I like his attitude, especially that part about working to bring a national championship to his current school. I like guys who aim high. Bring that same attitude to Wichita Mr. Smith. Glad to have you as part of Shocker Nation.
    Go Shocks!

The other thing Aargh failed to point out in his quest to remain skeptical for the sake of being skeptical is that none of those three were juco players who should be ready to go from Day One.

And no, Aargh -- Tevin Glass isn't analogous: he was a last second flyer to fill an open spot, not a recruit offered a month before the November signing period.

JuCo guys are ready to go from Day 1? Early is in the NBA. He wasn't ready to go from Day 1. Early was Player of the Year as a Juco Fr. Smith was all-conference honorable mention as a Fr.

Tevin Glass was a last minute add. Check out the recruiting forum for that time period and you will see that the coaching staff was recruiting about every big in JuCo or HS and ended up with Glass at the last minute because every other big signed with someone else.

It generally takes JuCo guys half a season before they show what they can do and it's usually in their second year that they are major contributors. None of the JuCo AA's that Marshall has historically signed have been Day 1 players.

Marshall's recruiting is not infallible. That's not bad-mouthing Marshall. No D1 coach's recruiting is infallible. If 75% of Marshall's recruits work out, that's all he needs. That means that we should be prepared for 1/4 of his recruits to prefer other opportunities after a year or 2 in Wichita.

Fair enough, Aargh -- ready from Day One is an overstatement of preparedness for juco players, and you examples of Early is a good one. What I should have doine was compare the readiness of juco players coming in to that of high schoolers, and there (assuming a player comes from the right program where he's had some actual coaching along the way), I believe there's little doubt that the two years of juco experience are worthwhile.

I have little doubt that Smith will arrive far more ready to Play Angry (and soon) that Holland or Henderson did. Where we go from there, we'll just have to see.

To support the half a season comment and 2nd year being major contributors I provide:

Evidence 1.a: Joe Ragland - Toure had to run the point for the first half of the season.

Evidence 1.b: Cleanthony Early - lots of JUCO in him, took a while to play within the system effectively.

Evidence 1.c: Chadrack Lufile - non-existent jr year, reliable and effective cog in a 3 man post rotation Sr. year.

As a generality, If a JUCO player played for an excellent program, and is a top 50 type player, then in said players senior year, you can expect production similar to that players freshman year.

Basically, if you want to know a JUCO players ceiling, look at their freshman stats.

                    • I have to think Marshall saw something in Smith that indicates his Fr stats are an anomaly.

8, 3, and 3 would not be a player I would turn away.

                        • One should always remember that there are other ways to contribute to a team 's success besides scoring.

FVV will have more assists opportunities than ever this Season and won't need to score as much as so at the end of the year last Season.

Been thinking the same thing. Let's hope we're nails and have, in fact, great minds that think alike.
