  • Shocks vs SIU & E-ville (Senior Night)

Talk about a trap weekend. We have two experienced, middle of the pack MVC teams. Last weekend SIU lost to UNI in 5 sets and E-ville picked up its first win ever with a 3-1 win over UNI.

Either team is capable of ending the Shocks dream of an undefeated season.

Saturday is Senior Night for two special young ladies. Angela Jakubov and Kelly Broussard. Both young ladies have represented Wichita State with quality and class. Kelly is probably one of the five best Libero's in the country and has a shot at All-American honors.

Both Ladies deserve our best wishes and support as their outstanding Shocker careers wind down over the nest few weeks.

    Thank you Angela and Kelly!

    :goshocks:

Hopefully we can get the Chuck a-rockin' and give these ladies the send off they deserve.

What have these 2 fifth-year seniors accomplished during their careers?

Not counting their red-shirt freshman years, although they certainly contributed to that team in practice, they have an overall record going into this weekend of 104 - 16 (0.867).

They are 63 - 4 (0.940) in MVC regular season play including two regular season MVC Championships and are closing in on a possible 3rd Championship this year.

They have not won a MVC Post-Season Tournament which is something I'm sure they would like to take care of this year.

They have made one trip to the NCAA Tournament going 1-1 in last year's Lincoln sub-regional and, of course, who could forget the heartbreak of their freshman year when the team went 28-3 (18-0) and were unfairly snubbed by the NCAA Selection committee. Perhaps we can somewhat make up for that snub by earning a host site for this year's NCAA 1st and 2nd round games.

Individually Kelly Broussard is the WSU career leader in digs and is rapidly closing in on the MVC career record for digs.

Kelly is a finalist for Academic All-America honors after being named to the 2008 ESPN CoSIDA Academic All-District 1st team which includes the Big XII teams.

IMHO, Kelly is the heart and soul of this team and clearly the emotional leader of this team.

Angela Jakubov has played just about anywhere and everywhere the Coaches have asked of her and has probably sacrificed her personal stats for the good of the team in doing so. Perhaps the ultimate team player and tremendous leader by example for her Shocker teammates. Angela has also excelled in the classroom and was recently named to the 2008 ESPN CoSIDA Academic All-District 2nd team.

Kelly and Angela have represented WSU and Wichita with class and fiery competitiveness. Tremendous athletes, great students, excellent people.

Other than that there is not much to thank Kelly and Angela for.

        Great post.

What a shame we have about 50 'Cold related posts since then. When I comment on the lack of support for Volleyball, feel free to remember where this great topic on Senior night weekend was buried and what the hot button topic was at the time.

What's the minimum required attendance for tonight Doc?

            5,000?

I was thinking 7 was possible, but if it wasn't for those juveniles and their little games of footyball.

Shox lead 2 games to 1. Won the first two easily, 15 and 17. Lost game 3 at 22.

                Final Score

                25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 Shox

I think our ladies are having a tough time staying pumped for the games, they need to see another tough match before the post-season to make them have to really struggle, not just cut down the errors like they've had too in the last few matches.

I also think that we need to be more intimidating from the service line. Other valley teams seem to have a bit of success serving low, flat and fast against us, it'd be nice to see us employ the same kind of nastiness to get 3-4 point runs in a little easier and more often.

It's a W, but I'd like to see the girls a bit sharper toward the close of conference play.

I'd like to see the crowd a little sharper. There may have been 2800+ but it sounded like there were only about 50 most of the time.

Definitely not the Shox best game tonight though.

I thought we looked pretty solid in Sets 1 and 2. Lost our focus some at halftime and came out flat in Set 3. Got it going again midway through Set 4. No doubt we are grinding a little bit right now.

On the other hand I thought Kelly Broussard was very tough tonight. We are going to miss Kelly big time next year.

Also we had great balance in our attack with Emily, Lindsey and Katie getting 11 kills each, plus 10 for Sarah and 9 for Amanda.

Also keep in mind that SIU took UNI to 5 sets last weekend.

                    Bottom Line: 25-0 (14-0)

That's a bit of a disappointment, especially when we were playing such a high-caliber opponent.

I know it's a stupid question, but how many other teams that played women's volleyball tonight saw 2800+ in their stands? I'm guessing it's too many to count, so don't bother.

                        Right on.

At this point, every game will be a grind. At some point, it gets exhausting to maintain the same sustained success over and over and over again. It's human nature... especially when we're playing such inferior opponents. It happens in all sports. It happens to us in baseball. It happened to New England in the Super Bowl. It just.. happens.

Keep it up ladies! Let's finish off tomorrow night with a sweep for the seniors!

By the way, any upsets at all tonight/this week for teams ahead of us in the polls?

USC losing to Washington. Not an upset but a loss by #10 USC.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

K-State with a nice home win over Oklahoma on Wednesday and they take on Nebraska tomorrow in Lincoln. If K-State upsets the Cornhuskers there is a good chance they could move ahead of the Shocks, so that is a match to keep an eye on. Texas A&M took Nebraska to 5 sets on Wednesday.

#6 California dropped a 5 set match to unranked Arizona tonight, although I doubt they will fall enough to help the Shocks.

                              Thanks.

Isn't that like 8 losses for USC this year?

I'm sure they're all quality losses (if that's such a thing), but don't you think they're getting a lot of easy passes just for doing average against a difficult schedule?

You have to beat a few good teams once in a while..

                              I dunno. I could be flat-out wrong.
