WICHITA, Kan. ? The Wichita State volleyball team is ranked 18th in the AVCA Preseason Poll, which was released Aug. 18. It is the highest preseason ranking for the Shockers in the AVCA poll in school history.

About what you would expect. The main difficulty the Shocks will have in moving up is that they do not play anyone ranked above them and so will have to rely on the teams above them losing to teams ranked close to or below the Shocks.

OTOH, based on these rankings the Shocks should be the favorite in all of their matches (with the exception of the exhibition vs the Italian National team).

No doubt the road matches at Louisville (the Big East favorite) and at Rice (whose setter is the preseason co-POY and is joined by 3 other teammates on the 12-member preseason All-Conference team) will be plenty tough as will the home match vs OU. All 3 teams received some votes in the polls.

Italy will have an obvious height advantage, as five of the players on the 12-member roster are listed 6-3 or taller, including 6-8 opposite hitter Valentina Diouf. Nevertheless, this will be a great tune-up leading into the MVC Tournament.

Pitt (17-14 in 2008) who is picked to finish in the middle of the 15 team Big East and had a successful spring including a win over K-State, UNC (22-11) who is picked to finish 4th this year in the ACC after finishing as co-champs last year, and So. Carolina (21-9) who is picked 4th in the SEC East will no doubt bring some quality athletes to bear in what should be solid challenges for the Shocks.

Unfortunately, just about any loss will knock the Shocks down in the rankings. Is another perfect regular season too much to ask? It probably is. After all last year was the 1st such season in a team sport in WSU history. Then again, why not set your sights as high as possible. Let's go for it Shocks.

not sure if this has been posted, i've looked a little, but a friend of mine that is still a student says that one of the volleyball players (at least he thought) since she was with a group of players for sure, was on crutches today in the student center, anyone know who that could be?

edit ** i've had to move to Nebraska and haven't been able to follow the team much this summer

Yes. Several people here know who it is.

ADDED: Such information should be announced by the coaching staff.

#5 Stanford down 1-2 against unranked LSU at Notre Dame.

LSU did gets some votes in one of the polls.

Edit: Stanford wins Sets 4 and 5 to come back for a very tough 3-2 win over LSU on a nuetral court.
