I think we land a big center for '14 before the signing period is over.

I didn't express myself very clearly.

If a coach never recruits higher-level players, then we don't run into the stories of their recruitment, and we never know about those players. When a coach recruits higher-level players, the chances of signing those players tend to be lower, and we do hear the stories of their recruitment.

Not going after those guys has the same result as not signing them - we don't have that player on the roster. The differences are that in one case, readers of this Forum are aware that we didn't get a certain recruit, but we were in consideration by that recruit. In the other case, we are not aware of the failure to land the player, never had a chance to sign that player, and are not likely to be aware of that player's existence.

If you want the upper-level players, you have to pursue them. That results in a lot of misses. If you only want to recruit guys that you have an 80 or 90% chance of signing, then you're going to be a permanent member of the Yhursday night club in St. Louis.

Missing out on some big time recruits is a good thing. You can't miss out on them if you're not trying to get them.

The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I find it a little surprising how many HS, JC, or AAU coaches will recommend Wichita State to one of his players. Most know though that we are a program on the rise, and our recent success also enters into it. I think our program probably surprised some of the recruits we had in with the facilities, coaches, etc.., and was better than they first thought it might be.

Two recent examples, I'm sure there are more: Demetric Williams was referred to the program by PJ Cousinard's dad, who had a nephew playing on DW's team. Derail Green was referred to WSU by Klein Forest Coach and TM's dad, both very familiar with Toure's success and the state of the WSU program.

The NIT championship and now the Final 4 has gotten us in doors and on "final" lists of recruits that would not give us the time of day a few years ago. Have another successful year or two and we will start landing them. Just takes time and lots of effort. It'll happen. Plus, Marshall is looking for a special type of player who are blue collar all the way. Doesn't matter how many stars are after the name. He isn't going to change who he is recruiting. Stay with what you know and what got you there. I am not saying he hasn't missed on some of his top targets. Only him and the staff know that. However he isn't going to sign a kid if he doesn't think they can help. We will be just fine as long as he is at the helm.
"He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!
