The female referee that worked the Shocker-USF game last night is working the UConn-Tennesse game tonight. I assume getting a game of that caliber means she is well regarded among the AAC referees. A quick Google search indicates she is from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I have yet to recognize an AAC referee that worked also worked our Valley games and have not decided if that is a good thing or bad thing.

Both teams shot similar percentages so I guess the only explanation for how the Shocks got this game to overtime was that they out-rebounded Houston 53-28 including 21-9 on the offensive boards. In fact, the Shocks actually had a 7 point lead with about 6 minutes to play in regulation. From that point on Houston outscored the Shocks 21-6.

The Lady Shocks continue to turn it over at a high rate and fall 44-64 at SMU.
After turning it over 38 times at Houston the Shocks turned it over 30 times tonight.
That is certainly not a recipe for success for an offensively challenged team, especially when their leading scorer was not available. Mariah was back in Wichita under concussion protocol.

These games are getting harder and harder to watch! I start watching the games and end up searching for another women's game that will be far more entertaining and display a solid set of basketball skills then that of the WSU women. 68 turnovers in the last two games...yikes! Less than 25 points at halftime of the last two games...yikes. Just not good basketball!

The Shocks trail ECU (4-16, 1-6) at home at the end of the 1st quarter 6-13. The score pretty much reflect how the Shocks have played.
The Shocks are dealing with injuries. Mariah McCully. Trajata Colbert, Ashlei Kirven, Jaida Hanpton and Natalia Ryng all out with injuries.
OTOH, ECU only goes about 8 deep so available depth is comparable.
Shocks get it back to a tie at the half 23-all. Outscoring ECU 11-1 at the free throw line.
The Shocks pulled ahead by 7 points with 3:00 minutes in the game at 51-44 but ECU hit 4 consecutive shots, including 2 treys, and forged ahead at 55-54 with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Seraphine Bastin found DJ McCarty open in the right corner on the ensuing Shocker possession and DJ knocked down a 3 pointer with 11.6 seconds to play to put the Shocks up 57-55. ECU got off a guarded, off-balance three at the buzzer but missed and the Shockers escape with a win that breaks a 3-game losing streak.
Asia Henderson had a career high 11 points including some key baskets and free throws in the 4th quarter. DJ played her best game since returning from her ankle injury but may have tweaked the ankle a bit again in this game but she played through it. Seraphine lead the Shocks on the boards with 9.
The Shocks won this game at the free throw line hitting 21-30 vs 4-10 for ECU although I don't think you could say ECU did not get a fair whistle. They press the entire game and are a very aggressive team.
The Shocks had 17 turnovers which is a major improvement over the past 2 games and pretty good against an aggressive, pressing team like ECU that forces a lot of turnovers.
Not a pretty game but a badly needed win for the Shocks.

I'll give DJ McCarty the Play of the Game and the Runner-Up Play of the Game. The POG of course being her game winner 3-pointer from the right corner. The runner up came with 1:26 remaining in the 3rd quarter and the Shocks down 33-38. DJ in-bounded the ball from under the Shocker basket. ECU chose not to guard DJ and she bounced the ball off the butt of an ECU player who had her backed turn about 6 feet off the baseline back to herself and laid it in. I don't think Shane or his color commentator even realized what had happened.
So on the latter play does DJ get an assist and a basket?

The Lady Shocks picked up a nice win on the road tonight with an 85-75 win over Temple despite being short-handed again as the Shockers shot lights-out tonight, something that has not been very common for this team this year. Temple's style apparently is to the Shocks liking as the Shocks beat Temple 72-70 in Wichita.
The Shocks put 5 players in double figures -- Maya Brewer with perhaps her finest game as a Shocker with 19 points including 5-6 on treys in only 15 minutes, Ashley Reid with 15 including 5-7 on treys, DJ McCarty with 14 including 3-5 on treys, Seraphine Bastin with 13 plus 8 assists vs only 1 turnover and Asia Henderson who was 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the line in only 13 minutes.
Overall the Shockers shot 31-61 (50.8%) from the field including a very uncharacteristic 15-27 (55.6%) on treys. This was with Carla Bremaud and Vendela Danielsson, allegedly our 3-point specialists combining to go 0-5 on treys.
Temple was 5-3 and tied for 3rd in AAC play coming into this game so this is nice win for the Shocks. The Shocks had 21 assists on 31 baskets which is much better than normal for this team. Helps when teammates are knocking down shots but still this is very good. Perhaps this group is figuring out the joys of sharing the ball finally.
A 0.500 finish in AAC play is definitely in play now for the Lady Shocks with 6 games to play.

The Shocks were down at the end of the 1st quarter 23-15. The Shocks weren't terrible. Temple played well that quarter.
The Shocks got it going in the 2nd quarter behind 13 points from Maya winning the quarter 24-9 to forge a 39-32 halftime lead.
A high scoring 3rd quarter has the Shocks extending their lead to 66-56 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The 4th quarter was kind of back and forth. The Shocks stretched the lead to 15 at 74-59 early in the quarter. Temple closed the margin to 7 points at 75-68 with possession with 5 minutes to play as the Shocks took a series of poor, forced shot on several possessions and an all too common traveling call. Maya came in a knocked down a couple of treys and Ashley added 1 more and the Shocks were back up 84-68 with 2:.30 to play. Shocks got a bit sloppy late but had plenty of cushion to finish off an 85-75 win for only their 3rd road win of the season.
Maya's 19 points was a career high and the 15 treys made by the Shocks set a new school record. You always look much better when you are making shots but the Shocks did a good job kicking finding the open teammates on the perimeter. The Shocks only had 15 turnovers but it seems like at least 10 of those were traveling calls and many of those on the Shocker front court players.
All-in-all though a very nice conference road win for the Shocks

I did not see the Lady Shocks home game with Memphis tonight but the Tigers game into Koch Arena at 3-7 on the year in AAC play vs 5-5 for the Lady Shocks plus only had 7 available players. In addition, Mariah Cully and Trajata Colbert returned to action for the Lady Shocks. So seemingly this was a great opportunity for the Lady Shocks to pick up a win. Unfortunately that did not happen as Memphis leaves town with a 69-60 win.
After probably their best offensive performance of the year in last week's win at Temple including a school record 15-27 performance on three pointers their was perhaps some hope that the Shocks had found something. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case as the morphed back into the poor shooting team they have generally been for most of the season as they shot only 33.8% from the field against Memphis including 4-22 (18.2%) from beyond the arc. They only had 5 assist on 22 made baskets and 65 shots taken while the turned it over 15 times, which actually for them is not terrible. Basically Memphis just shot the ball better than the Shocks.
In her return Mariah McCully led the Shocks with 17 points but as pretty normal for she takes a lot of shots to get their. She was 4-16 (0-7) from the field and 9-13 from the line. She is just not very efficient I stilI question whether she adds to her teams performance or detracts although I generally like the skill set she brings to the game. She did grab 7 rebounds from her guard position to tie for team high so the effort is there. She just needs to refine her game to use her talents to make her teammates and her team better and not just pad her stats. OTOH hand she may very well doing exactly what the coaches want her to do.
Shyia Smith actually had a fairly efficient offensive game scoring 13 points on 6-8 from the field plus 1-1 plus she grabbed 6 rebounds in her 25 minutes.
In a somewhat unexpected twist Maya Brewer who scored a career high 19 points including 5-6 from the field in only 15 minutes against Temple only played 4 minutes against Memphis and did not score as she missed her only shot. I don't know if Maya may have been injured in the game to account for this or not.
This loss was a big blow to the Shocks hopes of finishing at 0.500 in AAC play.
