RH: "Defense Has Been On Our Side"

"It was simple volleyball," defensive specialist Annalie Heliste said. "That helped us go in there and play normal defense, nothing crazy. Watch their hitters line of approach. See where their body is facing."

Wichita State produced an excellent defensive night against an overmatched opponent and the Shockers considered the effort routine.

Wichita State entered the match holding opponents to a .151 attack percentage, No. 21 nationally.

"Defense has been on our side, one of the reasons why we're winning," coach Chris Lamb said. "Serving tonight was great. We kept these guys out of system a lot. The Shockers still need to tighten it up in serve-receive. It's a little disconcerting there with the balls we watched land and didn't control."

A balanced attack with Foster recording nine kills and Rohling eight also looked good to Lamb. Setter Izzi Strand set the middles at a good rate and opened plenty of lanes for attackers. The Shockers finished with a .297 attack percentage, with a mere 11 errors, after hitting .119 on Wednesday.

The Shockers will need to take that well-round performance on the road this coming weekend for an early conference showdown. They play at SMU (8-5, 2-0) on Friday and Sunday. The Mustangs own wins over Florida State, then-No. 14 Baylor and Texas Tech.

The Shocks have not had too many players from the State of Michigan but glad Lambo found this gem.

Yes, she is. I have always liked her game. And she has another year to play after this season. The Shocks have not had too many players from the State of Michigan but glad Lambo found this gem.

Tonight's attendance was 2,066. A decent and enthusiastic crowd.

The Pep Band showed up at around the end of Set 1.

Natalie is fun to watch. 7 kills in the third set to finish 9 1 17 for .471. Add in 6 block assists. Solid as usual. Started the match with a Frosty kill, ended the match with a Frosty kill. Her error came on a match point.

0 errors tonight for Sophia. Good bounce back game for her. (8 0 14 .571) Add in 1 solo and 3 block assists.

Outside hitters did much better this game. Ba (9 3 22 .273) lead the way. Two of her three errors were in the 3rd set, and she had one block assist. Emmerson (6 2 18 .222) put in a good performance. She had a team leading 14 digs and 4 block assists. Her 2 errors came in the 3rd set.

The Shockers only had 3 attacking errors in the first two sets and 8 in set 3. Shocker errors were the only thing keeping Charlotte in the game after starting off set 3 on a 4-0 run.

The 49ers lean heavily on an imposing front row that ranks 18th nationally in total blocks with 121.0.
Charlotte had only 4 blocks. Shockers, ranked T48th in total blocks with 106, got 10 more tonight. I don't know if that number includes blocks from the East Carolina game. I'm glad the Shockers didn't try the hammer-it-through-the-block style of offence.

Izzi had 31 assists. 3 of Izzi's 4 points (4 2 13 .154) came in the third set. She also had 1 block assist.

Gabi had 8 digs and 2 aces.

Glad to see MorganW back out on the court. She only played back row and had 10 digs. MorganS finished 5 3 17 .118 and had 3 block assists.

Shocks with a dominating 14, 13 and 17 sweep of Charlotte with the Shocks controlling the net. The Shocks had 41 kills to only 21 for Charlotte and registered 10 blocks to only 4 for the 49ers.

I would like to say the Shockers played really well in this match but I an not really sure I can say that. Charlotte was just pretty bad I thought. So it was kind of hard to guage how well the Shocks played.

The first set started slowly but with the set tied at 7-7 the Shocks scored 9 of the next 10 points to take a 16-8 lead.
The Shocks led the 2nd set wire to wire and cruised to the easy win after taking a 13-4 lead.
A sloppy start by the Shocks to the 3rd set had Charlotte leading 8-5. A 10 point run by the Shocks with Gabi Maas on the service line propelled the Shocks to a 15-8 lead and the Shocks cruised home from there.

Morgan Weber was back on the court tonight for the Shocks but Brylee Kelsey was MIA.

The Shocks hit 41-11-101 = .297 for a kill rate of 40.6% and and an error rate of just 10.9%. Charlotte hit 21-23-93 = -.022.

Sophia bounced back from her poor performance at ECU hitting 8-0-14 = .571, Ba Koehler was 9-2-23 = .273 and Emerson Wilford was 6-2-18 = .222. Emerson was also in on 4 of the Shocks 10 blocks and also had 12 digs to lead the Shocks which has to be a first for her.

Frosty finished strong at 9-1-17 = .471 and her one miss was at 15-24 in the 3rd set when she tried to vaporize a volleyball and hit it long on a ball she puts away just about every time. Frosty also was in on 6 of the Shocks 10 blocks.

Swifty was a little off tonight hitting 5-3-17 = .118 and was in on 3 blocks.

Will have a much better idea of where the Shocks stand after the 2 match road swing next week aganst SMU in Dallas.
