  • 2015-16 Shocker Indoor Track & Field

The Shocker Multi-Eventers start off the indoor season today and tomorrow (Dec. 1st and 2nd) with what amounts to an intrasquad competition. Something to do if you have your afternoon's free.

WICHITA, Kan. --  Wichita State's track and field multi-athletes open the season Thursday and Friday at the Wichita State Shocker Multi event at the Heskett Center.

At last year's MVC Indoor Championship's the Shocker men took 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th as the Shocks under Coach Rainbolt focus on developing depth in the multi-events to a much greater extent than most college teams do and certainly more than other Valley teams do which usually allows them to jump to a solid early lead in the Valley Championships.

As I said this is essentially an intrasquad competition with 7 of the 15 athletes current Shockers with 4 additional Shocker alums included All-American Austin Bahner. competing in the Men's Heptathlon. There are 2 athletes from Friends, 1 from Oklahoma Baptist and 1 unaffiliated to round out the field of 15.

Current Shockers competing include reigning Valley outdoor Decathon champ Sr Hunter Veith, Jr Ben Johnson, Sr John Nicholas, So Kaden Griffin, Fr. Lucas Shaffer (Conway Springs), Fr. Davis Bahner (Wichita Heights), Austin's little bro, and Edwin Sobalvarro. The last 3 are all participating as unattached which preserves their ability to redshirt.

Sobalvarro is listed as Unattached-Wichita State but he is not listed on the Shocker roster. From what I can find it looks like Sobalvarro competed for Friends last year. He is no longer listed on the Friends' rosters. It would appear he has walked on at Wichita State. Perhaps this is his trial to see if he can earn a roster spot.

The goShockers announcement refers to the 8-event Men's Heptathlon. It is, of course, 7 events. 4 on Thursday and 3 on Friday.

Huntet Veith had a strong day 1 at the Shocker Multi as he leads former Shocker All-American Austin Bahner 3,282 to 2,995.

Title should reflect 2016-17. However, I don't seem to be able to edit that. Perhaps one of the site administrators can do that.

@_kai_ I tried to send you a PM about this but your mail box is full. Is this something you can correct?

Hunter Veith put up new PR's in the 60m dash and in the shot put and was just shy of his PR's in the long jump and high jump in amassing his 3,282 points in day 1.

If Hunter can equal his career bests in the 3 remaining events (60H, pole vault and 1,000) he would score 5,705 points breaking Krzysztof Slupkowski's school record of 5,668 points. And that would be in the 1st meet of the year.

Hunter's previous best heptathlon score was 5,260 which is 9th best in school history.

Hunter Veith did not get the school record. He no heighted on the pole vault and finished in 5th which you typically will do when you get a zero score in any event.

Austin Bahner won the event with 5,283 points. Jr Ben Johnson finished second with 5,001 points.

                WSU-KU-KSU TRIANGULAR - THURSDAY, JANUARY 12TH

This might be fun if you have the time and interest.

                From the Eagle:

State champions — Wichita State track and field schedules one of its most significant meets early in the season.

It’s significant because WSU coaches place great emphasis on the team aspect of the sport and because of the competition. On Thursday at the Heskett Center, Kansas and Kansas State join the Shockers in a triangular meet that’s in its third season.

The schools compete for a traveling trophy and the host school — K-State in 2015, Kansas in 2016 — won the first two.

“The team thing is the big thing for this meet, more than any other meet outside of the MVC meet,” WSU assistant director of track and field John Wise said. “We’re obviously pulling out all the stops to win it.”

That means top athletes such as sprinter/hurdler Nikki Larch-Miller will compete in as many as three or four events. Track is a sport in which athletes sometimes gradually work their way into top shape, and avoid peaking before national meets. The timing of this meet doesn’t allow for a casual approach that can confuse fans and obscure the meaning of performances.

Field events begin at noon. Running events begin at 5 p.m. and are scheduled to end at 7:32 with the 1,600-meter relay.

“It’s the most fan-friendly meet you can go to,” Wise said. “We’ll get the running events in in about two hours.”

KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Results: KU 242 - KSU - 231 - WSU 217. The meet was scored based on the top 2 finishers from each school in each event.

Shocker Jr. Hunter Veith won the long jump with a leap of 25-0.

Shocker So. Zack Penrod competed well in two very competitive middle distance races winning the 800m run by 0.1 of a second at 1.53.80 and finishing 2nd by 0.78 seconds in the mile at 4:13.49

The Shockers will next compete in Lincoln on January 20-21 at the NWU Prairie Wolf Invitational and the Mark Colligan Memorial both held at teh Bov Devaney Sports Center.

                  I
noticed that Jared Belardo was MIA for this meet. Hopefully, he is okay or at least not seriously injured if he is injured.

Good article on Mike Wells, an intriguing transfer from Oklahoma out of St. Louis, in the sprints.

Mike was 3rd in the 60m dash at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular with a time of 6.89 (0.07 seconds behind the winner). Sounds like this young man has very good potential.
