  • Shocker SB at Mizuno Classic (Oklahoma State)

The Shockers play their final regular-season tournament beginning Thursday in Stillwater at the Mizuno Classic hosted by Oklahoma State.

The Shocks play Oklahoma State at 5 pm on Thursday. Two games on Friday are at 11 am against UT San Antonio and at 130 pm versus Kansas City. They close out the tournament on Saturday with games at 11 am against UTSA and against the Cowgirls at 4 pm.

Oklahoma State are a preseason pick for third in the Big XII behind Oklahoma and Texas. They are currently ranked #8/6 in the two primary polls and have a record of 20-2 with a record of 4-1 against ranked teams. They have a win over Tulsa (7-0) and a loss to Houston (2-4).

Alysen Febrey (OPS of 1.335 and seven home runs), Chyenne (no typo) Factor (1.075), and Hayley Busby (1.038) are the leading hitters. Carrie Eberle (ERA of 0.71 and WHIP of 0.81) and Kelly Maxwell (1.00 and 0.67) have about two-thirds of the starts for the Cowgirls.

UTSA are the pick for fourth in the six-team Western Division of Conference USA. The Roadrunners have a record of 5-8. Riley Grunberg (1.166 and five homers) and Celeste Loughman (1.000) are the leading hitters. Both were selections to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Seven different pitchers have at least one start for UTSA. Clarissa Hernandez (2.86 and 1.09) and Jamie Gilbert (3.00 and 1.57) each have three starts.

Kansas City are a pick for fifth of the seven teams in the Summit League. Their current record is 11-4 with a win over Houston (9-3) and losses to #1 Oklahoma (2-6) and RV Liberty (4-5) this past weekend.

The leading hitters for the Roos are Lia Lombardini (1.373) and Ally Vonfeldt (1.017). The two pitchers are Camryn Stickel (2.33 and 1.08) and Mia Hoveland, a Preseason Player to Watch, at 2.85 and 1.31.

Looks like good to very good group of games to finish off pre-AAC play. Weahter will be a bit on the cool side, especially tomorrow evening's 5:00 pm game against the Cowgirls. with temps forecasted to be in the 47-50 degree range but with north winds of 15-20. Friday looks to be a nice sunny day with temps projected to be 45-55 degrees during the two Friday games but winds at much more pleasant 7-8 mph out of the ENE. Saturday appears to be a bit warmer projected to top out at 62 and switching to out of the south but picking up again at 20 mph. So a varied set of weather conditions to cope with and adjust to.

Some competition for the attention of Shocker fans on Thursday evening. Men's BB vs Drake in the NCAA play-in round at 5:27 pm, Shocker Softball vs. #8/#6 Oklahoma State in Stillwater at 5:00 pm and Shocker Volleyball facing Kansas in Koch Arena at 6:00 pm.

Live stats will have to do for softball and volleyball. Both those contests are on ESPN+ so a replay will be available. Not sure that will the case with NCAA basketball game on TBS not to mention the importance of that event. Hope the Shocks do well in all 3 contests but by far the most impactful both financially and otherwise would be a successful outcome for Men's Basketball.

Oops! It finally occurred to me that I did not go back and add stats for the Shocks!

The top three OPS belong to Lolo (1.579 and six homers), Addison (1.570 and eight homers), and Neleigh (1.527 and five homers). Butters and Bailee also have an OPS greater than 1.000.

Bailey (1.26 and 1.00) and Erin (3.69 and 1.22) have most of the starts. Caitlin (1.15 and 1.25) is the arm out of the bullpen.

In the past, LiveStats by Sidearm have used the same window over and over. Depending on the availability of faces at a screen during a game, understanding the flow of that game after the fact may be an issue.

The good thing is that the OSU game is on ESPN+ so I can watch a replay at my convenience. I probably watch more Shocker games/matches on replay that I do live. One advantage of watching the replays is that I can skip through the commercials and breaks in the action and watch the games over a much shorter time frame.

Now if OSU crushes us in a 15-0 run rule I might find it difficult to hit the button on the replay.

              Game One

              Shockers at Oklahoma State

Bailey for the Shockers and Logan Simunek for the Cowgirls are in the respective circles. Camryn is at first for the Shocks. The Shocks have seen Simunek several times before. She has an ERA of 2.29 and a WHIP of 1.37.

In the first with one out, Addison reaches on a three-base by the right fielder and Butters walks. Neleigh singles in one and after a flyout, Baile doubles home another. Camryn knocks two more in with a single and Kaylee follows with a run-scoring single. Five so far if you lost count. Wylie reaches on another error, but no more runs for the Shockers. 5-0 after the top of the first, all runs unearned.

Time to go watch some VB.

The Shockers added two runs in the second and solo shots by Butters in the fifth and Jessica Garcia in the seventh. There were four errors by Oklahoma State with only three of the Shocker runs earned. The Cowgirl runs came on a two-run homer in the fourth. Bailey gave up two walks in addition to the six hits and had three strikeouts.

                    Watched the replay:

Like the Cowgirls,v the OSU announcers didn't exactly have a stellar day either.

In the first inning the PBP man announced Shocker freshman Addison Barnard as out of New England. Addison is from Beatrice, NE (Nebraska).

Addison was followed by Madison "Butters" Perrigan. The color commentator explained her nickname came from her Dad who called her Butters because she had butterfingers playing ball when she was little. While that mades semse, the story doesn't square at all with the story Madison herself tells about where the nickname came from.

The PBP guy came also mentioned that Butters was the AAC career leader in home runs, RBI's and doubles and the same for WSU (I don't think she is the career leader in doubles). 4 batters later the PBP guy introduced Kaylee Huecker as the Shockers all-time home run and RBI leader which I'm sure was a surprise to the light hitting Shocker second baseman batting 8th in the order. It was on the screen graphics as well.

                    Now to the game:

The 1-out 3 base error on the OSU rightfielder opened the gates for the Shocks. No doubt the wind made that a tougher play than it otherwise would have been but it definitely should have been caught. But still the Shocks took full/ advantage of the opportunity. A semi-intentional (?) walke to Butters. Neliegh pulled a 1-2 pitch that was probably a little below the strike zone on the outside part of the plate into right for an RBI single. Ryleigh blooped a pop to left that the wind knocked down but the OSU leftfield made a nice shoe string catch for out #2 and keeping the runners at 1st and 2nd while giving the Cowgirls a chance to escape with only 1 run having scored. Bailee Nickerson lined a pitch at the knees into the left field corner scoring Butters and moving Neleigh to 3rd with Bailee cruising into 2nd. That ball was very well struck. Shocks up 2-0. Cam Compton blooped a single to right center that scored both Neleigh and Bailee with Cam going all the way to 3rd when the throw home got away from the catcher. The throw was high and probably should have been the 2nd error of the inning on the OSU right fielder but it was not scored an error. Kaylee followed with a seeing eye single into centerfield on another pitch down in the zone that was probably a ball to drive in Cam and make it 5-0. Wyllie Glover extended the inning when she slapped a 1-2 pitch that was mishandled by the OSU 3rd baseman for another error before Sydney grounded to short for a 6-4 force out at 2nd for her 2nd out of the inning.

Bailey Lange gave up a 1 out walk in the bottom of 1st and then got a 4-6 fielders choice force at 2nd although the replay looked like the runner may have beat or tied the throw. However, the next batter hit a two hopper that the Shocker shortstop, Sydney, fielded right on top of the bag so if the runner had been called safe that probably would have been an easy double play.

Addison led of the Shocker 2nd with a hard one-hopper that handcuffed the OSU shortstop who was unable to make the play. It was scored an error but it was a very tough play. A hard it ball, a step to her left that she to had to take on one very short hop. I probably would have scored that as a hit. Butters followed with a frozen rope to left center that made it to the wall scoring Addison from 1st as Butters pulled into 2nd standing up. That knocked the OSU starter, Logan Simunek out of the game. 3 batters later Bailee Nickerson lined a sharp single to center scoring Butters to make it 7-0. Bailee looked really good in her 1st two at bats.

Ryleigh Buck with a stellar back hand grab on sharply hit ball near the line and nice strong throw across the diamond to end the OSU at bat in the bottom of the 2nd.

The Shockers loaded the bases on 3 walks in the top of the 3rd with 2 outs but Ryleigh struck out for the 2nd time against the OSU reliever, Mattison Boyd and looked bad doing it. In her first 2 innings of work Boyd has walked 4 and struck out 4 and does have some good movement on her pitches and an unusual delivery.

A 1-out single to center in the bottom of the 3rd is the Cowgirls first hit of the game. That was erased when a soft liner to second baseman Kaylee Huecker resulted in a double play as Kaylee got ride of the ball very quickly with some pace on it to catch the runner off of first. Very nice play to end the inning.

BaileyL lost the shut out in the bottom of the 4th giving up a 1 out single up the middle and a 2-run home on a drive into the wind to left by the OSU's right fielder (who showed why she is in the game despite some shaky moments in the field) which was very well hit as it was easily out of the park into a pretty stiff wind.

OSU's 3rd pitcher of the game is on to start the 5 inning. With 1 out OSU got the benefit of a call IMO when Addison pulled a bouncer down the third base line. The OSU 3rd baseman made a nice play and Addison did look to be out on a close play. However, replays showed the OSU 1st baseman's foot was off the bag as Addison crossed the bag. Butters followed driving a mid-thigh pitch on the outer half of the plate well over the right field wall. Making it 8-2. That is one thing I think Addison Barnard needs to learn. How to hit the ball where it's pitched. At this point she appears to pretty much be a dead pull hitter.

In the bottom of the 5th Bailey issued a 2-out 4 pitch walk followed by a drive to the wall in right center that Bailee made a fantastic catch running full speed and catching the ball just as she and the ball arrived at the fence. Her glove and ball hit the fence about a foot below the top of the fence. Saved a run for sure.

In the bottom of the 6th OSU got a 2-out double down the right field line with the OSU power hitting right fielder coming to the plate but BaileyL retired her on a 1 hopper back to the mound.

HCKB pinch hit 5-4 freshman Jessica Garcia for Kaylee leading off the 7th. Jessica, who has surprising power, responded with a "I know its gone bat flip homer" to centerfield. The OSU centerfielder took 2 steps and then watched it sail over the fence. Shocks extend the lead to 9-2. Jessica does remind me of Paige Luellen at the plate.

In the bottom of the 7th back-to-back singles to left put OSU runners at 1st and 2nd. But the game was over after 3 ground balls with runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd. Kaylee made a very nice play on a bouncer up the middle for the final out. Easy to see why Kaylee plays despite not being the strongest hitter. She is a very slick fielder at 2nd base with a shortstop quality arm.

Really nice game by the Shocks in all 3 phases. Hope they can keep that up.

My player of the game is Bailee Nickerson was 2-4 with 2 RBI and her inning ending catch in the 5th was the play of the game. Maybe co-player. Bailey's work in the circle holding this team to 2 runs was pretty impressive as well. BaileyL is a not over-powering but she is a pitcher in the truest sense of the word.

Jessica Garcia swings the bat with bad intentions. She does not get cheated and that bomb to center in the 7th was a no doubter.

Here is Bailee Nickerson's 5th inning web gem to end the inning and save a run.

Indeed it was. Here is a video clip of that swing:

I don't think we got OSU's best pitching tonight but I expect we will see one of both of them on Saturday. Although the pitchers we did see in this game were decent pitchers. But they were probably the 3rd, 4rh and 5th options for the Cowgirls.

If we win two from OSU his weekend the Shocks wil not doubt have to do it he hard way.
