  • Shocker SB at Bobcat Classic (Texas State)

The Shockers continue their season in Texas - this time a bit further down I-35 toward San Antonio in San Marcos. Their opponents are Saint Louis and UTSA on Friday at 12pm and 230pm, Texas State and UTSA on Saturday at 230 pm and 715pm and Texas State on Sunday at 12pm.

Saint Louis are a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference where they are a preseason pick for sixth among the ten teams. Gabbie Kowalik was the Rookie of the Year for the A-10 last year with an OPS of .959 and six home runs. Other returning offensive leaders are Sadie Wise (1.123 and seven) and Kat Lane (.856). Returning pitchers, each with about a quarter of the innings last year, are Aubrey Hacke (ERA of 5.41 and WHIP of 2.04) and Kaylea Chapelle(6.07 and 1.93). Chloe Wendling, a freshman, got two starts this past weekend with Hacke being the relief specialist. The Billikens opened their season at Southern Mississippi where they split two games with both USM and Mississippi Valley State.

UTSA are picked for tenth among the twelve teams in Conference USA. Returning offensive threats for the Roadrunners are Bailee Baldwin (OPS of 1.026 and eleven home runs) and Madison Washington (1.014 and eight). They return all three pitchers from last year. Most of the innings belonged to Madison Nelson (ERA of 5.02 and WHIP of 1.38) and Clarissa Hernandez (4.63 and 1.52). UTSA opened their season at the Louisiana Classic where they lost twice to #8 Louisiana and defeated Ball State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Prairie View A&M.

Texas State are a pick for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference, much closer to the third spot than they are to the fifth spot. Louisiana is the unanimous choice to win the conference. Hailey McKay (OPS of .805 and four home runs) and Tara Oltmann (.783 and five) are selections to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. The majority of their innings return in Meagan King (ERA of 2.95 and WHIP of 1.17) and Dalilah Barrera (4.28 and 1.63). The Bobcats spent the weekend in Clearwater at the NCFA Leadoff Classic. They lost to #23 Auburn and #15 Kentucky in close games and defeated Louisville and South Alabama. Although not part of their formal record, Texas State also played the Women's National Team in Clearwater, losing 5-2. The Bobcats will be a formidable opponent.

The Shockers hit well in Austin and almost everyone has an outrageous OPS led by Bailey U at 1.600. These are the ERAs against Texas: Bailey - 4.1 innings and 12.92, Erin - 4.2 innings and 10.50, Caitlin - 1.0 innings and 21.00. The ERAs against the rest of the field: Bailey - 7.1 innings and 3.82, Erin - 7.0 innings and 6.00, and Caitlin - 6.2 innings and 0.00.

Hopefully, the pitching will take a step forward this weekend. The hitters should continue to do well as it doesn't look like these opponents have any shut-down arms in the circle.

As always thanks for the stellar scouting report.

Amazingly, it appears that only the Texas State games will have LiveStats.

                    Saint Louis 2-13(5) Shockers

Erin goes three innings (and walks two to start the fourth) and gives up two solo homers for the Saint Louis runs. Caitlin relieves and pitches two scoreless innings.

Erin gave three hits and four walks and had four strikeouts in her 3.0(f2) innings.

Offensive highlights (via Twitter) are a two-run double by Butters in the first, and a two-run homer by Neleigh in the second (three runs in each inning).

Seven runs in the fourth set up the runs-ahead scenario: a two-RBI double by Neleigh, a run-scoring double by Bailee, a pinch-hit, two-run double by Bailey L, and a two-run homer by Wylie account for the seven runs.

Game Two - Shockers v UTSA

Well, now there are links to all the games at the Bobcat Classic. Unfortunately, the link for this game is a duplicate of the link to the prior UTSA game. Until they get that fixed, Twitter is still the source. I will play with the game IDs-maybe I will stumble across the proper link.

The game has started. They are using the same link.

Erin is the P again and Bailey is the DP, replacing Lauren.

Singles by Sydney and Ryleigh start the game, but they do not advance.

As was done last week, Bailey goes to the circle to start the game. Erin can reenter to pitch if necessary, and Bailey would remain in the batting order.

In the bottom of the first, an infield single, stolen base, another infield single and a ground ball score a run for UTSA.

A single and a walk but no runs in the Shocker second.

Ryleigh singles, Butters walks and Neleigh gets the Shocks on the board with a three-run shot. After walks to Bailey and Bailey, a Roadrunner relief pitcher gets the last two outs. To the bottom of third with the Shockers leading 3-1.

The lead is stretched to 5-1 when in the fourth a single by Butters scores Wylie and a single by Neleigh scores Ryleigh.

Two singles and a hit batter load the bases in the UTSA fourth, but Bailey induces a ground ball double play to end the threat.

Two two-out singles in the Roadrunner fifth, but no runs. Still 5-1 at the end of five.

Singles by Sydney and Ryleigh lead off the Shocker sixth. Butters follows with a three-run home run to run the score to 8-1. Singles by Neleigh, Bailey U and Bailey (a bunt) load the bases, still with no one out. Bailee drives in one run with a single, and Kaylee's groundout drives in another. With two outs, LoLo's pinch-hit double scores two more. 12-1 after five and one-half.

A single and walk start the UTSA sixth. The Shocks get a forceout at second (from Bailey U in right), a tag out at home and a strikeout to end the game by the runs-ahead rule.

                      Shockers 12-1(6) UTSA

Sixteen hits for the Shocks including three hits by Ryleigh and Neleigh (including a homer) and two hits by Sydney, Butters (including a homer) and Bailee. Four RBIs for both Butters and Neleigh and two by LoLo with her double.

Bailey went the full six innings, giving up the one run on seven hits and two walks. She had six strikeouts.

Each Shocker win has been by run-rule.

Game Three - Shockers at Texas State

An early start on this one because the previous game went so quickly.

Yes, Caitlin has the start, and Bailey is the DP.

McCann is the starter for Texas State. She has the fewest innings but the best stats in the early season.

Sydney leads off the first with a double, but no one can advance her.

Single, sac bunt, two-out single and the Bobcats are on the board. 0-1 after one.

Bailey U singles to lead off the second and later steals second, but again, no one can get her across. Two left on base in scoring position.

Caitlin gives up another leadoff single, but this runner does not score. 0-1 after two.

In the third, a one-out error and a two-out infield single by Butters moves Sydney into scoring position, but Neleigh flys out.

In the bottom half, a single, stolen base and throwing error on the steal puts a Bobcat at third with no outs. From there, she scores on a sac fly. 0-2 after three complete.

Two walks but no runs in the Texas State fourth. Still 0-2.

In the fifth, another three-up, three-down inning for the Shocks.

A double and a wild pitch that somehow scores the runner from second gives the Bobcat another run. 0-3 after five.

Ryleigh leads off with an infield single, and Neleigh moves her to third with a double. Bailey U walks on four pitches to load the bases with one out. LoLo pinch-hits for Bailey, and Texas State changes pitchers. LoLo stikes out, but Bailee draws a walk to score one. Adi pinch-hits for Kaylee and also walks to score another. The starting pitcher returns for the Bobcats. No matter - Wylie walks on four pitches to tie the game. Sydney flies out to end the inning, but the Shocks benefit from four walks and tie the game. 3-3.

Bailey comes on to start the bottom of the sixth. The tie does not last long as Texas State hits a leadoff homer on an 0-2 pitch. A single and a one-out single to put runners at the corners is followed by a double steal to score another run. On to the seventh with the score at 3-5.

Butters has a one-out double in the seventh. Two strikeouts follow and the Bobcats win 5-3.

                          Shockers 3-5 Texas State

Just not quite enough hitting or pitching. The Shocks had six hits with a double and single by Butters leading the way. All of the RBI were via walks, however. In her five innings, Caitlin gave up two earned runs (ignore the Live Stats, the third inning run was scored incorrectly) on five hits and two walks. Bailey had a rough sixth inning (three hits including the homer) to take the loss.

The Shocks had done very little against Texas State's Tori McCann trailing 3-0 after 5 runs.

In the top of the 6th a Ryleigh infield single, a fly out by Butters, a double by Neleigh and walk to Bailey Urban loaded the bases with 1-out. Dalilah Barrera came on in relief of McCann and struck out Lauren Mills who was pinch hitting for Bailey Lange. Barrera then walked the next 3 Shockers forcing in 3 runs to tie the game. Sydney McKInney flied out to left filed to end the inning.

The Shockers replace Caitlyn with Bailey L. in the bottom of the 6th. After getting ahead in the count 0-2 to the lead off hitter Bailey gives up a home run. 2 singles put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out and the Bobcats successfully executed a double steal to move the lead back to 5-3.

Shocks coming up for their final at bat needing to 2 to tie and 3 to take the lead. Ryleigh Buck, in the 2-hole, leading off.

Butters delivers a 1-out double to get the tying run to the plate for the Shocks. But Neleigh and Bailey Urban both strike out to end the game.

                              Final: Bobcats 5 - Shockers 3
