  • Shocks Head to Sunny Florida This Weekend

The Shocks open up the 2nd half of the AAC Conference season with a well-timed trip to Florida considering Wichita is expecting its first freeze of the Fall this weekend. The Shocks take on UCF in Orlando on Friday at 6:00 pm CT. Video is available for $5.99 on KnightsTV.com (see match notes below for link). The Shocks then move over to Tampa for a mtach with USF on Sunday at 11:00 am CT. Video is available on BullsVision for $6.95 (again see match notes below for link).

Some lucky and might I say very generous Shocker supporter will join the team on this trip as a result of "winning" the live auction bid at the Volleyball 101 Dinner. Shoudl be a great experience. However, I hope he/she read the fine print. If the Shocks lose they get left behind. But I suppose being abandoned in Orlando or Tampa is a bit better then being marooned in Terre Haute or Cedar Falls. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

UCF gave the Shocks an interesting match in Wichita winning the 1st set 25-21 and losing the 2nd set 20-25 when the Shocks broke out of an 18-all tie by winning 7 of the final 9 points. The Shocks then cruised to 25-12 and 25-15 wins in Sets 3 and 4 to close out the match. IIRC UCF has some pretty impressive athletes most notably 5-11 RSr OH Kia Briight.

The Shocks handled USF in Wichita with relative ease with a 15, 17 and 10 sweep.

    Scouting UCF
The Knights are 11 overall and 4-6 in The American. Wins this season have come against Northern Colorado, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Central Arkansas, Southern, Virginia twice, ECU, Memphis, UConn and Tulane. Losses have come against Duke, Colorado State, Miami, Oral Roberts, Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Wichita State, Tulsa, SMU, Temple and Houston. UCF is led by Kia Bright who is averaging 3.72 kills per set. Erin Olson averages 5.82 assists and Jordan Pingel averages 4.21 digs per set. As a team, the Knights are hitting .229, while holding opponents to a .198 clip. UCF is led by head coach Todd Dagenais.

    Scouting USF
The Bulls are 8-12 overall and 3-7 in The American. Wins this season have come against UAPB, Grambling, Presbyterian, Jacksonville, Bethune-Cookman, Memphis, Tulsa and Tulane. Losses have come against Northwestern, LSU, Stephen F. Austin, Mississippi State, Austin Peay, Cincinnati, ECU, Wichita State, SMU, Temple, UConn and Houston. USF is led by Doris Carter who is averaging 2.63 kills per set. Alex Mendoza averages 9.82 assists and Maria McLamb averages 3.99 digs per set. As a team, the Bulls are hitting .190, while holding opponents to a .211 clip. USF is led by head coach Courtney Draper.
WICHITA, Kan. -  Wichita State travels to Florida for two American Athletic Conference matches this weekend. The Shockers play at UCF on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. CT and at USF on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. CT.

      Pre-match

Emma Wright is still in concussion protocol and did not make the trip. Brooke Smith and Abby Pugh are the middles in her spot. Who matches up best with the opposition will determine playing time with Brooke getting the start.

UCF, based on stats, is more dangerous than their record (4-6 in conference) would indicate.

        Set 1

UCF builds a 3-6 lead (Shocker score first). A series of sideouts makes the score 8-11 before UCF scored a couple of more to get to 8-13.

Another series of sideouts makes it 11-16. Two points by the Shocks followed by two by UCF brings the score to 13-18 and to a Shocker timeout.

        .272 v .450 at this point.

Just 16-19 but UCF takes a timeout.

18-23 and Tabitha gets three consecutive points (21-23) and UCF takes their second timeout.

An exchange of blocks and a kill by Mikaela brings the margin to one, but UCF gets a kill to win the set.

        Shockers 23-25 UCF

        .324 v .382

          Set 2

Shockers jump to an early 5-1 lead. At 9-4, UCF takes a timeout.

Gradually, the Shocks lengthen the lead to 18-9 and the Knights take their last timeout.

Shockers methodically finish off the set.

          Shockers 25-14 UCF

          For the set, .432 v .184

          On the match, .378 v .278. Tabitha is 11-2-18 for .500.

            Set 3

Shocks lead by two very early and UCF lead by two a bit later.

The first three point lead is 11-14 (from 11-11), and the Shocks take a timeout.

It doesn't get any better. At 14-20, the Shockers take their second timeout.

            Ouch!!

            Shockers 17-25 UCF
