  • Shocker Women's Outdoor Track Thread

The Shockers will open up their outdoor season this week with a few athletes going to 2 different meets. Although it may seem low-key in nature there is one VERY significant race for 2 Lady Shocks.

Indoor 5k all-Americans Aliphine Tuliamuk and Tonya Nero will race the 10k at Stanford Friday night around 11pm Central Time. This is the meet last year that Nero ran a blazing race in the mid 33 minute range and both her and Aliphine appear to be much better than that this year. Not sure too many people realize how incredible a couple of 32 minute 10k's would be but it would be AMAZING! You can watch the race live on Flotrack.com Friday night. I'm sure they will be in the fast heat with many professional runners and all the top collegians.

There will also be a few other Lady Shocks at Stanford but I'm not 100% sure who. Also the multi-eventers will open up their season with a heptathlon at Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas on Thursday and Friday.

The rest of the team will open up at home the following Saturday, April 2, in a scored meet against Big 12 champs Nebraska and UNI at Cessna Stadium. What a great meet to start off the outdoor season!

Good luck to the Lady Shockers this week, hopefully it will be as successful an outdoor season as it was indoor!!!

Shocker Ladies do exceedingly well in the Stanford 10K with Tonya finishing 2nd and Aliphine 9th. Loyola Marymount's Tara Erdmann won with a time of 33:10.15.

Nero, the Shocker record holder in the 10,000-meter run thanks to her effort last year at the Stanford Invitational, used the perfect weather conditions that are typical for the Palo Alto, Calif., area to her advantage as she clocked in at 33:11.71. Nero ran a 33.32.84 last season and tonight's time gives her three new records that she can add to her growing trophy case. Nero, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, now holds her home countries best mark in the event, the Missouri Valley Conference's top mark and the Wichita State school record.

Aliphine Tuliamuk, who now sits ninth in the country, also ran a record breaking time as the Iowa State transfer clocked in at 33:27.05, a new personal best mark that puts her second in school history. Scarla Nero followed in her sisters footsteps and put up a personal best of her own, running a 35:34.68. Leah Thompson was in with a 36:38.69.

The fact that Tonya was only 1.5 second behind the winner and Aliphine's 9th place effort was only 17 seconds behind he winner gives an indication of what a great field of runners this was.

Senior Rachel York ran in the third section of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. York, who ranks in the top-10 in school history in the event, ran a 10:51.24 to finish eighth overall out of 18 competitors.

In San Angelo, Texas Tanya Friesen blew past her previous best in the heptathlon, tallying 5,112 points.

Friesen, who set personal bests in all four events she competed yesterday, notched another PR during day two this time in the javelin where she had a top distance of 121' 9", placing second in the event. Friesen leaped 18' 3" in the long jump and then finished out the competition with an 800-meter run of 2:31.24, also a personal record. Her point total (5,112 pts.) places her third in the nation heading into this weekends meets.

Sarah Gilbert finished fourth in the javelin competition (120' 6") and was the fifth place finisher overall with 4,622 points. Gilbert, who totaled 2,807 points after day one, long jumped 17' 2.75" and then followed that with her solid performance in the javelin. Gilbert finished out the competition with a run of 2:39.20 in the 800-meter run and now sits 10th overall in the Shocker record books.

Witney Sorell finished one point behind Gilbert in sixth place (4,621 points) while registering a time of 2:33.53 in the 800-meter run. Jamie Pruter was eighth with 4,273 points.

Shocker ladies looking very solid indeed. The depth of our multi-event athletes continues to be a great strength of our program.

        Thanks for the update '72!

Tremendous efforts by Tonya Nero and Aliphine Tuliamuk at Stanford. We know they would be better at 10k than they were at 5k and this proves it. That will be the best 10k race of the year until the NCAA finals in June so Tonya's performance was extra special. She was gaining on the leader at the end and came up just short of the victory! I'm confident that time will probably hold up as the #2 NCAA time for quite a while. I think those 2 will probably take next weekend's home meet off to recover from this race and then get back to training for the rest of the outdoor season.

Thanks for mentioning Tanya Friesen's heptathlon as well. That's a big score for the sophomore and puts her into contention with the top of the MVC. The top girls are all NCAA qualifying level girls (both UNI and SIU had a girl at NCAA's in the indoor pentathlon) so that's quite an accomplishment.

        Nice job ladies!!!

You look up and down the T&F rosters, for both the men and women, and the Shocks are more than just little represented by local and Kansas athletes. Wish Suellentrop or Lutz or someone at the Eagle would take notice of this program and at least throw a little love their way.
They certainly deserve it. Maby when the MVC outdoor chamipionships roll around they will get a little press.

The Shockers have a very good season opener at home Saturday in front of a nice crowd at Cessna Stadium. WSU easily defeated UNI but lost to the Big 12 champs Nebraska.

                    Some highlights...
--As featured in the Wichita Eagle, Audacia Moore ran the first 400 of her career, winning in 54.73 - a very impressive race. She then came back to place 2nd with a fast 23.88 in the 200m. She also ran a leg on the 4x100 relay that won in 46.23 - all great times for the first meet of the season.
--Shamoya Pruitt took advantage of Moore not running the 100m and blazed to victory in 11.79 as well as running on the 4x1. Fellow sprinter and freshman Monaye Williams ran a 24.75 200m.
--Freshman J'Lynn Ledesma beat some good jumpers from Nebraska to win the high jump at around 5-8.
--The windy condititions hampered the distance races but Danielle Walker's 1500m sit-and-kick win was impressive.
--Natalie Morerod only finished 3rd in the 400 hurdles but a 62.31 effort in her first one ever was very good.
--Tanya Friesen, WSU's top multi-eventer ran an impressive 13.96 in the 100 hurdles - huge pr!
--Kelsey Kamm and Andrea Markel had solid javelin throws, both around 125 ft.
--A few top athletes didn't compete for various reasons (Nero, Brown, Tuliamuk).

This week the Shockers will head to Sacramento State for the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge on Friday and Saturday. Nice way to start the season opener!

The Lady Shocks will take their crew to Sacramento State this weekend for the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge (don't tell Coach Marshall!). They will be competing against:

                      Sacramento State
                      Central Michigan
                      Utah State
                      Fresno State
                      Portland State
                      Montana
                      UC Davis
                      Nevada-Reno

Looks like it will be a pretty good meet and the whole team will be competing including Tonya Nero and Aliphine Tuliamuk in the 1500m, heat sheets are here: http://www.hornetsports.com/assets/s...MeetProg11.htm

                      Good luck Shocks!

74, what's the plan for these 2 great distance runners going forward?

More directly, why the 1500? Is it simply to develop a particular part of their style, ie building speed?

Or is it to prepare for multiple events at the MVC meet?

I am just wondering because it looks to me as if the ladies are in awfully strong shape to take the meet, as long as they don't get a bunch of injuries or some disaster happens.

And if that's a correct assessment, then why have them run the 1500 this weekend if they aren't needed for the meet?

I am not questioning the decision mind you, just curious what the thought process is on building both the athlete and at the same time, building the team.

Thanks as always for your analysis!

                          WuDrWu,

Great questions! One thing is that this meet isn't going to be scored (unfortunately). I know Coach Rainbolt was hoping it would be scored but it looks like it will mostly be an individual-oriented type of meet. But I do agree I think the Shockers could, and would, win this meet.

As for Tonya and Aliphine, running the longer 5k and 10k's every week is very tough on a distance runner so the 1500m is basically some speed work. I think Tonya and Aliphine will both run 5k's next weekend. So your comments as to building speed or preparing for the MVC are both correct.

Beyond the next 2 weeks, those 2 will probably be pretty low-key for the Kansas Relays and then run a couple of races at WSU's BCS Buster meet. That is 2 weeks before the MVC, which they will run multiple races to help WSU win the team title, which is 2 weeks before the 1st round of the NCAA's. I know Tonya is focused for the 10k for the NCAA Championships (ranked #2 in the nation still). I think Aliphine might lean towards the 5k or possibly run both at that level if she makes it. Talking to her is pretty cool because she just wants to run and compete in as many big races as possible. That was obvious when she took the lead at the NCAA Indoor even though the race plan didn't turn out according to how she wanted.

A lot of very good results out in Sacramento this past weekend for the Lady Shockers ...

Tonya Nero blitzed the field (including teammate Aliphine Tuliamuk) in the 1500m, registering a 4:22. That's worth around 4:40 for the mile!
Audacia Moore ran her first 100m of the year and PR'ed in 11.64.
Tish Brown jumped 20 ft from a short approach to win the LJ.

Many more good results but I'm too short on time to run through them all. The Shocks are HOME this weekend as they host the KT Woodman Friday and Saturday. They are also having a heptathlon Wednesday and Thursday in Cessna Stadium. Come check it out!!!

Sounds like the Shockers had another very good peformance hosting the KT Woodman meet. Very good report by Coach 'Bolt and write up at goShockers.com:

WICHITA -- The 62nd annual K.T. Woodman Classic showcased the a talented Wichita State University track and field program as the Shockers recorded 13 individual champions following the final day of competition on Saturday, April 16.

Royal's gal Tonya Friesen had a great heptaphlon on Wednesday and Thursday where she set a PR with 5,343 points which also slots her at 11th nationally.

Audacia Moore her usual adacious self as was Tonya Nero and sister Scarla.

A lot of very good performances including many by native Kansans who are prominently represented on the team.
