To me the reality is that both guys have done a terrific job at their respective schools and both have shown a great deal of loyalty to their respective schools. I have no idea whether I would personally like Shaka or not. Chances are I would.
The comment got me going a little bit because I don't look at Shaka and think "I just don't see how anyone could possibly play for him instead of Gregg" even though I am all in on HCGM. For a fan to say that about another coach is pretty weird to me, especially when it's about HCGM, who is a really stand up guy and has done little to rub anyone the wrong way (unless the other person is just being sensitive). I actually don't have any reason to dislike Shaka other than perceived smugness, but even that is pretty small of a reason. Why would someone ever say they can't believe anyone would choose a Gregg over Shaka? It's the kind of comment that deserves to get roasted.

I don't think it's that uncommon for a rival fan base to dislike Gregg.

Are you being sarcastic? If so ignore the rest of my post. That being said, I think you are the one being sensitive. That poster doesn't deserve to get roasted, because that poster is posting on his own message board. I clicked that link and thought nothing of their comments. They seemed fairly subdued.

          seems understated

          • It's not unusual for a fan base to dislike a coach that beats their ass on a regular basis.

            Just sayin'.

I wish we had a yearly series with VCU (perhaps CU as well). Would be nice to have an actual "rival" these days.

              • Agreed about the tone, kochHead. I look at other boards so rarely that I don't really have much sense of how rabid they are or aren't, but based on the message accompanying the link posted on here I was expecting far more anti-WSU / anti-Marshall sentiment than I saw.

                • A friend of mine's son goes to VCU. He is proud of their MBB team and rightfully so. Shaka is a great coach and his kids represent their school well. They're a lot like WSU in that they are an urban school and MBB is the top sport on campus. I think it would be a great rivalry to play them every year.

I also looked at their message board and did not note anything particularly outrageous. Just passionate fans, just like the ones we have here.

Weird, I didn't FEEL sensitive when I posted that. :)

Maybe a better way to say it is that:
                    1. I respect Shaka, and I don't look at him and think "how could anyone possibly want to play for him." No, I look at him and think "He's a guy you would want to play for." I think Gregg deserves that as well.
                    2. It seems weird to me to look at a guy like Gregg and think that because he is a stand up coach who wins at the highest level. If someone only doesn't like him because he is a winner, there isn't much there.
                    3. Who is a coach who I would think "how can anyone possibly want to play for him?" hmmm. It's actually a hard question for me. I would lean towards coaches that seem shady. Well, if VCU thinks Gregg is shady because he out recruited them for Carl Hall, that would explain it. Does that not seem a little lame, though?

These are two fairly similar coaches and programs. Both deserve respect. If you look at our board, I don't think people say anything other than "I like VCU and want them on the schedule." oh well.

That's kind of where I was coming from. Fair enough on the "back off, it's their own message board and it's all fairly tame" comment, though. I can agree with that. It probably is stupid for me to care what anyone thinks of Marshall.

                        • I guess I didn't mean to imply there was total outrage, but just some bitterness. (I'm sure we can all be guilty of that)

Speaking of bitterness, I wonder what a handshake between 3Gs and Shaka would look like today??

I would like to see the classic vise-grip style handshake with lots of direct eye-contact. First one to blink or let go loses. Actually, that's a terrible idea because we might be there all night, and I want to go home after a win that satisfying.

I assume we'll never know, since they now must use the super-secret F4 club handshake and can only do so out of the public view. Marshall and Smart rub each other's fan bases the wrong way. But that is probably because they are pretty similar in a lot of ways.

I agree. Another similarity. Look at how they have done at their so-called non-major programs compared to how the guys they replaced have fared since then at so-called major programs.
