Wong Headlines AAC Regular Season Awards

CC Wong headlines the list of 2024 American Athletic Conference regular season awards as the Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday morning.

The senior from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia burst onto the scene for Wichita State in her lone season with the Shockers. All she's done is rank 2nd nationally in batting average (.476), 3rd in on base percentage (.571) and 9th in slugging percentage (.888). In league games, Wong hit .481/.584/.926 with 10 doubles, 8 home runs, 20 walks and 31 RBI. Her .481 batting average is nearly 100 points higher than the next closest student-athlete not named Addison Barnard or Krystin Nelson.

Wong is also a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection, and joined by teammates Barnard and Taylor Sedlacek.

Barnard becomes the second Shocker, along with Sydney McKinney, to go 4-for-4 on First Team selections. The Beatrice, Neb., native has been named to the First Team all four years at Wichita State and was the 2022 American Player of the Year. She will leave Wichita State as the program's all-time and single season record holder in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage. Her 87 career home runs rank ninth on the NCAA all-time home run list. In 27 conference games this season, Barnard hit .413 with 8 doubles, 12 home runs and 20 RBI. Her 18 total home runs this season rank Top 20 nationally.

Sedlacek is a First Team pick for the first time after earning All-Rookie Team honors a season ago. The Bennington, Neb., native enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 42 runs, while making the move to shortstop midway through the season. When the schedule flipped to conference play, Sedlacek went to another level. She hit .329 with 5 doubles, 10 home runs and 32 RBI. Her 32 RBI in AAC games led the team.

Chloe Barber was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Barber made a national name for herself early on and finished the regular season playing her best softball of the season. As a freshman, Barber leads the team in appearances (25), wins (9), saves (3), ERA (2.99), shutouts (4), innings (84.1), opponent batting average (.185) and strikeouts (134). She has four games with 14+ strikeouts this season, including a single game record 16 vs. Illinois State in February. Her 11.1 strikeouts per 7 innings ranks 2nd in the country.

Looking at all time Home Run leaders, Addie has a decent chance of finishing Top 5. She's sitting at 86. Number one is well out of reach at 122. Number two is 95 which isn't crazy. Three right now is 92 but there are two active players ahead of Addie. So if she can get 6 more home runs with minimum 9 games left, she will at minimum be tied for 5th. Obviously the longer our season goes the better for her.

WSU - WSU softball star shines in classroom and with the bat

Wichita State senior center fielder Addison Barnard is lighting up college softball this week at the American Athletic Conference Championship at Wilkins Stadium. In two wins, she hit five home runs, including a grand slam to seal Thursday’s 11-9 win over Tulsa.

Barnard owns 92 career home runs, tied for fourth in NCAA history.

Her performance as a health science major is equally important.

She earned College Sports Communicators first-team Academic All-American in 2022. She is a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and a fixture on the AAC All-Academic teams and WSU's Athletic Director's Honor Roll (most recently with a 4.0 GPA last fall).

Barnard applied to the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing with plans to work in anesthesia. Her mother Deann Barnard is a nurse practitioner.

Watching her work inspired Barnard.

"As soon as I got into the hospital setting, I got a feeling that was where I was supposed to be," she said. "I really love helping people. Being able to connect with people in that aspect of life was really interesting to me."

Wichita State plays Florida Atlantic at 2:30 p.m. Friday (May 10) in the tournament semifinals. The game is on ESPN+.

I have Addie at #3. Karli Spaid now has 102 home runs in 220 games for 0.4636 per game average. Jocelyn Alo is 122/267 = .4569 and Addie is at 93-205 = .4537.

Also Addie has 66 stolen bases in her career and Karli has 56 career stolen bases. Jocelyn Alo had 12 stolen bases in her 267 games.

By the way the 5-7 Spaid (who plays 3rd base I believe) and the 5-6 Addie B could pass for sisters:

Trying to pick the most ridiculous Addison Barnard statistic is a chore.

Putting her amazing career into perspective by comparing it to previous eras isn't perfect, but it does resonate.

Barnard, an outfielder who recently completed her Wichita State career, hit 33 home runs in 2022 – one more than all the Shockers home run leaders hit total from 1977-1987. It took her predecessors as season leaders until 2000 to reach 90 total, four behind Barnard's 94 career homers.

Those 94 career home runs are one more than the Shockers hit as a team from 1978-1994. Her 66 career steals are also first on WSU's list.

The game and the bats and balls changed significantly from the 1970s until home run totals began to climb in the early 2000s. Barnard's lowest season total of 14 home runs would have ranked first for a season at WSU until 2007, when Cynthia Verhulst hit 15. Nobody hit more than 14 again until Cacy Williams hit 16 in 2014.

No way of knowing how many home runs that shoulder injury in her junior year cost her but it definitely changed her swing. I don't think it is unreasonable to think she might have hit another 10-15 home runs if she had been healthy. And Addie did not benefit from getting additional games in during the Covid year.

I listened to her yesterday on the Bob and Jeff Show; she's fantastic. She's very grateful to Wichita State and is such a beautiful young woman; the guy who ends up with her, will have hit the jackpot.
