Not much positive to note. Katherine pitched a scoreless fourth? That's about the best I can do. Sammie got a single in the fourth and Sydney Stuever, a freshman from Andale, a single in the fifth for our only hits.

The game against Baylor follows. Although this is Baylor's first game of the day and Whitney Canion is their stud, they also play Iowa after the game with us, so I would expect to see someone other than Whitney in the circle for the Bears.

My positive spin was going to be that the Shocks only struck out once.

An inauspicious start to the Coach B era to say the least. Hopefully, she will be able to look back on this game a couple of years down the road and remark how how far the program has come from this point.

We knew coming in that we were somewhat pitching-challenged. Certainly nothing to change that perception yet, although it is only one game. Not sure how good a team Iowa has. They didn't exactly tear the cover off the ball with 6 singles and 2 doubles. However, when you sprinkle in 10 walks, a hit batter and 3 errors that becomes a pretty potent run-scoring offense.

Still when you go scoreless and only get 2 singles in 5 innings you're not going to win many games even with strong pitching. This team will have to score some runs and play good defense to have chance because it is unlikely our pitching will totally shut down very many opponents.

So while the Shocks only had one strikeout on the day, the overall performance of the team was pretty much a strikeout.

With Baylor up next, the bounce back may have to wait until tomorrow. But we'll see what kind of effort the Lady Shocks can bring against the Lady Bears.

I thought of that one, but I was not sure if the Iowa pitcher was a power pitcher (and did not bother to try to look it up :( ). Last year, she struck out 120 in 170 innings, so I would agree the one strikeout is a positive.

Not sure how good a team Iowa has.

And their coach (a long-time assistant at Texas - her second year at Iowa) may not know either. :(

Half of them were in the 1st inning. Without all the freebies maybe you could hold them to 3 or 4 runs instead of 11. Of course, who knows how many of the walks would have turned into hits if you were throwing it in the strike zone.

Sloan does get the start for the Shocks and Courtney Repka, the Baylor #2, for the Bears. Danika Miller is the only different bat in the lineup for us, replacing Brittney Osborn. According to the audio, Sloan is a tall right-hander from Hillsboro, Oklahoma. That was enough for me.

Perhaps the highlight of the day with Sloan getting 3 up and 3 down in the 2nd against Baylor. Ok, so the 3rd out was at 3rd base with the Baylor player attempting to stretch a double into a triple. At least the Shocks made the play.

Counts for me! And a scoreless (two-hit) third inning by Sloan. Maybe she switched back to pitching left-handed these last two innings. She has given up six hits over three innings, but no walks. Makes a world of difference.

8 hits over 4 innings by Baylor but only 3 runs (2 unearned due to 2 Shocker errors). Same number of hits as Iowa had over 4 innings but as you noted -- now walks or hit batters. Should be an easy comparison Coach B can show Katie and Katherine as a teaching tool.

Shocks 1-5 Baylor

A solid outing by Sloan (three earned runs, eleven hits, but no freebies) but still no offense or defense. Melanie Jaegers, a freshman from Mesquite (DFW), did get two of the Shocker's four hits including a double. But she was also thrown out twice running the bases. The Shocker run in the sixth was unearned, scoring after a bad throw on a steal.

UT-Arlington and Belmont are the opponents tomorrow, but because these games are being played off campus, we will see only box scores (eventually) and the play-by-play associated with them.

Shocks fall to #7 Baylor 5-1. Sloan gave up a lot of hits (11) but did not hand out any free passes and at least made Baylor work a little for the runs. 2 of Baylor's runs were unearned.

But again this Shocker team will probably not win many games without scoring a handful of runs. Considering we lost our two best and most consistent hitters from last year, Heather Gerritse and Jamie Hull, scoring runs may be a challenge for this relatively young team.

Still a much better performance than in the 1st game especially considering the quality of competition.

Tomorrow should be a little easier.

Shocks 1-6 UT-Arlington

The box score for the first game of the day is up, but there is no play-by-play with it. Katherine started this one and lasted seven batters, facing one in the second (which means she left the bases loaded in the scoreless first). She gave up one hit and three walks before the hook, throwing only six strikes in twenty pitches. KA finished up and took the loss, as the Shocks scored one in the top of the second and the Mavericks scored three in the bottom half with only the first of those belonging to KJ. In KA's five innings, she gave up eight hits, three walks and four earned runs. We had the same plate umpire as against Iowa (ten walks in that one), the game yesterday these same two pitchers worked, so maybe they threw to a very tight zone both times.

Offensively, we had five hits, Rachel having two of them, and our run was unearned. Brianne Bond, a freshman from Columbia, MO, was the only new bat, striking out twice in three ABs, as the DP.

The game with Belmont followed this one.

Shocks pick up their 1st win in the Coach B ere with a 7-2 win over Belmont. Sloan pitches a complete game giving up 6 hits but only allowing 1 walk.

This was a very close game with the Shocks only leading 3-2 after 6 innings. A 4 spot in the top of the 7th put it away for the Shocks.

No PBP available so not sure how the Shocks put together the 7th inning rally.

On the hitting side of the Belmont game, Laura Vickers, the transfer from KU had two of our six hits and she and Melanie Jaegers, freshman from Mesquite, had two RBI each. Five of our seven runs were earned. On defense, we made two errors, but both runs Sloan gave up were earned.

We close the tournament with a game against Arkansas, 3-1 thus far on the weekend.
