In the last two pages of the thread there were several names mentioned of guys that entered the transfer portal. More will follow.

I’ve said before I don’t think we need to find a world beater for the third center next year. Just a guy who is mobile, can block shots, set screens, and catch the ball and dunk it. If he's a decent FT shooter it’d be a plus.

I don’t have any specific names for you, sorry. I’m not involved in the recruiting so I have no idea who the staff is targeting or how likely they are to commit. Maybe we won’t find someone who fits that description. I think it’s more likely we will.

Michael "MJ" Cage, Jr. (6'10" / 235) has announced he is transferring from Pepperdine. 3/4* recruit in out of High School, started at Oregon, transferred to Pepperdine. Sit one (maybe) play one Big Man.

His Dad played at San Diego State and in the NBA and is an announcer for the OKC Thunder. It looks like he left the Pepperdine team last summer prior to the 19-20 season.

I suppose so. We keep reading that 3G is really high on Bilau but I would think they are keeping their powder dry for just the right guy at this point. Maybe it’s just us who think they need another 6’10” Big to roam the protect the front court.

I'm not even sure he had one post in 2007/2008. Thomasson at 6'7" played the 5 a lot and Durley was a freshman who was not ready. Of course the cupboard was pretty bare when Turgeon left. I remember Marshall telling his assistants to go recruit someone taller than he was.

That’s a great question. Looking back it seems to be more of a recent trend. For the most part, he usually only carried no more than two, true centers. And usually that was a fairly tall, traditional center ala Nurger at 6’10” or Bush/Stutz >7’ and the other guy being somewhere between 6’7 to 6’9”.

If you look at the FF team, he had no one above 6’9” Coleby, and Lufile was listed as a forward. The Durley/Stutz years were interesting in that you had a traditional big man who was spelled by a much shorter guy, in this case the 6’7” Durley.

The 2007-08 season he had no center listed on his roster and no one above 6’7”.

While I don’t want to go back to 2007, I think we can surmise that Gregg has always figured out a way to win a lot of games without three traditional centers on his roster.

Carl Hall (6'8)and Orupke(7'1) were our main Centers that year, and Lufile(6'9) occasionally backed them up if necessary. Lufile played in each of our NCAA games on the road to the F4 but only sparingly. Coleby sat out the F4 year because of his transfer. The 31-0 2013-14 year was when Coleby(6'9), Lufile(6'9), and Carter(6'7) all shared time fairly equally.

My bad! I honestly don’t know how I missed him. I looked at that roster twice just to make sure! Damn these old glasses...
