This was a very highly localized tax and the concern that it wouldn't go away was highly publicized. Further, most of the players involved were fiscal conservatives.

The state of Kansas has a democrat running the show, the tax is not nearly as localized, and there hasn't been squat in the news about any repercussions if it stays.

    End result: Hello permanent tax.

False. A slippery slope argument if there ever was one. If you could afford a $1,010 TV, then you can afford a $1,021 TV. And since you can afford a $1,021 TV, then you can afford a $1,032 TV . . . ad nauseam.

Taxes do have an impact on buying power. Most business owners can tell you that when taxes go up, they see it in their bottom line in terms of lower revenue.

Let's hope so. The overall track record doesn't bode well.

The arena tax, if even just at the local level, is a huge exception to the rule. And the Sedgwick County commissioners deserve some credit.

By the way, with this new sales tax, Kansas' rate is far and away higher than all of our neighbors.

      Colorado 2.9%
      Kansas 6.3%
      Missouri 4.225%
      Nebraska 5.5%
      Oklahoma 4.5%
      S. Dakota 4%

Just a note that Texas' rate is 6.25%, but they don't have an income tax.

      Neither does South Dakota.

Regardless, a sales tax for WSU football will never, ever happen.
I moved to Kansas in 1962. At that time, the politicians said that when the bonds, which financed the turnpike construction, were paid off, the turnpike toll would be discontinued.

It must have been a h*ll of a large bond issue. I paid a toll just last week.

And KS is hardly run by fiscal conservatives. It seems more often than not that the majority of republicans will follow the dems on a lot of these issues. Things are getting way out of hand at the federal level and the states are following.

        I blame the 17th amendment
Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan
        RIP Guy Always A Shocker
Carpenter Place - A blessing to many young girls/women
ICT S.O.S - Great local cause fighting against human trafficking
Wartick Insurance Agency - Saved me money with more coverage.
Save Shocker Sports - A rallying cry

I wish more of Kansas' roads were toll roads. It would save the state a lot of money each budget year.

I believe OKC has an additional 1 cent sales tax that goes exclusively for the brick town renovation.

Republicans completely control the Kansas Legislature. The only way this tax is made permanent is if they pass a new law making it so.

The House is something like 76-49 Republican and the Senate is 31-9 Republican. Also by the time the next session starts, Sam Brownback, a conservative Republican, will most likely be Governor.

I don't think this tax will be permanent.

Also, Ricky, I looked up some information on the Turnpike and I think they actually owe more on the bonds today than they did in 1962.

It doesn't look like they have tried very hard to pay them off. I guess they want it to stay around forever.

I am kind of surprised that such a Republican legislature would allow the Turnpike to operate with this much debt.

Well the Sports Commission is paid for by your tax dollars to help city business. This is welfare for business that won't go away. I don't hear anyone that's against it.

But I don't have a job that's directly affected by the sports commission. I haven't used a hotel or attended an NBC game or Wingnuts game, etc.(which is subsidized by the city governement) for years. The arena doesn't directly help me either. We should have never been taxed for that. Furthermore, I can get where I need to without the turnpike. Let's lower taxes more and let it crumble too. I don't have any kids being educated by the public schools, Let's get rid of those taxes too. Kids can be educated by private education. I've never had a house on fire. The only time that I've directly been affected by police is when they have stopped me for a traffic violation. We could certainly lower taxes a lot if we truly wanted to.

I've always wanted good government that makes good decisions and I think that for the most part, our government have made a lot of cuts/good decisions this year. But we could certainly do without a lot of things on my list and more.

                    • Perhaps some sort of mish-mash of funding solutions:

40%: Donations from the Kochs, Garvery, Clark, Murfin, Vess, Steven, Geist, Galichia, Parcells, Fulmer, famous alumni.
                      25%: Sunsetted sales tax
25%: Licensing, stadium naming, advanced ticket sales, "luxury suite" sales, student prefence group (like KSU did with ICAT, preferential student seating)
                      10%: Tuition increases
The Purple Wrath shall cometh.....and that right soon.

Just a point of clarification...the Sports Commission is a private non-profit. Most of their budget is from membership dues of local companies and individuals. The County is just one of many members at $5,000 per year. I think the City is a member at the same level. Just didn't want people to think that they were funded almost entirely by tax dollars.

                        • Tulsa just beat Notre Dame in South Bend on national Tv.
It made me think about some of those great WSU-Tulsa football games in the past.

It would have been great if it could have been us today. :)

                          • My, how the mighty have fallen!

It does make you wonder if NBC is starting to question their exclusive contract with Notre Dame.

Even at that, there still is a certain amount of aura simply because of the history behind the name.

And, no, I am not a fan of Notre Dame. I am just making some observations. I am very pleased for Tulsa's win and wish that it could be Wichita State, as well.

                            • Big win for Tulsa. No.... make that a HUGE win for Tulsa ~ perhaps the biggest win in their history.

Notre Dame has some very high admission standards for athletes. Not as high as the Ivy, but certainly much much higher than the Big X. Still, I think it might be advantageous for them to join the Big X in all sports.
Their storied history is getting just a bit dusty and the pages are starting to yellow just a tad.

This game does show you that you don't have to compete in the BCS to have a program and games that bring a lot of enjoyment to the school, fans, and city.

                              Congrats Tulsa.
