I really don't think you should use "Fire Marshall" in the same sentence around here. Someone might get the wrong idea. ;-)
I thought of that when I typed it, but believe me, in all the time I've been an avid Shocker supporter, I've never been more excited about a basketball coach. The pieces to the puzzle are coming together and it is just a matter of time - perhaps not much time.
Oops, off-topic again. GO VOLLEYBALL!!
--'85.
Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88
We only need to draw a touch over 10,000 for the next 3 games to break the 3000 average for the season. I think we just may pull it off. It all hedges on tomorrow!
I do believe that those attending Shocker Volleyball matches do make a meaningful, although hard to measure, contribution to the success of the team.
Quote from Creigthton senior outside hitter Carolyn Decker in today's Wichita Eagle:
"This is the toughest place to play in the conference," Decker said. "This is a pretty intimidating place to play, but you're not a competitor if you're not getting up for big games like this."
Big attendance numbers certainly don't hurt recruiting either, not too mention the financial contribution to the overall athletic program which helps to take some of the pressure off the bell cow Men's Basketball program.
Shockerman is right about tonight being key for setting a new attendance record this year.
I would love to experience a Volleyball match with 8,000+ in attendance. That's probably a little optimistic but not impossible.
Hopefully, the Pep Band will also be there for the Volleyball match.
Based on last night's numbers, '72, I doubt anywhere near that number show up tonight.
I have become resigned to the fact that the VAST MAJORITY of baskeball fans simply refuse to support volleyball. We can talk a good game but when push comes to shove..."Oh it's high school football night" or "Oh it's not $1 night" or "Oh my pinky is sore" or "Oh I'll wait until we are playing for the National Championship and then I'll go...as long as it's here in Wichita"....and on and on.
If you think I am calling some of you out....you're right, I am. Heck, I am even challenging your manhood.
If you are too stubborn to believe this is a great product for spectators.....if you are too chauvanistic to believe that girls can compete at as high a level as the boys.....if you are too cheap to support a program that, frankly, is nearly PERFECT in representing YOUR home town and YOUR University......if you are too conceited to think that these extraordinary young ladies deserve your support..........
For those that attend and support the program, you are indeed fortunate. Success like this rarely comes along and you are indeed lucky to be there and enjoy the ride.
Btw, practice has been dynamite. Would love to talk about it. Won't though. Average support don't cut it, folks. See you good fans at the game tonight....see you bandwagon fans later.
If you don't want to go to every game, fine. I'm a realist. Hell, actually I am a diehard pessimist. There is NO excuse not to prepare and plan to be at last night's match.
CU is good. Really good. They've lost 8 matches.....3 to undefeated teams....at least 3 of the other 5 to ranked teams. Some of their fans can be truly annoying based on previous years. It is CU....like 'news said, it is always nice to beat the Jays even if it's "dominos". #12 in the country. Undefeated. Trying to get an NCAA Regional.
Here's what you missed. A great match. Another win. Good guys win. Jays lose. A first set played about as well as any I have seen this year....we were really, really good. Free volleyballs for the kids. A halftime show that was phenominal.
Will they keep track of attendance numbers tonight with it being free and all?
My understanding is they are just going to do a simple click click to track the numbers. I would assume that there will be a little creativity to come up with an attendance number though. Open door policy tonight.

I attend all of the matches, but I will say that 3000 fans on a friday night during high school footabll season isn't bad. What were you expecting for attendance?
I applaud your support 22. I applaud EVERYONE that supports volleyball.
We are averaging 2800/game....I expected a little more than a 200 bump for the biggest match at home during the rest of the regular season from a fan base that is quick to bring up attendance and support anytime they can.
However, a lot of people have kids that are associated with Friday night high school athletics in this area -whether it be the actual football team itself, cheerleaders, band members, etc. They have commitments to their families for some of the greatest times in their lives and as well, may have allegiances to their old school as well. It is playoff time as well..
So, in this case, to still draw almost 3,000 for a volleyball match with all this going on is pretty admirable IMO. I mean afterall, this school is in the Top 8 in the NATION in attendance ranks on the year. You can't be complaining that much.

Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

I also think there may be a fairly large number of people that budget (time) for one volleyball match a weekend, in much the same way as the baseball season. Hopefully we'll find that people were planning on being part of a record tonight.

Frankly I am at a loss.
Straight up, if I want to be able to make every single basketball game and baseball game like I do, I have to pack my schedule in the off season.
But I'll be damned, damned I say if I'm going to miss watching the Blue Jays win.
Plus, my daughter got a free volleyball. How could I not be there?
