While the Shocker men have a very busy week with home games on Tuesday (ILS) and Friday (BU) and a road trip Sunday (INS) the Lady Shocks (10-5, 4-0) have the luxury of getting a day off and then focusing on Missouri State who will be visiting Koch Arena this coming Saturday.
Furthermore, the Lady Shocks will not play again until Thursday of next week. So they can really focus in on the Lady Bears and no reason not to leave absolutely everything on the court against the Lady Bears on Saturday. Of course, the Lady Bears are in pretty much the same position. They actually played Saturday so they have one additional day to prepare or rest.
Missouri State (10-4, 3-1) was installed as the solid favorite to win the MVC receiving 36 of 40 1st place votes (UNI received the other 3 votes).
Missouri State also brings the odds on favorite for the MVC POY into Koch Arena in 6'0" Sr. G Casey Garrison. Casey will be a 4-time All-MVC selection and she was POY in 2009-10 and runner-up to UNI's Jacqui Kalin for that award last year, although the Shock's own Haleigh Lankster might give Casey a run for her money this year. However, Casey absolutely stuffs the stat sheet.
Garrison is averaging 18.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 4.6 APG. She is shooting 52.2% from the field (including 21-45 for 46.7% from three) and 84.7% from the line. Not very many, if any, weaknesses in her game and she has an outstanding basketball IQ. Garrison averages 34 minutes per game.
The reigning MVC Player of the Week, 5'9" Sr G Jaleshia Roberson is averaging 12.6 PPG, 3.3 RPG and 3.3 APG. To say she is a 3-point specialist is putting it midly. She has taken 146 shots of which 120 have been 3-point attempts. She has made 46 treys for 35.8%. She gets off 8-10 3-point attempts per game. She also shoots 80.6% from the line. Roberson averages 31 minutes per game.
Roberson averaged 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins over Creighton and Drake last week. She shot 70 percent overall (14-20), 62.5 percent from three (10-16) and 90 percent (9-10) from the foul line with a 3.5:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Roberson’s 47 points for the week came on just 20 field goal attempts, beginning with 25 on 7-of-9 shooting against Creighton. She hit four treys and 7-of-8 free throws against the Bluejays with five rebounds in 39 minutes. Against Drake, Roberson hit six threes and shot 7-for-11 overall, passing somebody named Jackie Stiles on the career three-point list in the process. So Roberson is hot and the Shocks will need to slow her down.
6'1" Jr F Christiana Shorter can match any of the Shocker interior players athletically. She averages 12.9 PPG and 6.8 RPG. Free throw shooting has been a problem for her this year as she is hitting only 50.6% from the line. She shoots 56.2% from the field. Shorter averages 25 minutes per game.
5'11" Sr. G Jasmine Malone chips in 7.9 PPG and 5.2 RPG in her 26 minutes per game.
These 4 players account for 68% of the Bears scoring and 51% of their rebounding.
However, MSU will go 10 deep with 6 other palyers averaging 10 to 17 minutes per game.
MSU is also very experienced with 5 Seniors, 3 Juniors and 2 Sophomores among their top 10 players.
I don't think I can call this a must win this early in the season, but it is a huge opportunity for the Shocks and it will be anything but easy. Hopefully, the return match in Springfield on February 10th with be a HUGE game. Still this is a very significant game for the Lady Shocks. It has been a long time since a game was this meanningful for the Lady Shocks. Hopefully, they are up to the challenge.
I think it would be a huge help to the Lady Shocks to get a big crowd out to Koch Arena. MSU is the Queen of MVC basketball and while their attendance is not want it used to be in the JS era they still drew 3100 for Creighton and 3900 for Drake this past week. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least a couple of busloads of Lady Bear fans making the trip to Wichita for this game. I'm not sure how pretty this game will be, but it should be a battle royale.
Time to jump on the Shocker Express! Chugga, Chugga, Wu Wu!
