For a minute I thought it was the University of Pacific in Stockton. That would be a huge surprise.

The University of Akron opened a new on-campus football facility this fall. They hosted Indiana last week. They seemd to have heavy local business support as well as an AD who had a vision and went after it.

When WSU adds football again, I hope a new cozy stadium will be in the works. How awesome would it be to open a new stadium that holds around 25-30k (with future expansion expected), and open against Tulsa.

A new stadium without a track, lower stands, a bowl at one end and an elevated open air concession stands, tables, club suites, and offices at the other end that sits on top of a large iron arch from which the Shocker marching band would make their way onto the field after playing their way across campus into the sold out stadium
Dream it, Design it, Do it.

            Thanks for the link Veritas.

I completely agree with you that WSU should look to build a new stadium when football gets going. We should start an athletic complex west of campus with a new stadium.

              West of campus? Where?

The golf course would be the logical choice. Much better than kicking people out of their homes.

Actually there are quite a few homes and people that need to be relocated south of the campus.

Didn't WSU purchase a lot of land SW of Hillside and 21st?

Notice the first paragraph in link #1 when the Akron President talks about the next phase. This is a bit of a sore spot with me. I don't live in Wichita anymore, but am curious whether our President and AD speak about a vision of where WSU is headed. We must have a vision and goals. Otherwise we flounder near the rocks and never head out on an exciting and new journey.
                  Gene was/is a visionary.

South of campus would be a good location in that Fairmount park could be acquired from the city and surrounding properties should be moderatly priced.

The only things I'm aware of at that intersection are a BOA branch, a police substation, and a bunch of houses.

I'm open to South or West for a complex for athletics. To me we are just cramming our facilities on campus with no vision of the future. I again agree with Veritas on his point that there doesn't seem to be clear goals for the future . This could be just a perception on my part, but it seems that others feel that same way. Maybe the administration should address this with the alumni and community. Great visions generates excitement and donations. Saluki Way comes to mind.

I think they should level the area where the Hughes Metroplex is and use that if they are going to do something. Having said that, I don't think right now is the time to financially try to re-establish a football program. It simply does not make sense financially. Not to mention the strain that 85 new scholarships will have on the athletic department. Now just simply isn't the time, unless someone comes forward with $30 Million.

Can't do that. That is where the future school of dentistry will go. (We can hope) And aren't they putting a small building there to offer some classes in that area of study?

ShockCity, it might not be wise to INVEST at the current time, but it is certainly the time to plan it. When the economy turns back around, we need to strike.
If WSU wants to be big time or at least competitive with the Louisvilles of the college sports scene, we need football clear and simple. We have the industry, and we have some great wealth in this city. We shouldn't apologize for pulling industry and people together to bring back football, build a new stadium, and instill some additional pride in WSU and the City of Wichita.
