  • Stephen Rogers, Mesa CC

In Lutz's article today, he quoted Hatch's comments about a freshman at Mesa Community College who "lit up" Hatch over Christmas break. Here is some information.

    Sounds like a player.

Rogers is a 6-8 Freshman G/F at Mesa CC. Averaging 21 ppg, 6 rpg, and 1 apg. 81% FT, 47% FG, and 35% 3FG. Dude sounds alot like what he were hoping for from Johnny Coy!

If he was a high school senior in 2006, he probably went on a Mormon mission, yes? That makes him a mature kid, and also probably a high school qualifier, which would mean he could transfer here this summer without getting a juco degree.

That appears to be the case from the BYU Scout article. Headlines include "AZ Big man has different mission." He was being recruited by BYU. Yes, he is probably a 20 year old freshman qualifier. The bio reads "face-up PF who can shoot it from the perimeter."

"BYU shows recruiting interest in a young center from Mesa, Ariz"

I'm not sure just what position he plays -- SF, PF, C. One thing I noticed about his stats, however, is that he's a turnover waiting to happen. In 14 games, he has 50. Compare that to Murry, who has the most on the Shox, at 35 in 17 games or Durley at 31.

After his mission, he went to Arizona State and redshirted. He is now a redshirt freshman at Mesa averaging around 20 a game. He has three years of eligibility left and sounds like he will move on to D-1 next year. From the above article which was written in early November he was being recruited by BYU (again), Boise State, Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona. He says he would like to play in the WCC, Mountain West or WAC and feels that level would be good for him to continue success.

I would put the MVC on a par with those conferences. Obviously we are a little further from home.

Seems to be a similar player to Micah Downs who was a pretty good player.

If that's correct, that puts him in at 20 pounds LESS than Ellis or Felter, and 40 pounds less then Blair.

Wish we had more info on him. We know he shoots the 3 well, but as a SF is he quick enough to defend that position? That was going to be Coy's problem. I don't know how big Kyle Wilson was when he first came, but he, too, was listed at 235 lb beginning his senior year.

This added to his TO problems keeps me from getting to exicted at this time.
