  • Shocker SB v Memphis

The Shockers conclude their regular season AAC schedule with a weekend series against Memphis. Games are Friday at 6 pm, Saturday at 4 pm, and Sunday at noon.

The Tigers are easily the weakest team in the conference. Their record is 6-40 and 1-23. Their lone conference win was over UTSA, the other weakest team in the conference.

Taniyah Brown at .743 is the only player with an OPS greater than .700. The team OPS in conference play is .547. The pitchers in conference-starts order are Rylee Dugar, Brown, and Abigail Morgan. Unsurprisingly, the conference pitching stats are, uh, unattractive. The teams numbers are an ERA of 6.78 and a WHIP of 2.30.

The Shocker offense continues to be not much beyond Addie (1.551 and eleven homers), CC (1.417 and seven homers), Taylor (1.336 and ten homers), and Krystin (1.126). There is a big gap down to Caroline (.712) and Bailey (.695).

Chloe is climbing the charts (ERA of 2.93 and WHIP of 1.33) and is now the presumptive ace again, but Alex still easily has the most innings of the four with stats of 4.02 and 1.72.

The Shockers are in fifth place in the AAC standings with a record of 13-11. The only team within reach is Tulsa at 14-10. Their series this weekend is at Florida Atlantic. Tulsa won the series with the Shocks, so the Shockers need a sweep of Memphis and no more than one win by Tulsa to move up in the seedings. North Texas travels to play Charlotte in the other series of note.

That is a really nice touch that a team would honor the visiting Seniors on their last road trip. Do we do that? Would not be surprised if that is a custom in the conference.

Yes, I think that is pretty standard anymore at least with the women's sports. Volleyball does it and has done that for quite a few years. Not sure about women's basketball but I suspect they do. Possible the women's tennis does the same.

According to an email I received Wednesday evening from Shocker Softball less than 100 tickets remain (as of Wednesday evening) for each of the 3 senior weekend games.

            Game One

            Memphis 3-8 Shockers

Chloe got the start in this one. The Shocks took the early lead with four in the second including a three-run homer by CC and another run in the third when Bailey was wild-pitched home.

In the fourth, Chloe gave up a two-run homer that was partially offset by an infield single for an RBI by Bailey. 6-2 after four.

After Chloe walks the leadoff batter in the fifth, Alex came on, giving up an RBI-double. 6-3 after five.

The Shockers completed the scoring with RBI by Taylor on a ground out and a single by Bailey.

Chloe pitched 4.0f1, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks while fanning nine. Alex gave up five hits in her 3.0 innings, striking out three.

CC, Addie, and Bailey all had multi-hit games among the ten hits for the Shockers.

              Other Friday Games

              North Texas 2-3(9) Charlotte
Both teams scored a run in the seventh to send the game to extras where a sac fly won the game for the 49ers.

              North Texas 5-7 Charlotte

              Tulsa 7-8 Florida Atlantic
Tulsa took a 7-1 lead to the bottom of the sixth but gave up two runs and then five!! runs in the bottom of the seventh. One of the Tulsa losses the Shocks need.

              UAB 1-3 East Carolina

              USF 2-1(11) UTSA

Lauren finally gives up her first hit, an infield single, with one out in the 6. 3-0 Shocks.
                  Go Shocks!

Lauren definitely was on today spinning a complete game 1-hit shut out walking 3 and striking out 7 on a day the wind was blowing in from left. Her biggest jam was in the 1st inning when she walked 2 with 2 outs. The Shocks did not exactly ligtht it up offensively scoring only 3 runs (2 earned). The hightlight of the Shocker offense was a 6th inning lead off home run into the wind on a 3-0 pitch from Addie, her 87th home run of her career, which landed well up into the tree to the right of the scoreboard.

Really good to see both Lauren and Chloe coming around here at the end of the season. That will be sorely needed if the Shocks are going to have a chance to win the AAC Tournament, especially witht the offense sputtering a bit lately.

                      Other Saturday Games

                      Tulsa 2-8 Florida Atlantic

                      UAB 3-2 East Carolina

                      USF 5-8 UTSA

The Shockers are now a game up on Tulsa in the standings. Either a Shocker win tomorrow or a Tulsa loss clinches the fourth spot in the standings for the Shocks.

A little surprised that Chloe is getting the start. Though they might go with Alison and try to rest Chloe as much as possible heading into the AAC Tournament. OTOH Chloe might actually benefit from the extra work.

Getting a little concerned about the Shocker offense. 0-5 with RISP in the first 2 innings.

With CC on 3rd, who had singled leading off the 3rd inning and Taylor on 2nd after a 1-out line drive double to left center Burbs gets an infield single to drive in CC with Taylor holding on at 2nd. After Sami grounded into a 6-5 force out leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd, Lainee drove a ball off the scoreboard on a truncated swing that she squared up about as good as you could to put the Shocks up 4-0. That was Lainee's first home run since March 9th.

The Shocks put another 4 spot up in the 5th to close out an 8-0 run rule win.

Chloe completes a 5-inning no hiiter. She wasn't super sharp as she walked 4 and hit a batter. MemphEx got a runner to 2nd in the 3rd inning and to 3rd in the 5th inning. Chloe did strike out 9.

Shocks secure the #4 seed for the upcoming AAC Tournament at Wilkins Stadium and will open play against #9 seed UTSA.

The Shockers swept UTSA in March 10-2, 8-0, 12-0 which were all 5-inning run rule games.

If the Shockers beat UTSA they get the winner of the game between the No 5 seed Tulsa and the No 8 seed South Florida.

I like the term MemphEx ... though with how much money they throw around, they are basically average at two sports (Men's Basketball and football) and below average to trash at basically everything else.

Looking at the standings this year it probably would have made more sense to have only the top 8 teams advance to the tournament with the bottom 2 teams not making it. UTSA and MemphEx are a combined 6-48 in AAC play. Especially in a single elimation tournament.

The top 2 teams get a double bye into the semi-finals. So the 2 teams out of the reamining 8 teams that advance to the semi-finals with FAU and Charlotte will have played 2 games in two days while FAU and Charlotte have been resting and not using pitching.

Perhaps that is a bit too much of a reward for finishing at the top of the league.

You could then play the tournament over 3 days instead of 4.
