    SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
    • Northern Illinois enters the weekend with a record of 3-3 prior to their matchup Friday night against Kansas City. The Huskies have defeated NJI and Illinois-Chicago in straight sets, plus a four-set victory over Campbell. Their losses have come to South Dakota State in DeKalb, and to SIU-Edwardsville and Valparaiso as part of the Popcorn Classic in Valpo.
    • The Huskies were picked fourth in the MAC West Division preseason poll after a 16-13 season in 2021. The 16 victories were the most in a single season for the NIU since the 2016 campaign.
    • Northern Illinois returns eight letterwinners with game experience from the 2021 roster, highlighted by outside hitter Katie Jablonski, middle blocker Charli Atiemo, and setter Ella Mihacevich.
    • Notre Dame transfer Sammi Lockwood ranks second on the team in kills per set through six matches.
    • Five-time MAC Coach of the Year Ray Gooden is now in his 21st season leading the Huskies. The all-time leader in wins, Gooden has taken Northern Illinois to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.
    SCOUTING THE KANGAROOS:

Kansas City enters play on Friday with a record of 3-4 against a challenging schedule. The Roos opened the season in Peoria at the Bradley Invitational, which included a match against #21 Western Kentucky, then moved on to New Orleans for the Tulane Classic, where they defeated American Athletic Conference foe Tulane in straight sets and also downed Howard in five.
The Roos home opener came Wednesday night against recent Shocker opponent Kansas. The 19th-ranked Jayhawks rallied for a four-set win after Kansas City claimed the opening set, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.
Kansas City was picked seventh in the 2022 Summit League preseason poll after a 21-10 (12-6) campaign a season ago. The Roos were upended in the first round of the Summit League tournament by Oral Roberts.
The Swinney Center has proven a tough venue for opposing teams, as the Roos went 7-2 on their home floor in 2021.
Kansas City head coach Christi Posey was a member of the volleyball and softball teams at WSU before transferring to KU, where she graduated and later coached as an assistant. Now in her 12th season with the Roos, Posey led Kansas City to their first-ever postseason appearance at the D1 level in 2019, a bid to the NIVC.

          Shocks vs Kansas City

The Shocks weren't all that impressive in the 1st set with only 11 kills while hitting .184 and with 6 service errors but Kansas City only hit .166. Plus the Shocks outblocked the Roos 3-0 and had 2 services aces to none for the Roos. Shocks take the set 25-22 to go up 1-0.

The Shocks were much sharper in Set 2 hitting .371 on 17-4-35 vs .206 for the Roos on 11-4-34. The Shocks had 2 aces to none for the Roos and the Shocks cut down their service errors to 2. Shocks take the set 25-19 to go up 2-0.

Shocks built a 17-11 lead in Set 3 but after a KC timeout gave up a 4 point run to make it 17-15. Most of that KC run was due to poor play by the Shocks. Roos tie it up at 18-all. Shocks fall behind 22-24. Shocks tie it at 24-all but an then manage to pull out a 31-29 win in spite of themselves thanks largely to Natalie Foster.

In this match, Natalie was 0-0-1 = .000 in the first set. In the 2nd and 3rd sets she was 10-1-16 = .563. Player of the match for sure.

Decent bounce back from this morning by the Shocks but there is just something missing with this team. They just seem a little incomplete and a lot inconsistent. Maybe lacking mental toughness and focus at times. Hard to say for sure.
