  • Recruiting Questions

How would this recruiting Class be rated thus far? Obviously, Carl Hall will be a keeper. However, we are loosing 3-bigs. Are Jake White, Evan Wessel and Tekele Cotton rated around top 350 type High School players or higher? Brandon Romain seemed to penetrate and pull up for smooth jumpers rather than bulldozing over folk. Would he be a player that could stop our opponents point guards from running their offense at will?

What do we need most for next Season? Shooting is a lost art and I hope we get some good shooters. We seem to need at least 1 more solid big. I am hoping we find room for about 2-3 more recruits. The following Season after next, we lose most of our guards. Discuss.

I think Hall and White have the potential to be good players.

I think Wessell and Cotton will need more time too develop.

I haven't put Romain on the roster yet, he hasn't signed anything yet.

Next year WSU loses potentially five seniors- Murry, Kyles, Stutz, Smith, and Ragland. That's a lot to lose.

It's also why when I feel crazy, that I wonder if next year's team will be better than this one.

I cannot envision any scenario in which next years team would be better.

I must be crazy too, because I have the same thought.

Next year's success will have more to do with whether some of our seniors will make a turnaround and whether all will mature and grow as players and a team.

I feel really good about Carl Hall (health aside) and what he'll bring to the team. I think White may be the first freshman to see regular minutes (15+) in a while. I don't have a clue how fast Cotton and Wessel may come along, but I'm fairly certain we're not done recruiting for next year.

Remember, MSU has done it this year with primarily 7 players,..... 4 seniors, 2 juniors, and a freshman. At this point. we'll have 5 seniors, 2 juniors, and probably a freshman seeing regular minutes.

As noted on another thread, I was thinking the Shocks will be picked about in the middle of the pack next Season in the Valley. We will have several Seniors that played several minutes returning. However it was the Freshman Odum that led to our demise yesterday. Obviously, we have not signed Romain but I was curious just how high he is ranked. I am thinking another big man, maybe a Juco player will be on our needs to sign as well? 2-3 more key recruits to reload may be quite helpful. 1-2 more could be probable?

If 3 more were open, another point guard to take over and start grooming for the position would be cool, because we lose most of our guards at the end of next Season.

I can't remember Romain's exact juco ranking. It was in the 120's I believe. The freshman recruits are not even close to top 300.

Me too. It has been mentioned in other threads before, but I think that our depth may have actually hurt us this year. Everyone tried to make the most out of their minutes and maybe tried to force things. Next year, the rotation should be more limited and I personally think it will he keep the starters (whoever they turn out to be) more focused and not worried about getting pulled from the game.

We return 6 players that started in one or more games. We have one of the top juco forwards in the country. We have a 7 footer that would have played significant minutes for almost everyone else. Nobody knows how good the freshman will be, could be they all will see limited minutes.

I, for one, am very hopeful about next years team. Every team is different. This year lacked something and has baffled me since the start of the year. Don't let disappointment from this year cloud your hope for next. Wait to see.

                    Odum

I don't pretend to be a scout, but considering that 6-4, 170-pound freshman Jake Odum came out of nowhere to be one of the Valley's most influential players this year, why are so many on here assuming that 6-5, 200-pound Evan Wessel, a good enough athlete to be a D-1 football prospect, with basketball training from childhood and a pedigree as long as your arm -- or more to the point, his arm -- can't be an important contributor for WSU next year?

Keep in mind that Odum was a redshirt freshman, but your point still stands.

I won't be surprised if Wessel contributes next year. I'm hoping to make it over to The Chuck to see Heights play this week.

I will be there all day and evening.

Want to watch the Kalinoski kid play from Olathe East. Not saying he is what we need, but he is the type of player that goes to a Valley school and torches us.

On his show last night Gregg said he would be recruiting in Oklahoma this week . Any ideas?

For 2011 there is of course Josh Richardson, but we maybe off his radar. There aren't any other 2011's from Oklahoma who we have talked about. However Stephen Keese, a 6-1 pg at Fort Gibson is starting to draw a lot of interest, including interest from Creighton. There's others low to mid majors still available in that State, but nothing else really stands out.

For 2012 we are recruiting Jake Bullard. Nino Jackson is the standout from Oklahoma for 2012.
