Between the two counties, comes nearly 50% of all state tax revenue.
So now that everyone knows who is doing their part to support the state universities, no one should have a problem with Sedgwick County adding a 1/2 percent sales tax!
Now with that out of the way, let's bring on some real debate of why pogo's idea of a 1/2 percent sales tax is the way to go!
Let me start the debate.
Wichita (Sedgwick County), Wichita State need this. This money is how we can allow WSU to make a huge impact on this community!

1) Do nothing, and keep status quo.
2) Hope for a major donor to come forward with a large some of money (seeing no one has done this in however many years it has been).
3) Some form of a proposal that Pogo and I have mentioned.
I don't claim to have all the answers, in fact I admittedly don't know all the ins and outs of what is needed at WSU. I do know we don't have a football team. There are many other needs besides football.
The idea here is to start some debate, that hopefully will turn into a plan.
As to your question about Washburn, I have no idea.

The whole idea behind the initial suggestion was to SUPPLEMENT the funding we now receive from the state. Not to become a municipal funded institution. Why wait for thousands to give some money or a few to give large amounts. We already have tens of thousands of transactions happening (sales of items, rooms, entertainment, etc) on a yearly basis from people living in Wichita and Sedgwick county not to mention from people that don't live here or even live in Kansas. How many notice a quarter of a penny additional sales tax? If you buy a house for 200,000 it would cost you an additional $500. There will always be people that will vote against any increase but to raise the awareness of WSU on a national level would reap benefits for the city and surrounding area. Wouldn't it be nice to not worry about losing a coach or even ass't coaches because we can't match the payroll. Yes, I read about the need for a coach to be able to compete at a National Level but you can do that by competing against National calibre teams. You can schedule fewer home games against the UMKC's because you don't need to for the sake of the home game revenue. Use a couple of those games to schedule teams from either coast ie Arizona, UCLA, Florida because you have the cash and don't have to worry about losing that revenue. Just the idea of WSU having its state aid supplemented by the city should cause all hawk and cat fans to start quivering in their barka loungers. That alone is worth the sales tax increase to me.

Page down to: Tuition Fees at Area Schools. I think this is a solid option, to charge more per credit hour or add to school fees.
I didn't realize just how much of a bargain it is to attend WSU, compared to these schools. Wow! :posterwsu:

Johnson population: 517,000
SG popluation: 470,000
Kansas population: 2.757 million
That makes Johnson + SG 36% of Kansas' population.
Washburn is the last municipal university in the country. They do receive substantial assistance from the State, however.
Kansas has too many public universities and community colleges, but I don't expect any to close anytime soon.

Option #4 is at best a stop gap to help fund football and the associated costs of Title IX. It talks of generating 3 million a year at the expense of students that are usually here because it is cheaper. A one quarter cent sales tax would generate 25 times that amount on a yearly basis. 3 million a year would put football about ten years down the road since it is estimated to need about 30 million to help endow the football program and the other associated programs to be funded. In ten years what will the estimated costs be? What about expanded facilities that would need to be built. Surely a new weight facility, locker rooms, practice facilities, and equipment will be needed. Why not dream bigger than just providing for the minimum to get this thing started which will inevitably fail due to lack of funding and foresight. Why have to keep spending money from other sports to properly fund it because very few division 1 football programs actually make money and this thing is going to need support for the forseeable future.

Pogo, don't think that I like option 4 better. I agree 100% with you on the 1/4 (or 1/2%) sales tax increase.
My intent was to show that other options just won't get it done. Also, that maybe someone else, may have ideas that I have not considered. These and any additional ideas in my opinion will keep falling short to the sales tax idea.
I think it's the only way we can win people over to vote it in. Which is the toughest part of the battle.
