SFA goes 3-0 on the weekend. They were 28-6 last season and return a lot. With their schedule, they could have a gaudy record when they meet the Shocks on September 14. 10-2 is not out of the question.

      Howard moved to 2-0 beating George Mason (22) 22 16 21

That adds a bit of spit and polish the Shocks win over JMU. JMU also cruised past Delaware State this morning to move to 3-1 on the season.

VCU falls to 0-2 losing in straight sets to Washington State 13, 22 and 18.

West Virginia loses to WSU (Wright State) in 4 sets today. 20-25, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25

After sweeping Duke yesterday BYU beat them again today in 4 sets. (16), 19, 22 and 17.

Iowa State beat Virginia at home earlier today in 4 sets -- 18, (24), 12 and 19 and lost a tough 5 setter to Oregon State tonight 25-27, 19-25, 26-24, 25-18 and 14-16.

North Texas picks up its 3rd sweep of the weekend this time over Kent State 17, 17 and 14. They had no difficulty whatsoever dispatching Nicholls State, Northeastern and Kent State this weekend.

Cal Poly swept Butler 16, 16 and 18 tonight in Pittsburgh to go to 2-1.

Creighton lost a battle royal to USC late Saturday on the West coast. 26-28, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 and 16-18.

The difference might have been in Set 1 when Creighton lead 24-22 but could not close out the set.

Looks like the Bluejays are very good again this year despite a 1-2 start.

The set 1 collapse, featuring two badly missed SE’s, was indeed the difference in the end. To be fair, the Jays showed fortitude in coming back from large deficits to win set 2 and have a chance at the end of set 5, when the teams were tied at every point from 12 through 16.

James Madison goes 2-1 in San Marcos, TX this weekend to move to 5-2 on the season with wins over Incarnate Word (3-0) and Abilene Christian (3-1) and a loss to host Texas State losing pretty bad (14 and 12) in sets 1 and 2.

Howard also traveled to Texas this weekend and came away with 3 wins in Beaumont, TX over Texas Southern (3-0), host Lamar University (3-1) and Southern University (3-1). Howard also moves to 5-2 on the season.

VCU lost a 5-setter to Seton Hall on Friday before getting its 1st win of the seaon today with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma. However, VCU was no match for #14 Pitt who swept the Rams 16, 20 and 11 this afternoon. These matches were played at Seton Hall. VCU drops to 1-5 on the season. They lost 3 games all of last year

West Virginia has lost to #9 BYU and the Shockers this weekend in Provo and play #1 Stanford starting shortly. I think we know how that will most likely go. WVU currently at 2-3 on the season. Stanford is sitting at 3-1 after their win over the Shocks earlier today. BYU is 4-0 heading into the match with the Shocks tonight.

RV#27 Iowa State picked up a good win over #17 Northern Iowa on Wednesday oin Cedar Falls then headed to Missoula, Montana this weekend and picked up wins over Gonzaga (3-1 in a competitve match after an easy 1st set win), host Montana (3-0) before getting swept by #22 Utah 22, 21 and 17. Iowa State moves to 5-2 on the season.

#15 Creighton picked up 3 sweeps at SMU this weekend with wins over Arkansas State, North Carolina State and host SMU. SMU was the tightest of the 3 matches at 25, 24 and 21. Creighton is now 4-2.

Stephen F. Austin playing 3 at Colgate University this weekend. They lost to Princeton (0-3) and Northwestern (1-3) with a game on tap against host Colgate this evening. SFA is now at 3-2 on the season.

North Texas is at Pepperdine this weekend. The were swept by Cal State - Northridge in their 1st match to go to 3-2 on the season. They have a match later this evening vs host Pepperdine and play Idaho tomorrow.

#24 Cal Poly picked up 3 wins this weekned at Utah State winning a 5-set match over Loyola Marymount and sweeping Utah Rio Grande Valley and host Utah State to go to 5-1 on the season.

That puts the Shocks non-con opponents at a solid 64.5% winning percentage with 6 matches remaining this weekend.

                  Sunday morning update:

Stephen F. Austin beat Colgate 3-1 to mover to 4-2 on the season.

North Texas was swept by Pepperdine (12, 18, 22) to fall to 3-3.
Of course, Stanford beat WVU and BYU best the Shockers on Saturday.

                  Final weekend update:

North Texas is vanalized by Idaho in straight sets (22,18, 22) as the Not So Mean Green fall to 3-4 on the season. North Texas has a pretty tough non-con schedule and they are probably looking at going around 5-10 in the non-con. Hopefully, they will make hay in the CUSA conference season.

So our non-con opponents finish up the 2nd week of the season a collective 43-25 for a 63.2% winning percentage. IIRC that is right at Lambo's target winning percentage for his non-con opponents.

If I remember correctly, Texas State has a transfer from Florida, maybe their setter, that played, a lot, when they went to the Final 4.

As long as Cal Poly has the Van Winden sisters, Adlee a 6-1 senior OH and Torrey, a 6-3 junior OH,, they will be tough. Torrey especially is a stud.
Torrey had 18 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces and 3 block assists on Thursday and 26 kills, 8 digs, 1 ace and 4 block assists on Friday.. Adlee added 12 kills and 14 digs on Thursday and 13 kills and 7 digs on Friday..

James Madison is in Baltimore this weekend. They picked up two 4-set wins on Friday over Loyola (MD) and host UMBC to move to 7-2 on the year. They play Robert Morris today and looks like they are on their way to a sweep in that match. Update: JMU did finish of the sweep of Robert Morris 15, 16 and 21 to move their season record to 8-2.

Howard is in New Jersey this weekend. They were swept by host Rutgers 30-32, 17-25 and 25-27 and lost in 4 sets to Navy. They played fellow AAC member Tulane this morning and the Green Wave has just completed dismantling the Bison in a 13, 16 and 13 sweep as Howard falls to 5-5 on the year.

VCU picked up a 3-1 home win over Georgetown on Tuesday and are playing in Tallahassee this weekend. On Friday they swept 12,17 and 16 by host Florida Stated to fall to 2-6 on the season. They play Florida A&M and Southern Miss today. Update: VCU lost set 1 to winless Florida A&M but won the next 3 to pick up a win and then came back this afternoon to sweep Southern Miss.to improve to 4-6 on the season.

West Virginia is in Ft. Myers, Florida this weekend. The swept Western Illinois on Friday to move to 3-4 on the season. They play Albany and host Florida Gulf Coast today. Update: West Virginia failed to show against Albany today and were swept 16, 15 and 21. West Virginia gets dominated statistically in the match but pulls out a 3-2 win over FGCU to move to 4-5 on the season. More on this match in a separate post.

#4 Stanford is playing at home this weekend. They picked up a 23, 20 and 20 sweep over #5 Penn State to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Cardinal plays #1 Minnesota on Sunday. To finish off their non-con season Stanford hosts #6 Texas on Tuesday and then travel to Austin to plays the Longhorns again on Friday.

#3 BYU is in Milwaukee this weekend and they continue to roll with sweeps over #10 USC (28, 21 and 14) and Syracuse (23, 20 and 20) on Friday to move to 7-0 on the season. BYU plays host #25 Marquette this evening. Marquette picked up a 5-set win over Southern Cal on Friday evening. BYU knocked off a game Marquette squad 3-1. Marquette won set 1 25-23. BYU took the 2nd set 25-22. With BYU up 19-18 in Set 3 a Marquette attack error followed by 2 BYU service aces made it 22-18 and BYU closed out the set at 25-20 and then rolled to a 25-14 win in set 4 to close out the match. BYU moves to 8-0.

As previously reported #14 Creighton bounced back from their 5-set loss to #7 Nebraska to knock of Iowa State in 4 sets on Friday evening. Creighton moves to 5-3 on the year and Iowa State falls to 5-3. Update: Iowa State moves to 6-3 with their 5 set win over the Shocks.

Stephen F. Austin is hosting a 4 team tournament this weekend. SFA picked up wins over Tennessee State (3-1) and St. John's (3-0) on Friday to mover to 7-2 on the year. They play Stetson and Grambling State today. Update: SFA beat Stetson in 4 sets and swept Grambling State. They move to 9-2.

North Texas is at Kansas State this weekend. They were swept by K-State and lost in 4 sets to Nebraska-Omaha on Friday to extend their losing streak to 6 matches after opening with 3 wins. They play RV#34 Oregon State today. Update: North Texas swept by Oregon State to fall to 3-7.

On Tuesday North Texas hosts #2 Wisconsin before finishing their pre-con schedule next weekend hosting Mississippi State, Wichita State, Stehpen F. Austin and Cal Poly. A 12 match losing streak heading into CUSA play is a definite possibility for the Mean Green.

As previously reported #22 Cal Poly picked up two big home wins over #9 UCLA this weekend to move to 7-1 on the year. Look for Cal Poly to move into the Top 20 on Monday.

With the Stanford-Minnesota match and the Shockers match with Creighton the only matches on Sunday the Shocker's non-con opponents are at 64-35. 64.6%. That is certainly acceptable considering North Texas has been struggling and looks like they will continue to struggle in pre-conference play. Hopefully, they will be able to recover some ground in the CUSA season.
