The Shockers continue their season in Texas - this time a bit further down I-35 toward San Antonio in San Marcos. Their opponents are Saint Louis and UTSA on Friday at 12pm and 230pm, Texas State and UTSA on Saturday at 230 pm and 715pm and Texas State on Sunday at 12pm.
Saint Louis are a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference where they are a preseason pick for sixth among the ten teams. Gabbie Kowalik was the Rookie of the Year for the A-10 last year with an OPS of .959 and six home runs. Other returning offensive leaders are Sadie Wise (1.123 and seven) and Kat Lane (.856). Returning pitchers, each with about a quarter of the innings last year, are Aubrey Hacke (ERA of 5.41 and WHIP of 2.04) and Kaylea Chapelle(6.07 and 1.93). Chloe Wendling, a freshman, got two starts this past weekend with Hacke being the relief specialist. The Billikens opened their season at Southern Mississippi where they split two games with both USM and Mississippi Valley State.
UTSA are picked for tenth among the twelve teams in Conference USA. Returning offensive threats for the Roadrunners are Bailee Baldwin (OPS of 1.026 and eleven home runs) and Madison Washington (1.014 and eight). They return all three pitchers from last year. Most of the innings belonged to Madison Nelson (ERA of 5.02 and WHIP of 1.38) and Clarissa Hernandez (4.63 and 1.52). UTSA opened their season at the Louisiana Classic where they lost twice to #8 Louisiana and defeated Ball State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Prairie View A&M.
Texas State are a pick for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference, much closer to the third spot than they are to the fifth spot. Louisiana is the unanimous choice to win the conference. Hailey McKay (OPS of .805 and four home runs) and Tara Oltmann (.783 and five) are selections to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. The majority of their innings return in Meagan King (ERA of 2.95 and WHIP of 1.17) and Dalilah Barrera (4.28 and 1.63). The Bobcats spent the weekend in Clearwater at the NCFA Leadoff Classic. They lost to #23 Auburn and #15 Kentucky in close games and defeated Louisville and South Alabama. Although not part of their formal record, Texas State also played the Women's National Team in Clearwater, losing 5-2. The Bobcats will be a formidable opponent.
