    It's all relative Doc.

3,000 may not seem like much to you, especially if you're comparing it to say a men's basketball game or similar, but in the NCAA volleyball world, it will rank you in the Top 10 in the nation. So in terms of being relative, we do have some of the greatest fans - volleyball fans - in the country.

Volleyball is just not a sport you're going to get 10,000 a game packed into a place for a regular season game, no matter how good the product is.

What do Penn State and Nebraska average for attendance again?

Again, it's all relative. We should be thankful for what we do have and bring in. I do agree though that I wish we could get more, but it's really unfair to be greedy when you're being ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.
    Deuces Valley.
    ... No really, deuces.

I would be happy if we could beat some "mid-major" in average attendance - let's just beat Hawaii and not worry about anybody else. OK? :D

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

I wasn't bringing up Nebraska and Penn State's attendance numbers just to see if we were within striking range. I wanted to see those numbers to show even with the nation's top two teams/programs, they still only average.. what 4 or 5 thousand a game? I dunno?

Just a side note- I attended a NCAA regional in the early 2000's in which KState hosted and nebraska had to travel to Manhattan even though they were top 5 in nation in ranking and attendance..

You never know, maybe Nebraska will get their first glimpse of Koch come early December...

I'm totally frustrated with the lack of support. I know we are top 10 in the country. We could, and I believe should, be better.

How much better can the product be?

We have folks clammering for football to return....HA! We have what is becoming a top 20 program...a great coach.....no competition for fans and all we can draw on a Friday night or Saturday night is 3000 average?

For crying out LOUD we are 22 and freaking ZERO!

I don't want to hear a peep out of Shocker fans when Chris and Shannon head for greener pastures.....whenever that happens. We've had our chance to turn good into special.
Doc, I feel your frustration and agree that we have had an opportunity to turn something good into something very special. However, while I still hope that will happen, I am beginning to accept that it is what it is.

It was disappointing that we could not set an attendance record even with free admission and Shocker Madness to follow.

But when you see fans sitting on their hands behind the curtain during the 5th set of the volleyball match with an undefeated season on the line you just shake your head and maybe even laugh a little.

But as some of the other posters have pointed out, we are doing very well on a RELATIVE basis. No doubt though that we have potential to do better on an ABSOLUTE basis. Not sure what it will take though. Maybe a run into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA's. I just don't know.

For now though, I am just going to enjoy the ride and not stress too much over what other fans may or may not deem worthy of their support. Following and supporting the VB team is very enjoyable and entertaining. No sense diminishing that enjoyment and fun worrying over things I have no control over.

We really need to look at this in perspective.

Look at the schools ahead of us in attendance. Heck, look at Penn State. We're basically even with them in attendance. Look at Texas. There is a school in a metro area with rich alumni out the wazzou. They are averaging 2216.

The sport simply hasn't been a big thing in this part of the country. I still say that if we want to reach the next level, it will take a deep NCAA run.

Another thing that limits WSU is the level of competition. The Drake match notwithstanding, the MVC needs more than 2-3 quality teams to attract fans. It needs UNI, MSU, CU and ISU (red) to be NCAA-caliber nearly every year. They have good attendance numbers, too, and need to capitalize on it so that we can all improve our recruiting.

Another way to tell how good of crowd support we have...

How many schools women's basketball programs send out free tickets to the volleyball program season ticket holders to try and increase attendence???

You must have just received those. I'll have to check my mail. Unfortunately, it is also indicative of the state of our Women's Basketball program.

For some reason the national attendance figures have not been updated this week, but I believe Shocker fans have moved ahead of Michigan State into 7th place for the year, which is where we finished last year.

                    :good:

And a much better than an outside shot of ending up #5 for the year.

                      • I have considered sending this note to dkn@athletics.wisc.edu

                        Dear Diane Nordstrom:

The webpage http://uwbadgers.com/pdf/?id=9011 lists you as the contact person for the volleyball attendance site at UW. I am curious to learn when the 10/27/08 report (Report #9 ?) will be posted.

                        Thanks for your assistance.

                        Sincerely,

I have not sent it yet because Report #9 might already be "out there"; I can't find it on http://uwbadgers.com/pdf/?id=9011.

                        • I thought about that too, Spangler. and i also tried to see if there was some way to find it by trying different numbers inplace of the 9011, usually ended up on box scores or monthly badger athletic update pdfs

                            • If we could get some good promotion locally I would think we might move up some. We are undefeated and senior night is coming up what more reason do people need to come out?

                              • Slightly off-topic (to begin) but this video of Sarah is interesting. http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticl...ATCLID=1614725
Why "interesting"? She came to WSU because of her future teammates.

How is this relevant to attendance? Sarah McGee is a wonderful person. Lindsey Eckenrode, Stephanie Tokarz, Melissa Granville, etc. are also great people. They will have wonderful seasons with lots of success and then they will be gone. Kelly and Angela have only the SIU & UE matches, the MVC tourney here and possibly a NCAA subregional left playing in front of the Shocker Nation. Next year will be the last for
Stockman, Emily OH 6-0 Jr. Colorado Springs, Colo. (Winthrop) (Doherty HS)

Come out and see these great players before their time is past. Don't you wish you could see Sara Lungren play again? What about Sara Younes? Michele Hallagin? Don't miss the fantastic Shocker career of freshman Mary Elizabeth Hooper.

Buy season tickets next year and watch the Shocker careers of young local players like:
