State made hay at the FT line.
Shocks battled but they are just not built to beat a good team in a half-court game. Illinois State does a very good job of taking care of the ball. Only 10 turnovers for Illinois State, about half what the Shocks normally force.
Haleigh and Jessica both had very fine games for the Shocks, but just did not have enough from the supporting cast. The Shocks did a decent job on Broadway and Sykes but they allowed Marly Hall and Jamie Russell to score 18 points each and that was just more than the Shocks could overcome.
Shocks have now fallen out of 1st place for the 1st time this season. Unfortunately, the Shocks no longer control their destiny. They will need some help.
Looking at the stats, it looks like the Lady Shocks did everything well in the game with Illinois State last night except turn the ball over too many times - 20 in all. They outrebounded Illinois State which is a big improvement over the game they had with them here in Wichita a few weeks ago. Their shooting % was good - slightly better than what Illinois State had. They also played their depth more than Illinois State did.

Yes and as I said earlier Illinois State is the one MVC team that seems to stand up to the Shockers pressure defense well. The game was very competitive with the score tied 4 times and 14 lead changes. It sounded like both teams were playing very hard as you would expect with so much on the line. Certainly can not fault the Shocks for their effort.
The Shocks were slightly better from the field 47.2% to 45.5% with both teams making 25 field goals. The Shocks made 5 of 12 treys vs 4 of 16 for the Redbirds. Both teams shot 87.5% from the line but the Redbirds had twice as many opportunities (16 vs 8). They were nails from the line down the stretch. Shocks did very well on the boardds 34-27. As you point out the only real problem for the Shocks was the 20 turnovers vs only 10 for the Redbirds.
Haleigh had one of her better, if not her best, games of the season scoring 22 points on 8-12 FG (2-4 treys), 4-4 FT, 10 rebounds and 2 steals in 36 minutes. Reminded me of how she played at the end of last season. If this is the start of another run like that the Shocks will be very tough down the stretch.
Jessica continued her solid play this year with 16 points on 7-14 FG (2-4 treys) and only 1 turnover. I can only remember one bad game for Jessica this year. She has been very consistent.
It wasn't that long ago that the Shockers would commonly lose on the road by 25+ points to the Valley contenders. The way they compete on the road, as much as anything, is an indication of how much progress has been made under Jody.
All of a sudden Molly O'Brien is getting more minutes playing 26 mintues last night to follow up her 16 minutes against SIU. She struggled from the field going 1-5 and turned the ball over 3 times. However, she did grab 6 rebounds and had 4 assists. I think we have a good pair of true freshmen in Molly and Alex and both of them are starting to figure things out. RS Fr. Kelsey Jacobs is starting to see a little more playing time also and holds her own for the most part.
Casey Garrison played the first two minutes of the first half and the last two minutes, fouls not being an issue. Did she ding her right thumb again? She started the second half and played eight of the first ten or so minutes before sitting out the rest of the game, playing a total of twelve minutes.

That is interesting. Nothing in the game write-up on the Bears website. Nothing mentioned on the Bears fan board.
Could be a number of things I guess. Maybe she aggravated her thumb/wrist injury. Maybe she was ill. Maybe MSU simply thought they could handle ISU without Casey and wanted to save/protect her for the game with Illinois State on Sunday that may just win the Valley title for them if the can come away with a win.
So the Shocks need a win over Indiana State and root for an Illinois State win over Missouri State on Sunday to restore the race back to a three-way tie with 2 games to play.
