  • Volleyball Offseason/Roster Changes

Megan Reilly is transferring from Arizona State to Wichita State. I couldn't find a thing on her since college. I think she redshirted last year and apparently didn't see the floor at all this season.

A brief perusal of her club and she seems like a 6'0 OH with a big arm and average athleticism. I think she'll be a redshirt SO in the fall. Will she help? No idea.

There's also a list of transfers, and I didn't see anyone on WSU's leaving list, but it's just starting.

For what it's worth, ASU has 8 players in the portal so far.

Upon further examination, it would appear she left the Sun Devils early in the season, if she even was with them at all in the fall.

Melanie Parra from Texas is in the portal. I'll take her, sight unseen.

I think her last name is Maas.

Ohio State volleyball explains why five players from Elite 8 team are transferring

          https://www.dispatch.com/story/sport...s/69754260007/

Ohio State women's volleyball advanced to the Elite 8 this year, its first trip to the regional final since 2004.

Soon after the Buckeyes lost to the eventual champion Texas (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21), five OSU players – all seniors – entered the transfer portal.

That included All-American setter Mac Podraza and All-American libero Kylie Murr. Outside hitters Gabby Gonzales and Jenaisya Moore would be leaving, as would Adria Powell, who has now set a course for Clemson.

Basically, the Buckeye seniors were caught in a roster crunch caused by the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility to athletes affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but ending an amnesty for programs over scholarship limits after this season.

Podraza admitted that with five incoming freshmen, Ohio State was put in an "awkward and weird situation."

"It's just how COVID ended up making it go," she said.

Oldenberg met with each of the seniors after the NCAA tournament, and there were tears in every meeting as she explained the situation, and why she felt this was the way things had to play out.

It’s no secret that an incredible number of NCAA Division I players have flocked to the transfer portal. As of Saturday morning, there were 669 in the portal. There are also 316 Division II and 90 Division III all looking for new schools.

Gabi seemed to play quite a bit at the end of the year in a DS role for a TCU team that finished 3rd in the B12 and lost to Wisky in the round of 32. Gotta think she'll get every chance to play libero next season. Improved back row play would certainly help to accentuate a fairly talented front row.

It is and I knew it was. I just can't type - or proofread, apparently.

EDIT: NO! The spellchecker! The spellchecker did it. Yeah, that's the ticket. Of course, there is still proofreading.

The Shocks had 18 players on last year's roster with only Lily Liekweg not returning that I am aware of. But with 5 new players reporting in additional player departures would not be a surprise but I have no idea who that might be, if any.

Of the 5 players reported to be coming in 2 are liberos/defensive specialist (Gabi Maas and Reagan Anderson), 1 is an OH (Megan Reilly) and 2 are most likely middle blockers although they might be able to play on the outside as well (Hayley Wolfe and Allie Paulsen).

Maas at 5-9 joins Katie Galligan, also 5-9, as our tallest defensive specialist. Anderson at 5-3 joins 5-2 Laura Uyar at the pint-sized version of defensive specialist.

I agree that Maas will be given every opportunity to earn the Libero position. Otherwise, I wonder if Lambo will try to get back to redshirting a lot of his 1st year players.

I wonder if Lauren Wheeler, who redshirted this year, is the heir apparent to Kayce Litzau who I believe finishes up her eligibility next year? Of course, I think Hailey Plugge has 2 years of eligibility left if their is a mutual interest in that. What are your thoughts about that WuDrWu?

Join the club. I can proofread okay, I just don't see well. I do feel fortunate that for now I can think faster than I can type but that sometimes leads to head scratching posts at times. In your defense the a and s are next to each other on the keyboard. I find that challenging at times as well with my chubby fingers

This to me is why the transfer portal has to be allowed. When a school can decide to not renew your scholarship any given year it's an unfair power balance without a player being able to do the same.

With the number of athletes transferring, it’s obvious that schools and coaches are going to take advantage of athletes being immediately eligible, and take scholarships away when players don’t show immediate promise. It’s a circular and self fulfilling prophecy.

But you must also remember that all of these players from Ohio St would have been out of eligibility for next year had Covid not happened. I'm willing to bet that there are several others in the portal under the same circumstances.

Brooklyn Leggett, will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall. 6'0" opposite with limited playing time and stats for Colorado Mesa this fall. Played in less than half the sets, hit .069.

Also see that Sophie Childs is in the portal.

And I see a Madison Wilson transferring in. Not sure who that is, as it's a fairly common name, but there is a Madison Wilson at Idaho and she appears to be in the portal, but she's listed on the 2022 team as Madison, in the portal as Maddie, and in WSU's in box portal as Madison. I'm guessing it's the same young lady, but I don't know.

If it's her, she's a 6'1" middle, rising sophomore who played a lot this fall and may have been injured for about a month. There's a hole in her stats from early October to November, otherwise she played nearly every set, if not every other set. She averaged almost 2 kills a set and hit .266. There is conflicting information on her blocking, but game by game shows 68 total blocks on the season. Her Vandal team was awful, so it's difficult to extract much from these stats. I watched a little of Idaho vs Idaho State during the season, but I don't remember her either way. And of course, it very well might be a different Madison Wilson.

Here's a video of her being interviewed after being named Big Sky DPOW early in the season after a 3-0 weekend. Unfortunately, those were 3 of only 4 total wins on the year for Idaho. I wonder if they didn't have other injuries or issues. In that 3-0 weekend they did beat Wyoming (WSU beat the Cowboys 3-2 the week before) 3-1.
