  • Lady Shocks v Missouri State

The Shocks host Missouri State for a DH on Wednesday. The Bears are 8-6 in the Valley and were a preseason pick for 5/6 with Creighton.

Much improved pitching has been the key to the recent success of the Shocks, especially Katie. As '72 has written, a sweep would be a big step toward the Shocks finishing in the top half of the Valley.

After struggling to a 9-22 (2-7 MVC) start the Lady Shocks have all of a sudden won 5 of their last 6 games including handing Drake it's only MVC loss of the season in 14 games with an unbelievable late rally, a 3-game sweep of Creighton who were 4 games up on the Shocks coming into the series and then knocking off #18 Okie State last night by a 4-2 score after being run-ruled (10-1) in 5 innings by the Cowgirls earlier in the year.

The Shocks have all of a sudden positioned themselves to possibly finish in the top half of the league with their remaining schedule. Something that would have seemed unthinkable 10 days ago.

Hopefully, the Ladies can continue their very solid play and finish strong.

Shocks trail late 4-2. Sloan has kept it as close as she can since coming into the game, but 2 in the first and 2 more in the 2nd and the Shocks have been on their heels all game long.

The modest winning streak is in jeopardy.

Lady Shocks fall to the Lady Bears 5-3 in Game 1.

Katie started but gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 1.1 innings. Sloan picked her up with a nice 5.2 innings of relief allowing only 1 more run.

Shocks had some chances and did get the tying run to the place in the 7th but were unable to come up with the big hit.

Shocks need to come back and take Game 2.

I had a chance to see some of the first game. Some poor decisions (checking a runner at second leading to a late throw to first, throwing to the wrong base from the outfield) hurt in the first two innings.

The Bears' catcher must have the yips. She trotted toward the circle and underhanded the ball to the pitcher. Her throws to second were fine, but not back to the pitcher apparently. So on between-innings warm-up pitches, another catcher took the first four and the starting catcher came out to take the last one and make the throw to second. Unbelievable!

Now that is something you don't see everyday (if ever)!

              Scoreless, bottom 4.

Shocks get the first 2 on and Sammie sacrifices them into scoring position.

Must get 1 home, and really need 2 to be in a decent position for a split, which wouldn't be all bad.

Lady Bears walk freshman Rachel Milnark to get to freshman Erin Carney.

Carney makes them look good by hitting into a fielders choice, P to C.

Bases still loaded for Brittney Osborn.

                Big at bat here.

Brittney gets the job done, singling to get 1 home.

Freshman Danika Miller has a chance to blow the game wide open now.

Going to have to make that 1 stand up.

Bre takes the mound in the 5th, Shocks lead 1-0.

Bears get 2 in the top of the 7th and make it hold up.

SWOMO sweeps the twin bill. :(

That one hurts. Sounds like we had our chances just couldn't find the key hit.

Breezy with one of her better outings of the year but, unfortunately, she does not get rewarded.

                        :(

QP, I am not going to research this :) but I sense that Sloan is a far better reliever than starter at this point in her career. But it also seems she is not particularly effective when she relieves twice in the same DH. (No, Missouri State ... yes, Creighton ... no, ? ... like I said, I'm not looking it up now.) Making the adjustment from KA/Breezy and their styles to Sloan and her style is easier the second time? Who knows?

Breezy is rolling along to the sixth, one out, one single, one out, and then Sloan is on. Perhaps there were other factors in the decision.

And, of course, only scoring one run doesn't help.

I wondered the same thing the other day with Katie Moose, through 3 giving up only one hit and change made. Whatever however, nice to see them "competing"

In the OSU game, I thought it was just a matter of everyone pitching no matter what since there were five conference games, the important games of the week, in the four days following.
