      • Can someone answer my curiosity question. I've noticed that the vast majority of the volleyball teams on our schedule have 10-12 less players on their roster compared to us. SMU has 13, Houston has 18, Tulane has 14, Marquette 15, UCF 16, etc. How do we have 25? Do we simply have like 10 walk-on positions?

        • SMU sweeps UCF. (25-21, 25-19, 25-15)

Shocks and SMU meet next Friday in Koch Arena for sole possession of 1st place.

No. We have 13 walk ons. Volleyball has 12 scholarships and as a head count sport can not divide those up. We have wondered for years how Lambo can carry such a big roster and seemingly never have any team chemistry problems. Now how he attracts so many players is another question but he is known as a Coach who loves to train and develop players and he works and treats his non-scholarship players the same as his scholarship players. I remember his saying that it is this aspect of coaching that he likes the best.

One thing to note is that these volleyball players are for the most part outstanding students and I would guess that a good number of the walk ons receive some kind of academic scholarships.

But you're right. Lambo carries an unusually large number of players on his roster.

It will be interesting to see if this continues now that he can only suit up and travel with 15 players for AAC road matches.

So if some of the players are on academic scholarship, then that doesn't count against the 12 scholarships? There was a discussion in the basketball forum a couple of years ago about a player getting an academic scholarship and whether that counted against the 13 scholarship limit in basketball. I think it was decided that it did. So is it different in volleyball?

No I don't think it is any different. I don't believe a student athlete is precluded form receiving an academic scholarship. However, I'm sure there are some hoops to jump through and it has to be legitimate. In other words the student athlete has to have the academic credentials to earn such a scholarship award.

Many high school student athletes have high aspirations of attending college and playing a sport during these years. The chances of a student athlete getting

To qualify for academic scholarships, a student generally must have a 3.5 GPA or higher, 25 ACT score or higher, 1200 SAT score or higher, and must rank within the top 10 percent of the class. Every college or university may have different requirements — these are approximates.
A school can not have one set of academic scholarship standards for non-athletes and another set for athletes.

That said I don't really know what the scholarship situation is with the WSU volleyball team but I do know they have a team full of excellent students including the players on athletic scholarships.

                            Let's try it this way.

                            Memphis 3-2 TULANE
                            19 (17) 22 (14) 12

                            • I mentioned previously that I wasn't expecting Tulane's top 100 RPI ranking to last. The had dropped to 102 after last weekend. Expect a more dramatic drop come Monday.

11-2 in he non-con and 1-7 so far in the AAC. Had some Valley teams schedule like that in the past as well.

At least they went 11-2 against the crappy schedule?
