Maybe so, all I know is that Paul S on the radio connected the tarp removal to VB ticket sales. Yeah, maybe both is good.

Surely, the Shocker pep band will be there for the Shocker matches. I will be very interested to see if the WSU students will turn out in any significant numbers. That would be a first time in history thing too.

Another program first is that GoShockers.com has a Countdown clock for Friday's WSU-Radford match when you open the website.

I will be disappointed AND surprised if the pep band is absent. I will be disappointed but NOT surprised by a dismal student turnout.

one thing I wonder if we do get a large student representation is will the be in a student section or dispersed throughout the Roundhouse since everything is GA. Having them scattered would diminish the impact I would think.

I used to go to a few matches a year when I was a student. Once I figured out there wasn't a defined student section I just sat wherever I felt like that day.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

I guess that's not bad for advance tickets as I imagine most people walk up on game nights for volleyball.

I imagine the atmosphere will be much different.

That's so terribly disappointing to me. I'm not sure we really deserve a program like Shocker Volleyball and the Lamb's have provided us. :(

It also happens to be the first night of HS basketball. That probably isn't helping out.

Say what you will, Doc, but it is hardly "Mid Major". Only 3 first round regionals in 2016 had more than 5,000 per round, 2 of those 10,808 and the other 11,081 combined for R1 and R2. #4 in attendance for R1 and R2 combined was 5,092.

Do I wish we'd pack the joint with all-session tickets? Absolutely. Do I think people are missing the boat with supporting Lambo and the girls? Absolutely. Do I think we have some bandwagon Shocker fans who only care about men's basketball and baseball when the teams are good and won't consider venturing out to support some of the other solid teams at WSU? Absolutely.

HOWEVER, let me give some perspective. I saw a stat from an article in 2012 when WSU won at Allen Fieldhouse, that site had 8,029 fans over the weekend, which was the second-highest attendance behind Nebraska. The next year, also in AFH, had similar numbers...maybe a pinch less. Since 2015, KU has used their VB-specific arena for NCAA hosting.

With 4,200 all-session tickets already, we are ALREADY at 8,400 for the weekend. That isn't counting tickets sold during business hours today or walkup crowd.

It is possible that people can only go one of the two nights and will just buy single-session tickets. I feel pretty encouraged that they are expecting 5,000 tonight for a "non-marquee opponent." I am also excited to see what happens tomorrow night, especially if the ladies can play KU. Will it be PACKED? Unfortunately no, but relative to the rest of the country, it should be amazing.

Maybe a little disappointing but you and I proabably aren't the best barometers Doc. I agree with the other comments though that it isn't really Mid-Majorish at least on a relative basis. Volleyball while growing in popularity is still a minor sport for just about all D-1 programs with maybe a couple of exceptions.

You simply aren't going to get many of the upper crust supporters who have the prime seats at Shocker MBB to come out to a general admission event without their prime reserved seats and their nearby reserved parking. And even if you had that not sure how many would be interested. This will generally be a working man's crowd.

There is also a significant portion of the fan base that simply have no interest in anything outside of Shocker MBB (and perhaps in the old days Shocker baseball). But that is really not all that different from most D-1 programs. It's football and/or men's basketball and the only reason you have the other stuff is to meet the requirements of D-1 membership and Title IX.

What has disappointed me in the past is the total lack of support by the WSU student body. I hope that changes this weekend. We could certainly use the energy and enthusiasm that the students bring when they do show up.

I think 5,000 for Friday night and if we get WSU-KU match on Saturday maybe 6,000 or so would be pretty much in line with my expectations and a good showing by Shocker fans.

My hope is that the Shockers play well and perhaps reel in a good number of new regular fans.

As far as the student support issue goes I think having an actual student section would help. The way it is now whatever students show up are scattered throughout the building.

Having said that and at the risk of derailing this thread the student body can't even fill up the student section for BB so getting much interest in VB is probably a pipe dream.

There are not that many students spread out throughout the arena other than the members of the other sprorts teams that show up. That's an excuse with not substance IMO. Shocker Maniacs have tried numerous times, unsuccessfully, to generate an organized student turnout. But I think you are right that getting much student support for volleyball doesn't seem to be in the cards. If it hasn't happened at this point it probalby is not going to happen.

BTW, not asking are expecting a big student turnout. A group of 100 would be very nice.
