RH: Alyssa Gonzales Leads WSU in Scoring in Conference Matches

Alyssa Gonzales decided to play volleyball at Wichita State because she heard good things about the coaching staff, felt at home on her visit and saw an opportunity for playing time after redshirting in 2023.

She formed those impressions during a rush of phone calls and visits in December after deciding to transfer from TCU. Fortunately, the coach Chris Lamb experience turned out as she hoped.

"Honestly, I had no idea what I was getting into when I committed," she said. "I know this coaching staff will continue to make me better. He sees so many things and has so many tricks up his sleeve to fix the little things."

Gonzales, a redshirt freshman outside hitter, is on a roll that is proving her instincts correct about her fit at WSU. She recorded 10 or more kills in six of the past seven matches with attack percentages of .290 or better in five.

"I've been impressed with the angles she hits and the depth," Lamb said. "Aggressive swings and on less-than-perfect sets she's still willing to go for it. We all know what a difference that makes."

Gonzales, from Aledo, Texas, hit a new gear in AAC play. She leads the Shockers with 101 kills and 106.5 points in eight conference matches. She is hitting .267 in eight AAC matches, raising her season mark to .203.

"I suspect comfort and confidence have a lot to do with it," Lamb said. "We mapped out a way for her to be successful. If you look at it now, it seems like a whole lot of improvement since the spring matches."

The Shockers played exhibition matches in Brazil last spring and Lamb noticed the way their attackers hit cross-court shots. He adapted some of their drills for the Shockers. Gonzales credits the drills with improving her approach and opening new scoring areas, especially around the 10-foot line.

"I used to be such a line-game hitter, so I would always hit lines," she said. "It really worked, getting my hips around the ball and getting my feet to the ball."

Lamb compares her ability to score with cross-court shots to former Shocker Jody Larson, who earned honorable mention AVCA All-American honors in 2016.

"She now turns her hips, almost at me, and she can hit that (10-foot line) ball really well," setter Izzi Strand said. "Alyssa has a super-power of snapping her wrist and putting the ball down in front of diggers. She finds a little hole and she snaps it through."

Gonzales visited WSU last December, encouraged by a TCU assistant coach who thought she would work well with Lamb. Lamb talked to her first on Zoom and declared he wanted her to visit WSU last and commit.

The portal, she learned, moved quickly with coaches asking her to choose without a visit. Two weeks of calls and visits decided her future. She remembers taking 15 calls on the first day.

"It just all felt so right," she said. "Just walking around (Koch Arena), I had an overwhelming feeling that this is where I need to be. I literally started tearing up, and I am not a crier at all."

Stout, Strand Named First Team All-Conference

Wichita State middle blocker Morgan Stout and setter Izzi Strand were named First Team All-American Athletic Conference (12 Players) on Thursday. The 2nd team consisted of 8 players.

Regular season champion South Florida brought home three of the five major awards: Player of the Year (Maria Clara Andrade, Jr., OH), Setter of the Year (Caroline Dykes, Sr., S) and Coach of the Year (Jolene Shepardson). Tulsa's Marta Pecalli claimed Libero of the Year and Sydney Jones of Temple secured Freshman of the Year.

The Shocker tandem was selected Second Team All-Conference in 2023 and have delivered another standout campaign in their final seasons at Wichita State. Stout leads all middle blockers nationally in kills per set (3.10) and ranks second at the position in points per set (3.90) hitting a team-best .316 in the process. Her performance in conference play is even more impressive, as the native of Fowler, Kansas is averaging 3.46 kills per set and 4.38 points per set at a .343 hitting percentage. Over the final nine matches of the regular season, Stout recorded 13 kills or more in every match and had outings of 20 (2x), 22, and 23 terminations, establishing a new career high in the final regular season match against UTSA. She was named to the NCAA Volleyball Rotation of the Week after racking up consecutive kills-blocks double-doubles against Memphis and UAB, earning the first of two American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Awards.

Stout has also developed into a legitimate weapon from the service line, firing 27 aces after totaling 14 in her first three seasons combined. In addition to her offensive prowess, the redshirt senior is averaging 1.00 block per set with a career-best 14 solo blocks and 101 block assists and has even set new career highs in both digs (98) and digs per set (0.85).

Strand continues to pile up assists at a dizzying rate, ranking 11th nationally with 1,119 helpers entering play on Friday. Her 9.73 assists per set are third in the American Athletic Conference, and the 5th year senior is averaging 10.31 assists since the start of conference play. She has reached 40 assists in each of the last nine matches of the regular season, highlighted by a season-best 54 assists against North Texas on November 15. Strand has already eclipsed 100 kills for a second consecutive season (105) and has increased her kills per set to 0.91. The native of Carlsbad, California is also putting together another consistent campaign at the service line, with 17 aces and a 1:1 aces:error ratio.

Defensively, Strand is in the midst of her most complete season as both a blocker and digger. Her 0.47 blocks per set represents a new career high, featuring three matches with five rejections. Her 2.51 digs per set match her career high established last season and include six matches with 15 or more digs. Strand was one kill away from her first career triple-double against Memphis on October 25, when she finished with nine kills, 44 assists and 20 digs.

RH: STRAND SETS WSU FOR SUCCESS

Izzi Strand arrived in Wichita in January 2023 to restart her volleyball career with the aim of standing as one of 64 in December.

On Sunday evening, she watched ESPN with her teammates, coaches and fans. When the NCAA volleyball bracket showed "Wichita State," she had what she wanted.

"We've all dreamed of this since we were 5," she said. "Especially being my last year and finally achieving one of my biggest goals, it's just such a wholesome feeling."

The Shockers (18-13) are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017. They play at SMU (24-7), which is seeded second in the region, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Strand, a senior from Carlsbad, Calif., transferred from UC San Diego with two seasons of eligibility. Her addition coincides with Wichita State's best seasons since it went to NCAA's in 2016 and 2017. In 2023, the Shockers won the National Invitational Volleyball Championship after finishing second in the AAC. She earned AVCA All-Region honors and MVP of the NIVC.

Middle blocker Morgan Stout quickly appreciated Strand's skills during the spring season in 2023. Strand's enthusiasm and openness to feedback helped Stout blossom from a raw talent into one of the nation's top middles.

"I love this, because she's so competitive and so driven to wanting the best for her hitters," Stout said. "Having that connection with Izzi has always been a confidence-booster for me. If her and I are not connecting she's like 'Just keep going. We're going to figure this out.'"

Her teammates see that attitude on the court.

"She helped the team grow a lot, and she herself as grown a lot," attacker Emerson Wilford said. "She expects a lot out of you. She keeps things going, keeps people engaged as the setter."

I hope this information is incorrect, but the twitter account is pretty reliable.

UTSA losing 3 key pieces from their team that made strides towards the end of the season. Setter, middle and OH, all top players.

UAB has 3, 2 key pieces in the portal. Tulsa losing 2 nice players. Charlotte and Temple, a reserve setter. Memphis losing 5, 2 of which were regular contributors.

So far, East Carolina, Tulane, Rice, FAU, North Texas & USF have nobody in the portal. But the portal has only been open for about 24 hours.

I don't see that as a total surprise. With, at least potentially, Gabi returning next year along with Katie, and an improving Grace, Olivia Brown coming off a redshirt year and an incoming freshman DS/Libero (Addison Gardner) perhaps she is looking for a place where she can be featured more. Similar to Lara Uyar transferring to ECU.

With a signing class of 9 as of now and with 4 seniors completing their eligibility (Izzi, Morgan, Sarah B, and Annalie) I am expecting quite a few more.

That is a shame if Reagan is leaving. I think she will be good. I do agree that she is probably looking for more playing time as libero. Gabi and Katie are probably in the pole position for the libero jersey next year.
I bet UAB's Kelsey Smith will be picked up pretty quickly.
UTSA's setter AnnikaSokol is transferring out after coming to there from UCF the year before.
Tulsa has two grad students in the portal. They have 9 players on their 2025 roster including 4 incoming freshmen. I guess they will be hitting the portal to fill out their roster. They had 7 seniors/grad students this year.

For those that want to follow along with the who's who of the transfer portal, I have found this site to be accurate. The volleyball fall/winter window is December 8th to January 6th, 2025.

I see that Haley Wolfe is in the transfer portal.

In good news, Morgan made First Team Central Region. Well deserved. I hope she makes it to an All American team. Not sure when they are announced, I think its closer to Championship match.

Only three other AAC players made regional teams

Maria Clara Andrade, USF 1st team Southeast Region
Carolina Dykes, USF Honorable Mention Southeast Region
Lademi Ogunlana, Rice Honorable Mention Southwest Region

Frosty got Honorable Mention in the Southwest Region.
