  • 9 Years of Recruits

2006-2007 – Chris Brown, Arbry Butler, J.T. Durley, Gal Mekel - J.T. had good career and Gal gave us some help and is now in the NBA

2007-2008 – Ramon Clemente, Aaron Ellis, Mantas Griskenas, A.J. Hawkins, Gabe Blair (transfer sit out), Graham Hatch, Denzel Bowles (released), Guy Alang Ntang (died), Evann Baker (released) - Also the other JC Transfer who backed out and moved on to Illinois State. Coach Marshall grabbed Ramon and Graham, (originally Turgeon recruits), and signed Aaron, Mantas, A.J. and Gabe late. Aaron, Gabe and Graham were part of the NIT Championship team (Graham was the NIT MVP).

2008-2009 - Reggie Chamberlain, Johnny Coy (dropped basketball for baseball), Clevin Hannah, David Kyles, Toure Murry, Garrett Stutz. Clevin, David, Toure and Garret were very successful for the Shox. Toure is in the NBA. Included among these players were an NIT championship and an NCAA Tournament.

2009-2010 – Jerome Hamilton, Kenny Manigault, Tyler Richardson, Demetric Williams. Demetric was extremely successful at WSU during an NIT championship, and 2 NCAA Tournaments including a Final Four. Saw Jerome recently at a WSU Ladies basketball game.

2010-2011 – Ehimen Orukpe, Joe Ragland, Ben Smith. (not many, but very successful. An NIT championship and 2 NCAA Tournaments including a Final Four among them.

2011-2012 – James Anacreon, Malcolm Armstead, Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton, Carl Hall, Evan Wessel, Jake White. Malcolm, Ron, Tekele, Carl, and Jake played in the Final Four.

2012-2013 – Kadeem Coleby, Cleanthony Early, Derail Green, Chadrack Lufile, Fred Van Vleet, Nick Wiggins, Henry Uwadiae (did not qualify), Deontee Hawkins (did not qualify). Cleanthony, Chadrack, Fred, Nick all played in the Final Four.

2013-2014 – D.J. Bowles, Darius Carter, Ria’n Holland, Shaquille Morris. D.J. will not play due to health issues. Ria'n and Shaquille are redshirts.

2014-2015 – Zach Brown, Corey Henderson, Rashard Kelly, Bush Wamukota, Eric Hamilton

How would you rank these classes? I love the 2008-2009 class with Clevin, David, Toure and Garrett. 2007-2008 was pretty amazing considering those who left, Guy who died, and the fact that Coach Marshall had to come up with players so late. His late recruits of Aaron and Gabe were especially helpful and Ramon and Graham staying after committing to Coach Turgeon were very helpful as well. Thankfully we got Demetric out of the 2009-2010 class. The 2010-2011 class was special. How about the great class of 2011-2012. 2012-2013 might be the best of all so far, but we still need to see about the 2013-2014 and I would not be surprised to see the 2014-2015 class among the very best. Probably the rightest ranked group of all time for WSU.

    I'm excited. How about you?

There are a LOT of high majors who would like to have our recruiting class.

Tough to separate as recruiting has been consistently good, but I'll rank in reverse order (13-14 and 14-15 classes excluded due to too small of a sample size).

      7. 09-10 (Demetric Williams as 4 year role player)
      6. 07-08 (Ellis, Blair, Hatch all role players, Clemente was a good player on a bad team)
      5. 06-07 (Mekel was very good, but left before making a major impact. Durley was a star as a senior).
      4. 10-11 (Orukpe and Smith were role players on good teams. Ragland was a star for 1 year. No frosh).
      3. 12-13 (Coleby, Lufile, and Wiggins are all role players. Early and VanVleet equal STUD!)
      2. 08-09 (Hannah, Murry, and Stutz were all studs! Kyles was a 4 year role player.)
      1. 11-12 (Armstead and Hall were studs for one year. Baker will be a 4 year stud. Cotton is a role player but might blossom. Wessel is a role player. White was a role player.)

Not bad when your worst-rated recruiting class of the past 7 years includes an on-again, off-again starter that leads the program in All-Time Wins, has an NIT Championship Ring, a league Championship Ring and a Final Four Ring.

And the only reason that class was iffy was because who's thinking they're getting playing time for 3 years with those guys around?

If"role"= "team"anddoes not exclude "extremely valuable", then okay. If not, then I DISAGREE. Cotton is a STUD, who does not necessarily look to fill the stat sheet.

I agree. To add, I believe he fills the stat sheet just fine. 4th in ppg, 3rd in apg, 3rd in spg, 3rd in mpg, and among the non-post players (4/5), 2nd in rpg. Now you can add his defense to the mix.

I'm with you, im4. Cotton is a "role player" the way a great actor who just doesn't happen to get top billing is a role player. I don't know if it will be in the NBA, at least at first -- he still has to continue developing his handles -- but Cotton is enough of a stud that as long as he stays healthy, he's going to make a bunch of money playing basketball somewhere, and for as long as he wants to.

I used my memory of post season accolades as my line between "role player" and "stud". I can't remember of Clemente made any all-conference teams. With VanVleet and Baker I extrapolated.

interesting breakdown. Goes to show how difficult it is to sign a full class of impact players. No doubt this incoming class is the best class so far, on paper. What a disappointment Kenny Manigault was.

That is so true. He looked so good in that game against that elite team when he was a senior. Just didn't move it to the next level. Hope he is doing well.

Kenny Manigault is on the roster of the University of Pikeville, an NAIA Division I school in Kentucky.

I looked at the box scores of the games they've played for far this year and he hasn't played in any of them.
