  • Shocker SB v Memphis

The Shockers continue their conference schedule with three games at home against Memphis this weekend. Games are Friday at 6 pm, Saturday at 1 pm, and Sunday at noon.

The Tigers are 16-29 and 2-10. They have one win against both East Carolina and Tulsa and were swept by Houston and UCF.

For Memphis, the only OPS of note is that of Gracie Morton (1.020) who has a team-leading four home runs. The vast majority of the innings belong to Hallie Siems (ERA of 4.31 and WHIP of 1.66) and Mikayla Hoschak (5.79 and 1.69).

The offense of the Shockers is led by Addison (1.443 and 22 homers), Sydney (1.400 and eleven homers), Lauren (1.169 and eight homers), Neleigh (1.160 and eleven homers), and Zoe (1.067 and eleven homers). The pitching staff at the moment is Alison (3.42 and 1.56), Erin (4.52 and 1.59), and Caitlin (5.09 and 1.74).

UCF is 9-0 in conference play with the Shocks in 2nd at 7-2. They meet in Wichita in the final series of the regular season. Between now and then UCF has seires with Houston (7-4-1) and Tulsa (3-5-1). Maybe Houston or Tulsa could take a game from UCF but most likely UCF will be 15-0 when the come to town. The Shocks have series left against Memphis and ECU who are both sitting at 2-10 in AAC play.

At this point my feeling is that the Shocks will have to sweep all 3 of their remaining series in order to win an AAC Championship and they certainly cannot look ahead or take the Memphis and ECU series for granted.

        Friday Game

Lineup: Sydney, Addison, Lauren, Zoe, Neleigh, Jessica 3B, Lolo, Lainee, Wylie with Caitlin in the circle. Hoschak is the starter for Memphis.

The Tigers plate a run in the first on three singles. The Shocks load the bases on three singles and Zoe is hit by a pitch to drive in one run. Neleigh follows with a grand slam. When Jessica walks, Kailey Hilderbrand (4.95 and 1.68) is on to pitch. She is third on the innings list for Memphis. The Shockers score another run on walk, single by Lainee to load the bases, and a walk to Wylie. 6-1 after one.

1-2-3 in the second for the Tigers. Neleigh is hit by a pitch with one out for the only runner for the Shocks. 6-1 after two.

After another 1-2-3 inning for Memphis (and seven in a row for Caitlin), Sydney walks with two out and Addison follows with a homer. 8-1 after three.

Caitlin gives up a one-out single in the fourth and then induces a 1-6-3 DP. In the bottom of the fourth, the Shockers put a runs-ahead game in play with a single by Neleigh and a homer by Jessica. After a single by Lolo, Zoey LeCompte (6.88 and 2.41) is in the circle for Memphis. Wylie singles but LeCompte get three outs with no further damage. 10-1 after four.

Two singles in the Memphis fifth, but Lauren throws out the runner trying to score from second to end the game.

        Memphis 1-10(5) Shockers

Caitlin gave up six hits and one run in five innings. She issued no walks and struck out four.

The Shockers had eleven hits with two each by Addison, Lauren, and Neleigh. Addison, Neleigh, and Jessica all homered.

Pretty decent outing by Caitlin. Not dominant has she did give up 6 hits in 5 innings but they were all singles and, more importantly, she did not give up any free passes. She only faced 3 over the limit as she was helped out by 2 double plays and the game ended when Lauren threw out a Memphis runner trying to socre from 2nd on a single (although that was very close and could have gone either way). Keeping the ball in the ballpark tonight was no easy task as the wind was howling, to put it mildly, out of the south.

                Saturday Game

Memphis scores and unearned run off of Alison Cooper in the to of the first on a 2-out error by Zoe Jones, a walk and a single.

The Shocks quickly forged into the leading putting up a 5 spot in the 1st capped by a 2-run home by Lolo and a 3-spot in the 2nd on a 3-run jack to center by some farm girl from Nebraska. Shocks lead 8-1 after 2 innings. Lolo's homer was a laser that skimmed off the top of the fence in right center. In fact, their was a bird sitting on the fence where the ball exited. I don't think it survived. Addie's home run was a no doubter to straight away center with the center fielder barely moving.

After breaking her own single season home run record on Friday, Addie has not broken her own single season record for RBI's as she now has 62 on the season vs 61 she drive in last year.

In the top of the 3rd we got a something you don't see often moment (no not another bird knocked off the fence).from Memphis. The first 3 batters went sharp single to left moving to 2nd on a wild pitch, a double to the base of the wall in center and double off the upper half of the wall in center without Memphis scoring a run. After the lead off runner reached second the next batter drove a ball to center with the runner on 2nd not sure if Lauren would get to the ball a looked like she was going back to the bag to tag up. But the ball did just bet over Lauren who quickly fielded the carom, relayed ot Zoe who threw home to get the runner trying to score from second. No doubt about that call she was clearly out. The next batter hit the ball even hard to center over Lauren's head with it hitting about 15" from the top of the wall. The runner on second, who had a heavy knee brace on her right leg again had to wait to see if Laruen might get to the ball and agin Lauren played the carom perfectly and got the ball back into Zoe quickly with the runner only advancing to 3rd. Sydney fielded a bouncer to short and was able to hold the runners before throwing out the hitter at first. Alison then got a strike out on a nice change up (although it may have been a questionable called strike) to somehow escape the inning without giving up a run.

In the bottom half of the 3rd Lolo launched an 0-2 pitch over the right center field wall for her 2nd home run of the day. After Laine ground out to 2nd, Wylie lined a double the wall in right center, Sydney then hit a fly ball to left center that managed to escape the reach of the left field to drop on the warning track for an RBI double (definitely a wind aided double), Addie line a double into the left field corner scoring Sydney as the Shock extend their lead to 11-1 after 3 innigns.

In the bottom of the 4th Alison gives up a lead off walk. Sydney came up just short of a shoestring catch but was able to throw to Sydney at 2nd from her knees with Sydney making a great stretch and pick (of a short hop I think) for the force out. After a ground out moved the runner to 2nd a bunt single put runners at the corners. Neleigh misplayed a little squibber right at her and after not bobbling the ball she kicked it. Neleigh and the runner collided and looks like Neliegh caught a knee on the shin right below her left knee. A double into the right field corner makes it 3-11. After waling the next batter to load the basis HCKA pulls Alison with Erin McDonald coming on in relief. Erin gets a strike out on 4 pitches to leave the bases loaded. None of the 3 runs allowed by Alison were earned.

Neleigh starts off the Shocker 4th with a shaply hit single through the 4-3 hole into right. Jessica follows with a home run to just left of center to push the Shocker lead back to 10 at 13-3. After Lolo flied out to right Lainee Brown then pretty much carbon copies Jessica's home run to make it 14-3.

In the 5th, a 1 out error by Sydney gives Memphis a runner but then on the next batter Sydney makes a nice backhand stab of a groundball to start a 6-4-3 game ending double play as the Shocks win a 2nd staring 5 inning run-rule game over Memphis.

                Memphis 3-7-1
                Shockers 14-15-3

Not sure HCKA will be wild about the 3 errors otherwise pretty much a rocking chair win for 313th career win as Shocker head coach tying her for #1 all-time with Jim Maynard.

UCF beat Houston on Friday 4-1 but had to go 8 innings to get 'er done.

                  UCF beats Houston today 5-1.

                    Sunday Game

Same recent lineup for the Shockers with Erin in the circle. Hilderbrand is the starter for Memphis.

And that is the extent of my contributions today. :(

Erin cruises through the top of the 1st.

Sydney beats out a grounder fielded cleanly by the 2nd baseman going to her left. I don't know that I would say Sydney has blazing speed but she is quick and she is at top end speed in 2 steps from the left side of the plate.

Addie then crushes a blast to left into a 15 mph wind that was a no doubter easily clearing the scoreboard. That ball got out of the park in a hurry.

My biggest concern about Addie is she is going to put on some weight eating an excessive amount of Hi-Chews. She must be addicted to those.

Lauren Lucas who is doing a tremendous job protecting Addie since moving into the 3rd spot in the order lined a double of the wall in dead center for a double.

Zoe Jones walks. Memphis making a pitching change. Mikayla Hoshak, who started Friday's game,on to pitch for Memphis.

Neleigh with a sharp single to right through the 3-4 hole drives in Lauren and send Zoe to 3rd.

Jessica walks to load the bases.

Lolo then blooped a ball that land just fair in left and took a left turn away form the left fielder. Zoe and Neleigh score gut Jessica thrown out at 3rd base.

Lainee grounds out to 3rd and Wylie pops up to the pitcher.

But the Shocks are off to the races again as they take 5-0 lead after 1 inning.

Some aircraft company needs to offer Sydney and Addie a NIL like right now.

Erin has another 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd although of the Memphis outs where solidly hit balls that Wylie caught in left field.

Speaking of off to the races. With 1-out in the Shocker 2nd Addie lifted a high fly ball to right field. With the win pushing the ball towards the right field corner the rightfielder got bit turned around and as unable to get a glove on the ball which caromed off the white stripe at the top of the fence. To Addie's credit she wasn't spectating and sped around the bases beating the throw to the plate for a inside-the-park home run. Why not.

Lauren laces a line drive right over the pitchers head and then stole second. However, Zoe struck out and Nelieigh popped out to short to end the Shocker at bat.

                            Shocks lead 6-0 after 2.

No hits or runs for Memphis in the 3rd but not a real clean inning for Erin. Walk, strikeout, stirkeout, wild pitch, walk, fly out to the edge fo the waring track in center.

Jessica ripped a single past the 3rd baseman down the line. Lolo popped out to the pitcher and Lainee then hit a little oft flaire to the 2nd baseman but Jessica was able to scramble back to 1st.

Wylie with a left on left match, worked the count to 3-1 and then laced a ball over the fence right at the right field fair pole. Memphis questioned the call and it was very close but the call reamined after the 3 umps conferred. The Shockers are up 8-0 and have put the possibility of another the run-rule in place.
